1931 Midget Kit - "Winnie Mae" - Start to Finish

Whenever I finish a scale project, I like to balance it with something nostalgic, perhaps a model that my dad might have built as a youngster in the 1930s. That's where this midget kit of the 12" Lockheed Vega "Winnie Mae" comes in. It's semi-scale for sure, but it's what the kids back then wanted to build...the latest big news flyer of the day. The kit was part of the first year offering in 1931 by the National Model Aircraft & Supply Company from New Rochelle, NY. At $1.10, these kits were more expensive than most by far, but they came with extras, including printed tissue. You could even buy them already made, though the asking price, delivered, was 4X the kit price.
But this film and model is more about my dad, who was born in 1921, the youngest of eight siblings, and grew up through his teens, spending much of his time with his latest balsa job, at a building board in his bedroom.
In 2008, while visiting the folks, my dad pulled me aside and showed me two boxes that were given to him by his friend's widow. Gordy Robinson had died earlier in the year. He was dad's best friend since they were 8-9 years old....and together they had built model airplanes during the years leading up to the war. He was also dad's best man. Since then, hardly a week went by that they hadn't seen each other.
The largest box contained five old models, while the other had a stack of vintage plans inside, pinholes included. Before me were a few of the models that the two of them had built throughout the 1930s. Incredible. Together they had probably built over 200 of them. Ragged building at its best...you can almost feel the young kid's tongue out of the corner of his mouth as he attached the tissue, glued a joint etc etc. Precious. My dad was so thrilled to be given these models by Gordy's wife. But for me...what a gift...this unexpected view into my dad's modeling history.
Having grown up in Pennsylvania, most of their models and plans were by Megow. But there were a few others that I'd never heard of before. Small 5" span solid models that included metal props and an actual pilot, stamped out of brass. There was a slick 5" wooden prop that looked like it'd be used for scale...but then there's a prop shaft & hook attached, so who knows? Maybe it was used for flying after all. I just kept shaking my head. Felt like I was sharing a day with my dad who was no longer the man with 87 years behind him, but instead a young, energetic lad with visions of newly discovered free-flight.
After we had finished taking a few photos, dad gently held one of the biplanes and tossed her for a short glide...and yes...and of course...she did in fact fly....
Dad passed in 2014 at 93 years. But when I start one of these nostalgic builds, I know for certain that he's right along side. xo.

Tom, Your videos are very inspiring and have opened my eyes to the world of free flight. I have been flying RC most of my life, about 45 years. I am currently building my first free flight model and really enjoying it! I did build a few when I was a kid but didn’t really know what I was doing. I always thought free flight was a step backwards in the hobby, I am seeing now that is not the case. It is a whole new challenge and very exciting! Thank You!

Thx for the kind words, Doug. Flight is flight, so I'm glad to hear that ur recognizing the beauty, simplicity and calm that free-flight can bring. There's a pace with building a rubber ship that is grounding, and seems to counter the hectic way of the world.

I'm also an RC guy, although younger, as I started flying in the 90's. As soon as I was old enough, I got away from free flight and rubber power and got a big nitro RC plane (and another, and another, heh!) I never looked back until about five years ago, and got hooked all over again. It's relaxing and has more to it that meets the eye. The simplicity and serenity of building and flying them is just wonderful. I'd love to try those super-light planes covered in clear plastic with the huge, slow propellers (science olympiad or something(?), but lately I've been into getting vintage plans and building gliders from those. There's some great free-flight and RC plans from very old and excellent fliers are being reprinted by enthusiasts (Check out the second paragraph in the comment I left above). Anyways...Happy Modelling!

Yikes…. I learned how to build from a fellow pilot about twice my age. His models were exquisite and they set a standard for my building. We flew in the evening twilight to avoid thermals. Despite his age he could throw hand launched gliders higher than me. One of my faves was the G. Y. 20 Minicab. I built two. 45 seconds from r.o.g. Starting in the hangar heading out. (The only paved surface) a hand launch bought another 5 seconds at most. He put just as much work into his full sized sailplane, painting it every couple of years. I too flew full sized sailplanes. Thermal hunting and centering is so much easier from inside the plane!!! I switched to R.C. and last I heard, Thursday evenings are devoted to R.C. Flying from the perpendicular runway just as I used to. Im eighty-five now and I used my building skills to make a pretty good violin. I still have it but I love my carbon fiber five string most. I may be old but I’m up to date with CF musical instruments and foam airplanes.

Beyond the tried an tested methods of stick and tissue construction there's the nuance that makes the difference between an exquisite model (from even a simple plan) and a rough one, the nuance is things like the jig you made and the way you carefully cut through the strip stock and then sand it to size... you do make it look a hell of a lot easier than it is but you also illustrate how important the nuance is in these mini works of aeronautical art. Congrats on another beauty.

Yet, another excellent video, Tom and a great tribute to your father! I'll bet he didn't increase the stabilizer 150% though. I always thought models with increased stabilizer areas looked goofy. Now, after having built so many models, I think the real planes look goofy with such small stabs. 😅 Thanks a million!
@maxfliart
@maxfliart Год назад
Thx, Larry. I agree...he would have followed the plan, then probably have been frustrated by the flight performance. I always shoot for 25% of the wing area for the stab, and 12-15% for the rudder. It's amazing how many plans from back in the '30s didn't try the same. I guess they were more interested in the scale look.

Fliart, as a new conception of aviation/aerodynamics/. .. etc. and art combined, just amazes me at NEW realizations in both great, (seemingly mutually-exclusive) endeavors come together, a hybrid experience, in this novel new combination of freeflight that so practices and celebrates both, seamlessly combined in Fliart here by choosing to build and fly a replica of the great airplane - Winnie Mae. To American aviation history enthusiasts, this particular aircraft is a special joy to build and fly all along the way. WHY? Because Winnie Mae is an actual, tangible touchstone to our beloved lost hero champion Wiley Post AND too, Will Rogers and even Amelia Earhart; their suddenly-come-and-gone-completely times and all things them; i.e., great trail breaking pioneers in aviation AND aviation barriers being smashed at will, that had existed for humanity's entire history just disappearing AND NEW American values, means and ways emerging for the first time that are/were peerless. Yet accidently these pioneers lost, (sudden, unexpected, similar to football's "blindside tackle" while in full stride) way too soon; leaving us STILL, with echoes of deep shock, pain and grief at their untimely loss, after all, . . . But Winnie and Wiley, Will and Amelia fly again here for us, for such a brief flighttime, tenuous all the way, but steadfast nonetheless, who DEEPLY loved (and appreciated) them all so much for what they did, (for us too!) and the magnificent, selfless reasons they did what they did. Cheers and Happy Landings! to Fliart for resurrecting our heroes' glorious, great and good memories; another triumph for them and us all!

My local hobby shop had kits this size called "peanut scale". Yours came out great! I like how you made your own prop. Never seen reed in a plane kit before. From childhood till now at 35, I've built planes like these for fun. It's a way to get away from technology for a while, and is wonderfully relaxing. A Gem to Share: While looking for an old plane I had as a kid, I found that fans of old, out-of-production planes are selling nicely scanned and copied plans. Some of my first kits-and the best fliers-were smaller ones from Jetco's "Thermic" series. eBay seller "BrookwoodFlyer" has an enormous collection of plans, and there are quite a few guys with websites dedicated to it as well (like John Woodfield). Hi Tom! Why how come I'm not surprised by the "brum! Brum!"? The pics of Mr Hallman Snr. are sweet - indicative of what's to come! This little bird is an absolute corker. I love the engine details and the tissue scheme: also you'll get lots of bang for your buck auw wise with that spar.. Lots of structural integrity for a tiny bit of balsa. Until I started looking at aeromodeling on U tube I thought that people who said "wheel pants" were in the minority.. Little did I know that it's only we Brits 🇬🇧who are so er, repressed as to have to call them "spats".. It's unlikely you'd hear a 1940s RAF officer using the word "pants" in the jolly old mess, don't you know? I mean, it simply wouldn't be cricket.. Lovely build and most promising in early trim stage. Thx. In the US, u can buy it at either 70%, 91% or 99. Simple as that. I found the 70% to work best...but I'm sure if u add water to the other two it'd have the same effect.

The manufacturer went out of business a long time ago. You might find a kit on eBay. Your best option would be to download the plan and tissue files in the description.

The company folded in '37 or so, but the plans come around from time to time. My Heath Parasol & Curtiss Condor films are from the National kits.
