jockellis, he made the team, and he did very well. He rowed in no.2 seat on the freshman 8+ boat. They finished first in their first five regattas. 2nd at Stoatsbury in Philly. Only disappointment was at nationals, one kid was ill and they didn't qualify for finals. His team (Montclair, NJ H.S.) is a public H.S. team and is very strong, matches up well with the deep-pocketed private schools
I just finished the book. I started bawling when it mentioned that Joe and Roger would call each other and just sit in silence for each other's company after everyone else has died.
I'm almost done with the book. Can you imagine the bond these boys have made with each other? And their coach. Great book !!! Looking forward to the movie in Dec.
Just read the book, which had me in tears towards the end in its utterly engaging description of the race. One of the best sporting books I've ever read, if not the best.
Just finished the book. Al Ulbrickson the American coach, had argued vehemently a good week before the heats began, that the six lane format was almost a death knell for the teams that would draw lanes five and six, due to more exposure to the natural wind direction. As such, four lanes should only be used. He was unsuccessful in his lament, and not surprisingly, when the medal race lanes were announced, the US received lane six, while the host nation Germany secured the coveted one spot. Despite this handicap and a missed start, the US boat, with their stroke oar (Don Hume) in a semi-comatose state due to illness, managed to edge out Axis powers Italy and Germany, and win the gold medal.
This was a propaganda movie. Riefenstahl was in charge of propaganda movie production for Hitler and excelled at her job. Read "The Boys in the Boat" for a full story regarding the UW story of winning the gold. The portrayal of the gold medal race is fabulous.
@@diebereitschaft8963You won’t find any, probably, because by the the Nazi party controlled all press in Germany and the German government went out of its way to show the world the side of Germany it wanted to be seen. We can verify it being propaganda based on the fact that both Goebbels and Hitler himself were heavily involved in the planning of the film.
Olympia is a work of art. It has never been surpassed as a documentary of a sporting event. My film professor showed it back in art school. If it's propaganda, then any film of any sports event is propaganda.
Listen to Bobby Moch's voice, " Push! Pull! Push! Pull!" In the book I read he had such baritone strength for a small kid. And he does! Glad Reifenstahl could film part of it the next day to mimic the Olympics. In reality, the crowd was so loud that the boys could not hear him.... Moch thought quickly and started beating the boat so they could feel the vibrations.
Pocock reinforced the coxswain’s seat. Something that most shell builders didn’t do. In any other boat, Mock would have put a hole in the side hitting on it
I found that totally amazing when I read the book. Seems like he was an incredibly quick thinker. He’s one of my favorite characters. I can’t imagine how he must have felt reading his father’s letter right before leaving. Finding out his father hid from everyone that they were Jewish so they could have a better life (in America!) must have been gut wrenching. Wish there were more interviews of these guys.
I just finished the book and had to search for Riefenstahl's films. The Washington boys were in lane 6, and not shown much. That stands to reason considering why the filming was done. Amazing book, if you haven't read it yet!
I am almost ashamed, as someone who rowed in the late '60s and early '70s that I didn't know this story until the American Experience Documentary last year. We all grew up with the amazing story of the accomplishments of Jesse Owens from that Olympics. While the doc is great, Mr. Brown's book was so well written that you can actually visualize the history with every paragraph.
You may have not known about the story until much later than your rowing experiences because all Joe Rantz's rowing medals, etc., was buried in their attic and wasn't discovered until Joe Rantz health was failing him and his daughter Judy Willman which is my cousin found them and started asking her father about his experience regarding the 1936 Olympics. Joe Rantz was a modest man and he'd never mentioned the experience to his children. My cousin Joyce Simdars was married to Joe Rantz. Daniel James Brown's property is next door to my cousin Judy Willman's that is how they met and she told Daniel Brown that her father had a story that he may be interest in after she had found his medals in the attic.
Also, the media did not cover this story nearly as much as Jesse Owens. It got somewhat buried. In addition, the local papers went on strike at that same time and so did not publish anything about it.
I completed Boys In the Boat. Most profound book I have ever read. I am an indoor rower on the Concept 2. Britain and USA were heavily handicapped not only by the lane assignments but Don Hume the stroke was suffering from pneumonia and during the race may have passed out from anoxia. Also note the signal to start deliberately favored the Germans and Italians who were assigned lanes 1 and 2...the lanes least hindered by side winds.
Indoor 'rowing' and being on the water are very different things....Conditions never change inside...It's good training for outdoor rowing, but that's all it will ever be...
Just finished The Boys in the Boat this morning. Like so many others I came here to see the footage. Absolutely amazing story about some amazing men of character! Wow!!
Recommend downloading Riefenstahl’s 2 part coverage of these games (the rowing is late in part 2) in HD - the original films were magnificently done and crystal clear. It’s in some ways better than watching the Olympics today - just the action!
I played it a couple times thinking it was an optical illusion. They were outside themselves, reaching for something extra... My coach used to tell us to give it 110% and I thought it was BS. But those guys WERE giving it 110%.
Yes, they should have been on the near side as best qualifier, but it was changed and they got the least favourable draw. I just listened to the audio book and the description of this race was amazing.
@@Ecle888015 Just finished the audio book with family on road trip to 5 national parks in Utah. Edward Hermann has a great voice as narrator and kept us riveted as the story unfolded. Those boys had amazing stories and all were successful in life following their days on the "Husky Clipper."
Riefenstahl was a Nazi propagandist. She also produced and directed the 1935 Nazi propaganda film of Hitler at Nuremberg called Triumph of the Will which portrayed Hitler as the new leader of Germany who would return Germany as a world power. She had a lot to do with helping Hitler take the world to war and the Nazis murdering millions of people. I doubt seriously that Riefenstahl's soul is "resting" in peace.
I believe it was the Americans, you should read a book called The Boys In The Boat by Daniel James Brown, this book talked all about there way to the olympics, I highly recommend it.
It switches as 2:51 to Bobby Moch (the U.S. coxswain). Not sure which stroke it’s focused on at 2:50, but it’s not Don Hume of the USA. He is shown immediately after Moch.
Manuel J. Torres-Anjel We notice that, at that time, most countries saluted "the ancient Greek way" (with the right hand straight). Greece, France, Germany, and many other countries.
It seems to be correct that Jewish people is Germany did declare war in 1933. It is rarely mentioned in history books or in history classes. Social engineering by media and government is and has been a dominant factor in the past and present.
Your grammar is unclear so I’m not understanding what you’re trying to say. Did Germany declare war on the Jews or are you saying the Jews declared war on Germany? I’ve never seen evidence of the Jewish people persecuting the German government, but I have seen the laws that the Nazi state passed that Jews were not considered German citizens.
