The extraordinary 1938 Alfa Romeo Tipo 308 (8C-308) is one of four examples built. We are in the Pre-War era, and the Italian brand showed the world an extraordinary engineering capacity using a 3-litre in-line 8-cylinder engine equipped with two Roots superchargers. The power generated is 295Hp at 6,000 rpm coupled to a 4-speed gearbox to move the car weighing only 870Kg. The 308C type didn't have a brilliant career in racing, although between 1938 and 1939, it won two Hillclimb races in La Turbie with Jean-Pierre Wimille, who then won a couple more races in Europe in the 1940s after the war. One of the four specimens in Argentina achieved success and placings thanks to the driver Oscar Alfredo Gálvez. That specimen is kept in the museum founded by Juan Manuel Fangio. Whatever the case may be, the 308C laid the foundations for the future and victorious 158 "Alfetta". Specifically, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022, I saw one of these beautiful specimens impeccably driven by owner Julian Majzub. It was indeed a huge pleasure to see him in action.
I have to thank my friends and RU-vidrs ‪@19Bozzy92‬, ‪@MattyB727‬ & ‪@NM2255‬ whom I collaborated to realise this video. Enjoy! 😉
Buona visione! 😉

The driver looks to be Julian Mazjub, an Iranian whose family moved to the UK several decades ago. The tear-it-up, smoking-tyres, tail-whipping style is his trademark. He's about 70 and best-known for his bravado in his own Bugatti Type 35B. As a septuagenarian myself, he's a hero of mine.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this!!! Majzub's 308C is the only one in private hands, and the remaining one still actively raced. These cars used the chassis frames of the older Tipo C 8C-35 GP cars, which you have covered a few years ago (in which I also made a comment in!) This is what I knew of them so far... As you said, they only made 4 308Cs. One burned out at Pau in 1938, when a defective fuel tank mount sprang a leak which was then ignited by the hot exhaust, prompting Tazio Nuvolari to jump off the car at speed. That episode ultimately caused him to leave Alfa Romeo. The remaining 3 cars got raced in 1938-39, without much success, as the car was basically a stop-gap model, Alfa Romeo pining its hopes on the 12-cylinder 312, and even the 16-cylinder 316 instead. Then there's also the 158 "Alfetta", which most likely further reduced the focus on the 308C. Ultimately, the remaining 3 cars got sold. One ended up in he United States, where it was raced at Indy and even on Pikes Peak. That car remains in the USA, as part of the Indianapolis museum collection. The second car, ended up racing in Argentina, ultimately bough by Juan Manuel Fangio, and is currently displayed at Fangio's museum in Balcarce. The third car, ended up in Brazil, and many years later, that car was then found, sold to the UK then Julian Majzub bought it and restored it back into original...

By the way, Julian Majzub _really sent it!_ At the Sunday shootout, he posted a 59.68 second run!!! A sub-60-second run, on a pre-war car!!! And I loved that bit at 5:07, the P3 and the 308C side-by-side.

I want to thank you for reporting the history of these cars that I knew in part but not wholly. Your comments are always a great source of cultural enrichment for me, and I appreciate the time you take to write. I was sure you would like this video. I have spent a lot of time filming the beautiful pre-war cars because Goodwood is one of those very few occasions where I can see them. In the following weeks/months, I will be releasing more videos.

@@Italiansupercarvideo He actually crashed that car at Molecomb corner (the corner where you filmed it at 2:05 and 4:17) several years ago, when the car jumped out of gear while he's braking. Goodwood, a year or so back, streamed some old footage from Goodwood Revival. One of which is the 2010 Goodwood Trophy for pre-1952 GP and Formula Libre cars. Julian Majzub, who started in 8th place, in the rain, started passing cars until he passed ERA R4D to lead the race. But, as a dry line started to appear little by little, the ERA drive, Mac Hulbert, tried a brave move to re-pass Majzub, regaining the lead. Majzub kept fighting on, and also started fending off Audi driver Frank Stippler (driving a Maserati 8CM very sideways) until the finish. Majzub finishing a close second, Stippler right behind him in third... At the post race interview, Majzub said that the 308C keeps jumping out of gear, so in the race, he just kept it in 4th gear! Frank Stippler, meanwhile, said that his team put new tires for the 8CM for the race, which turned out to be a bad idea when it rained, meaning that his car had very little traction in the wet, causing him to get really sideways and even suffer a lot of wheelspin in a straight line!

Beautiful video, the Alfa Romeo 308 is one of the most beautiful GP cars. I would like to clarify something... all the Alfa 308s were similar in every aspect except for the one owned by Oscar Alfredo Gálvez (which is the one preserved in the Juan Manuel Fangio Museum) since this one was not 3.0 liters but rather left the factory originally as 3.8 liters, meaning it is the only one of its kind in the world. Here I leave the link to a video that I uploaded of a GP in Argentina in 1947 in which you can see three Alfa Romeo 308s, by Oscar Alfredo Gálvez of 3.8 liters, and those of Chico Landi and Achille Varzi of 3.0 liters. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VEHnHtzauPA.html The Retiro street circuit had an extension of 2.41 km, completing fifty laps, totaling 120.5 km. The fastest lap was held by Achille Varzi in 1m 06s at a speed of 131.45 km/h In this original 8mm footage, you can distinguish the following cars/drivers: - nº28 - Alfa Romeo 308 - Achille Varzi (Écurie Naphta Course - Formula Libre). - nº20 - Alfa Romeo 308 "50017" - Oscar Alfredo Gálvez (Escudería YPF/Cerveza Quilmes - Formula Libre). - nº16 - Maserati 4CL "1583" - Luigi "Gigi" Villoresi (Scuderia Ambrosiana - Formula Libre). - nº6 - Maserati 6CM - Giacomo Palmieri (Scuderia Enrico Platé - Formula Libre). - nº24 - Alfa Romeo 308 - Chico Landi (Escudería Francisco Landi - Formula Libre). - nº2 - Alfa Romeo 2900A - Italo Bizio (Escudería Italo Bizio - Formula Libre). - nº26 - Maserati 8CL "3034" - Pascual Puópolo (Escudería San Isidro - Formula Libre). - nº49 - Graham - Eusebio Marcilla (pseudonym "Emart" - Mecánica Argentina Fuerza Libre). - nº22 - Maserati 6CM - Raph (Écurie Naphta Course - Formula Libre). Final classification: 1st Luiggi Villoresi (Italy) - 1h 04m 11s 2nd Achille Varzi (Italy) - 1h 04m 12s 3rd Boy Landi (Brazil) - 1h 04m 38s 4th Giacomo Palmieri (Italy) - 1h 04m 43s 5th Pablo Pessatti (Argentina) - 1h 04m 53s 6th Italo Bizio (Argentina) I thank Juan Carlos Pérez Loizeau for having made his film and photographic archive of world and Argentine motorsports available to me.
