Afternoon. 48082 Michigan here. I served on a Perry, USS Flatley FFG-21. The 76mm gun was tied into the radar and used effectively as an anti air weapon. Thanks for the entertaining videos.

In the 70s the us group could have included the Missouri actually even up to the 90s…. I wouldn’t mind seeing it and some modern destroyers vs some of the fleets where you are struggling with the Yamato…

I think there's a "The Final Countdown" (1980) movie nod here. There are some great interviews with the Tomcat pilots who were involved with the production in 1979 going around now (Mover, Ward Carroll etc.)

You say you can't reach new people, I'm a relative noob. I thought watching people playing a flight sim would be a bit naff, but I got hooked. Oddly compelling, now I'm excited for new ones, keep hope alive and keep it up.

8:15 According to a self proclaimed flight officer on Quora, yes Cap, multiple launches can take place at the same time. It would be done basically JUST like shown by the AI. He says "doublehooking" (shooting the cat's right next to each other) became frowned upon, and even when it did happen, it was one right after the other, and not at the same time.

Absolutely brilliant!! This makes me think of the old famous military philosophy that all plans are only good until first contact. After that it's initiative and critical thinking, and guts under pressure. This was a perfect example of improvise, adapt, and overcome. Everything was going wrong from first contact, and you all rolled with the punches and found a way to get the initiative back!! Damn fine flying as always Grim Reapers!!

So you did it... again. You revisited the "Final Countdown" scenario again, but made it as much like the great "What if...?" scene of the movie as realistically possible. Bravo.😊

I laughed waaaaayyyy to hard at Simba's first tomcat lagged out in the ocean with it's wings swept back.

Was in the U.S. Navy for six years and was aboard both the George Washington and George H. W. Bush. Carriers do launch 2 aircraft simultaneously if necessary. They break immediately off to the either side to minimize any chance of collision. I will say they prefer to stagger the launches though.

I think we should do this scenario again, but with a 1970’s Missouri taking the place of the carrier. Would be interesting to see how the “battle group” held out. Or just adding the 70’s Missouri to the 70’s carrier group(after all, historically, it could have easily been placed in the group).

The 'modern' carrier is actually much closer in time to the 1940s than today. This doesn't make me feel old at alllll

Entertaining video! On your comment about "not reaching new people", let's hope that Heatblurs F-14 Tomcat for MSFS will bring new blood to DCS. I can imagine after flying that in MSFS, I'd want to use it in combat... and a Google search will stumble upon the Grim Reapers videos pretty quickly.

I wonder how much of a difference it would make if the technology differences weren't so great. Say a 1941 IJN carrier versus a 1951 US carrier of the Korean War. Does ten years of technological innovation result in greatly disparate results?

Usually they will fire 2 Catapults but only as long as it is C 1&3 or 2&4 or 1&4. They won't use 2 Catapults directly next to each other. I would assume Simba would know the Best...

Cap yes the Nimitz class can simultaneously launch cat 1&3 then 2&4 but there is an interlock between 1&2, 3&4 so they can’t launch simultaneously. Most operations have delay between 1&3, 2&4

I think the best way to get new viewers is to copy things that are happening in the news currently. That’s how you got me. I didn’t even know what DCS was.

As a sailor on the USS Theodore Roosevelt for 4 years I have never seen simultaneous catapult launches in peace time. They would launch, say, cat 1 then wait until the jet was clear and fully airborne then launch from 3, then repeat and launch 2 then 4. Something like that. However, it's more than capable of launching all four at the same time. Each catapult has it's own steam generator, charge tanks and machinery for redundancy. If cat 2 gets battle damage or just breaks, the other three can continue on like normal. But in war time, especially if an inbound raid was immanent, then the safety rules get bent or broken. We would do whatever we had to do to clear decks. Like if a jet got damaged and was clogging up the works, we would just shove it over board and get on with it. Same with ordinance. If there was a live bomb or missile, there's a chute next to the bomb farm between the island and the deck edge just for that purpose. If in doubt, get rid of it. A $30,000 Mk 84 is not worth much compared to what it could take out. Sorry, I will stop rambling. Once I get started on naval tactics, I am hard to shut up...

Did the Perry's bug out, or did they stop launching SAMs when friendlies merged with the zeros? They only fired 21 SM-2s when each one would have carried at least that many.

The question at 8:15 about launching multiple jets simultaneously? No. They wait a few seconds. But they can launch 4 within 10 seconds if everything goes smoothly

I'm going to keep asking for it but a Royal Navy vs Royal Navy carrier group would be a great video. Either a 80s vs 2000s or 2000s vs 2020s.

I can not understand why we are having so many issues with gun combat between jets and props when the ME-262 pilots used the dive and climb attacks against allied pilots with good effect over Europe.

I would be interested to know how the Sparrow's seeker is modeled in DCS. IRL, it was a semi-active homing model, or a beam rider. Meaning, you would lock your radar on to a target in single-target-track mode and the missle would home in on the radar reflections off of the target. This was one of the reasons the early Sparrows had such a bad reputation. If the target could jink hard enough and fast enough, it could get out of the FoV of the tracking radar, and the missle would go cold. However, if the target did not jink, the Sparrow could be devastating.

Well the Phoenix did surprsingly well against the warbirds, I guess it's because they are so slow, a big missile at 250 knot is still faster than zeros.

With all of the various Pearl Harbor scenarios that you have done, I wonder what it would be like to only modernize the American defense with the addition of sea wiz guns for better defense of the harbor/ships. And, maybe have the Americans reevaluate the early reports to realize what is about to happen with just enough time to allow better ship defenses and get some planes into the air. But, nothing enough to have even numbers or mount an attack on the imperial fleet. So, keep the numbers in favor of the Japanese but give the Americans more time to defend plus the addition of very accurate modern sea wiz. No modern missiles or jets to defend or go on the offense. How big of a difference would that make? Then, if successful, set the ships out to hunt down the imperial fleet. If I understand it correctly, the Lexington and Enterprise were on their way back from (midway?) so they and whatever support ships may have been able to provide aerial surveillance/support as the Japanese try to retreat.

One extra IJN carrier and the carrier tonnage on each side would have equal-ish. Just an observation not a dig.

Why are the F-14’s keeping their wings retracted in high speed configuration? So far I’ve only seen a couple with their wings set in the wide slow speed configuration

Each Phoenix missle needs its own oil cooler attached to the jet, very power hungry and they weigh a bit too.

Do you think it might be interesting to fight 4v4, 1each fixed wing, rotor, ground unit, surface ship. Each team can have a single unit per era/gen so you need to choose. Last team standing gets the win. Do you bring an F35 and Yamato, or F15 and the newest missile cruiser? Not real science, but it sounds fun.

Modern naval doctrine is based on the long range missile attack. Everything built around it is just supportive. GR: Lets try WWII vs Modern navies but take away long range missiles to make it interesting.

I'm guessing the A-7 Corsair isn't available? The Corsair would have been perfect for attacking the carriers with while the Tomcat covered them.

to be clear it the A-4 Pilots were using thier Aircraft correctly they would be using Boom and Zoom Tactics. Climb dive straff Climb out.

Yra this definitely seemed a bit too easy for the blue guys. Even with the Tomcats bugged it wasn't even close. 1 modern destroyer would have taken out half those zeros. I would suggest no escort ships for the same mission

my question should be the US destroyers and frigates should provide alot of anti air support shooting down japanese fighters and has a ton of anti air missles. Also those US support ships will have anti ship missles as well.
