Hi everyone! Thanks for watching yet another one of my videos. I hope you enjoy this restoration.
This is a 1940's (I think) Portass lathe made in Sheffield. I bought this quite cheaply off a good friend of mine. It was in pretty rough shape and a little rusty.
I will be doing a follow up video testing it out.
Let me know what you guys think. Leave a comment.
As usual guys, please like and subscribe it's very much appreciated!

Hello Rosie👍 Ben Put me here, glad he did, an amazing Lathe, 65 + seperate pieces, can’t believe the tool post bed is Hued from a solid piece of steel/cast iron? & shaped & not sure if the pulley side is cast or from solid but oh my god for something on such a small footprint it’s sublime. Please please try & get this running & show us watchers it run, nice paint & restoration, you have patience in spades👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.......

Everything is cast iron and it is certainly beautiful! It does run and very nicely, I’ve just been sidetracked with other things to get a video done. Thank you for your kind words! 😁

This vid has been a godsend, bought a 1930's earlier last week and now I have watched this a couple of times am going to restore first before putting to work. I wanted a smallish one basically for watch making and model steam parts and my one came up super cheap so pulled the lever on it. Got a small quick change tool post coming from China plus some cheap carbide tools, also bought a lead screw coupler and a rather handy motor and controller unit which I am going to make a power feed with but won't damage the lathe casting itself as it will be mounted on the baseboard I have it set up on. Also bought a cheap variable speed controller for the 2hp Clarke motor it came with so it can be set up on one belt and again without damaging lathe body :)

Cracking Job! I have a similar lathe and then an earlier Victorian example on a cast iron floor stand. Nice video! I like the girder adjustable also!

I’m aware thank you. Lathes as old as this tend not to be solely original and over time things get replaced or lost. But thanks for your comment 👍🏻
