1942 Packard 180 Victoria Darrin 

In NZ we have a large Packard Museum. 52 Packards. If you’re ever here I’ll take you up to Whangarei NZ. Love the American history of vintage and classical cars and even the bikes too.

That 1st dark blue Packard Darrin owned by Gene Autry is AMAZING!!! What a beautifully sculpted shape it has. It's an incredible work of art.

Worth mentioning, the auto industry deleted all chrome trim and whitewall tires early in model year 1942, producing only "blackout" cars to conserve strategic materials for the war effort, even deleting the spare tire before all civilian auto production was suspended in January of 1942.

That blue is just gorgeous! Packard seemed to totally lose its way after WW2. Their pre-war styling exuded luxury, but after, they were just ugly. WYR= any/all of them. NTT=???. Great vid, and good that your voice is back.

Hi Jay! The '42 Darrin is a very, very, nice looking car! So cool you showed the ad for the Packard marine engines which powered our PT boats durn the war. These engines were actually a development of an aircraft engine Packard had made. Even more lucky for the Navy, was that these engines were also used by boat racers during the 1930's, and some of those mechanics had joined the Navy for the war effort, and were able to get even more power out of them than they were rated for. They also helped with the reliability of them. A drawback was, that the Marine engines needed high-octane aviation gas to run properly. Sometimes it was a challenge to get enough fuel for both the planes and the boats out to the South Pacific. Each PT boat had three of these Packard engines and they were THIRSTY. WYR. . .#1 1942 Darrin! Gene's example makes me want to sing some Gene Autry songs! As well as his western songs, he also sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Here Comes Santa Clause, which became hugely famous! #2 1937 Darrin! i like the longer, lower look! Have a good week!

I started drooling again with this beauty, but I think the earlier model yrs seems even a bit more "droolish" with their being low slung 😊 It saddens me that such elegance is somehow totally lost in "modern" car styling, though, of course, today's cars are functionally superior in almost every way.

WYR1: The Packard 180 Eight was a torque monster, the front suspension was sophisticated when compared with the Lincoln leaf spring set-up. Even though the Lincoln came with a twelve, the Packard was a better ride and better performer. Cadiddle-yak looks like a low-line DeSoto by comparison, and can't approach the Packard's prestige or style. WYR2: Darrin actually liked the "junior" Packard 120 chassis for his convertible "Victoria" and I notice the 1940 you illustrate is not a Victoria, but a Darrin convertible sedan. If I remember correctly. Packard catalogued a Darrin Convertible Victoria on the "Twelve" chassis as late as 1939. Any Darrin from this period would be great as a Sunday driver, if not for daily driving. By the way, George Peppard drove a '41 Darrin One Eighty convertible in the TV series _Banacek._.

My father did a load of work on a 42 Convertable that wasnt a Darrin. Very nice cars and loaded with complex options. Power roof, seats and windows all driven by hydraulics.

It's a pretty car. I like the styling of the 1940 better than the 1942. I think my favorite category of old cars is original unrestored and I have special fondness for utilitarian cars and trucks - everyman work vehicles. I appreciate all the hard work and time you put into producing these videos.

12:15 I'm surprised this car has a black clutch pedal. The "Electromatic" clutch was a popular option, and was most easily identified by a red pedal.

I'll take the stinkin' Lincoln, just so I can get parts.

The last time I saw this car it was Burgundy. It was on a calendar in the late 1970's.

Another outstanding automobile. I love prewar Packards. I was at a local car show today and there was a gorgeous '34 Packard coupe there. I admired the Goddess of Speed up close. WYR #1 - the Packard. WYR #2 - all three! Will you be going to the Greenfield Village Old Car Festival this year? You should be able to attach royalty-free music to your video. I wonder whether the YT police know what royalty-free music is.

No mention that the Darrin bodies were made in the former Auburn-Cord plant in Connersville, IN? Packard should have bought the body plant. I would have saved them grief when Chrysler bought Biggs in the 1950's and stopped them from building Packards.

Makes you wonder how more more advanced automobiles would become if there was no WW2 ! 5 years lost to the sands of time !

Such a gorgeous car! How cool would it be to own this? I'd choose the '42 Darrin in the first scenario and the '37 in the second. I like the headlights in pods a little better than in the fenders and the horizontal grill bars are a little much on the front end. I think the '37 looks a little more elegant without them. But just a little. There are some styling features of the '42 that I like more than the earlier years. I love all prewar Packards! I was listening for Back in the Saddle Again for the NTT but I suppose that would have been way too obvious.

I'd take the Packard, and the 1940 Packard. Imagine having two of them.

WYR 42 PACKARD DARIAN, 37 PACKARD DARIAN. I guess this must have been an early model made before Pearl Harbor, because as another poster mentioned most cars afterwards had a blackout grill. Or perhaps a well meaning someone decided to restore it the way it was supposed to look. Although as you said trim parts are very difficult to find. In any case I am glad the car looks like it does. Simply gorgeous. The painted grills looked dull and plain.

I am not sure if these had power tops but if they did the small switch next to the OD might be for the top! Most cars placed the power top switch in odd or stuck on positions since the number of convertibles didn't make it worth spending money to add a button/knob in the main controls.

The 1940 Packard looked very much like a cord. The 1942 got a bit more bulky

There's no question about it cars and trucks from the mid 1930s all the way to the mid-1960s were the most beautiful ones ,but the late 40s to mid 50s were the best
