I remember getting into my dad's old WWII K-ration box when I was a little kid. I remember trying to chew the gum; it just fell apart in my mouth. Apparently it didn't have the gum base ingredient in it that modern gum has. I remember that dark waxy paper, too. The whole package was still in pretty good shape (this was around 1956) so the Camel cigarettes were sampled out behind the barn. :-) When I went to Vietnam, the troops were still getting cigarettes in their C-rations. Watching you unbox this brought back a lot of memories for me. Thank you.

Kinda cool to watch this. Brought back memories of my grandfather telling me about WW2. He would have turned 93 last month but he passed in 2012. He served in the 90th infantry division in the Army. He used to tell me about these K rations and how since he didn't smoke he would trade off his cigs for the chocolate bars. Said it wasn't hard to get at least 2 if not 3 bars for one pack of cigs. He'd have a collection of them in his pack and he would give a lot of them out to the little French kids in the war torn towns they would pass through. Anyways, cool video!

In the the 1970's we received rations in boot camp as a demonstration on what we could expect for meals. The K and C rations were from WW2 and Korea. We ate the food and even tried the smokes which were a bit brown on the paper wrapping. Not bad, for being 25-30 years old at the time. The smokes were lucky strikes and they were strong as hell...hahaha

As a kid in the 50s there were real Surplus stores that sold the real military surplus equipment. C and K rations were also on the menu. We bought the Cs, the Ks were crap! Everything was still fresh, as fresh as you were going to get it anyway. It was great for camping and playing war. Kids still did that back then! The flavor of the Sterno tabs can still be remembered like it was yesterday! The jungle bar was always a treat. You could set it in the direct sun and it didn't melt.

How come these are typically in such a bad shape ? You got to eat some peanut butter from the Korean war, only a few years after. Didn't turn into freaking dust and it didn't look like the cans in those RCIs were particularly revolutionary and rust-proof or whatnot.

They are over 70 yrs old. The can rusted out and the liquids ruined everything else. Hardtack on the other hand properly stored would still be good.

great upload. my grandmother worked as a civilian in a warehouse for the army in the 60's and 70's and she used to bring home tons of stuff all military related from army jackets, k-rations, folding shovels to flashlights...this bought back some good memories. ty 😀

My father fought in WWII and used to talk about how he loved K Rations. He said the soldiers used to throw the chocolate out to the German orphans. He was a staff sargeant with the Railsplitters, 84th Division, drafted after the Battle of the Bulge. Some of these K Rations had bacon, his favorite. He was in Germany the last year of the war, and then another year during the reconstruction. He passed away in 2008 from Alzheimer's and I love this video cuz now I can see whst he was talking about. Thank you!

Great videos! I really like how you show close-ups of the item labels, which usually include the names and addresses of the manufacturer. I usually Google the names of those manufactures, and more times then not, the companies still exist, although most have moved their manufacturing plants overseas. I'm also astonished to see how many of those factories were located in New York/New Jersey. I've lived in the NYC area my entire life, and most all those factories are long gone :(

Wow thats awesome, Im actually from Fulton Ny, Both my Great Grandmother and Grandfather, worked and retired from there. Sadly the Nestle building has recently been/being tore down. They moved to Canada.... Fulton, the city with a future! This really does put a smile on my face. As a kid when it got muggy or was raining the smell of Chocolate filled the air. Dont get to smell it anymore but that plant had said to put out the best Crunch bars the world has seen!

So I've watched Band of Brothers many times. When it first came out when I was a kid, and randomly throughout the years after. I watched your video on WW2 rations and just happened to notice, that in part 4 "The Replacements," one of the troopers gives a Dutch collaborator a ration kit. And its looks exactly like your video! How awesome. Little things make me happy haha :) Glad they kept details like that down to a T.

Really interesting, and nice to see the old packaging, I remember finding some old ww2 cigarettes in the pockets of some old uniforms in Newzealand, this was in the 70s and they were still pristene, good as new, there were two kinds, camels like those and players navy cut, the cellophane wrappers were sealed, but the packs were stamped "army issue" the players were in a cylindrical tin. The uniforms had been in a wooden trunk in a farm shed since the end of the war. Funny how that ww2 stuff became more rare around that era, there used to be surplus shops that sold mainly ww2 gear in those days.

Compared to today's MRE's and this one, they definitely didn't have enough food or calories in it. The ones now never filled me up in the field so I know those guys in the 40's had to of been starving. On the upside they got smokes and chocolate tho

K-Rations were meant to be used by airborne troops, recon, that sort of thing. They were basically short term survival food until the troops could get their standard rations.

+Tender Sheep I seriously suggest you look into food safety as just a general thing. Knowing what makes food bad, and how to differentiate food that's unpleasant from food that's unsafe is a pretty valuable skill. For example, most things packaged in sealed containers like canned foods will be safe to eat nigh indefinitely. They'll degrade over time, but they're very unlikely to ever become unsafe to eat as long as their casing is intact.

My jaw DROPPED when I first saw this, I had no idea that any vintage K Rations still existed! I wasn't too surprised that the can disintegrated though. That little folding stove was awesome, I had no idea that they had anything like that back then, I thought those fuel tablet stoves were more recent. Excellent video!

Steve1989, I've watched some other MRE channels recently. Your curiosity, range of knowledge and understated enthusiasm completely sets you apart. I just closed a clip of someone snickering about a non-English word. Last night you were reading Chinese. this is amazing! I'm staying with my father for a bit and he lives in fulton ny (I used to live there) and that factory is right down the rode that made the chocolate! ! I have always herd story's on how u used to be able to smell the chocolate in the air! sadly tho most of it is being torn down now, but hearing that that was made here so long ago was awesome, your videos are fantastic! !

actually depending on the contents the K ration will still survive, specifically the Soy bean nuggets that they packed into some of these. Those nuggets are like tack now but the stuff would certainly still be edible to this day.

I grew up in Fulton New York in the late 90's through mid 2000's. The old Nestle factory was open until late 90's. We used to play little league baseball games behind the factory. To this day I can still remember the smell of chocolate and baseball!! Pretty incredible to see my small hometown pop up in this!

There was a surplus store in Vancouver, BC that had a drum full of those folding C ration stoves, they also had cardboard tubes of hexamine fuel tabs that were in your video (not wrapped in paper, but cardboard tubes that had 6 or 8 heat tabs).

My best friend in the late 90s dad was on Iwo Jima and more and would give us some K rations to take to the hunt club, he had cases! We loved them mainly cause neither of us had extra cash. We got a kick outta how old some of the kits were most were ww11 times.

The Cracker Jack ration came with a suprise..A piece of fossilized gum.I was expecting you to sample the rusted can.."It has a savory,but very metallic taste which was common with rations back then".😅😅

This ration always reminds me Band Of Brothers ep 4 where they hand out one of those to a holland civilian woman, the attention to detail of the ration was a nice touch.

I got one of these at an estate sale for $2. Note that while the contents are identical, my supper unit is not late war, because It is not the morale box like shown in the video. 70 year old meat's in that box, as well as chocolates and cigarettes. Very cool to see what's inside without having to destroy my sealed example. Thank you for this amazing video.

If you were born in 1989, you were only 10 when I joined the Army. I have respect for you, doing these awesome videos. I was in Iraq and I ruined the change of command ceremony, when the US gave back power to the Iraqi-soldiers in 2009.

Noah Schierenbeck Back in '99 they had a "Find the gray M&M and win $100,000" promotion and, in my MRE, I found it! In a random Korean field, with monsoon level rain pouring down, it dissolved shattering this Infantryman's dreams... I still went on to serve another 8 years. But, what if?
