This is a 1950 Navy Survival Ration given out to sailors when they had to jump ship. It's a simple 360 calorie Ration - just enough to keep you alive if in a liferaft trying to survive. RC Gusto sent this one to me - super generous and nice of him! If you don't know RC Gusto, he's a fellow MRE Reviewer - and an amazing dude. Very good friend and I gotta say - you folks really need to check out his channel! He also reviews one of these and also has some other absolutely fantastic reviews - check him out!

Great video. Thanks for making it. Maybe I can add some info to this. I'm 73 years young. My dad worked at Mt. Rainer Ordinance Depot in Tacoma, WA during the 50s. The pilot survival kits came from the Charm factory in 5 gallon tins, just a larger version of this tin. At MROD and other instillations they were repacked. The round cylinder that you mentioned was a repack, as well as square and rectangular shaped steel containers. Some were over 40 gallons in size. I hope that this helps. Cos it's been sitting in plastic wrapper for decades. Plastic is made from oils. Shouldn't be putting that anywhere near your mouth after so many years.the oils from the wrapper is pretty much infused with the candy.

In 2081 when someone reviews a 65 year old MRE from 2016, either the chemicals and preservatives will keep it in very good condition....or maybe the chemicals will degrade and cause some weird exo thermic reaction where wheat snack bread will burst into flames upon opening and will create an unchecked nuclear chain reaction when combined with meat in bbq sauce? Just a thought LOL. It's late-don't judge. And you've got such cojones trying to eat some of these antique foods. Not just trying them, but enthusiastically wanting to try them. Hey Steve, my dad fought in Alaska in WWII and he said that his ration kit contained a packet of coffee about the size of a regular instant coffee packet. However, it was super concentrated and was meant to last a week. He said, that you would dip a toothpick into it and then put it into hot water and that would make one cup of coffee. He thought it was meant for one up and he poured the whole packet into the cup and got the shock of his life. Are you familiar with this?

This reminds me of being in the Navy. Our Deck Division would PM all of the life rafts and water survival gear. When anything was past its expiration date they would just throw it away and order new supplies. Back then I did not think about collecting those items, I still kick myself for that. You can eat so many of those items providing that it isn't things like the spaghetti in a can. Providing the can isn't bulging, open or rusted, the food is typically okay.

@@FurbyGender ITS 60 YEARS OLD! Even if it has lasted long, it shouldn't be consumed, things grew in these things such as mold and bacteria. It's expired food from another time period, and some e. coli might come out to play.

Items that are sugar or mostly sugar, like honey, are so dry they absorb the moisture from the surrounding environment. If they are kept free from moisture or high humidity environments, they will last indefinitely.

Candy, or chewing gum in a survival ration is a morale booster. Plain and simple. Smoking might not work at sea but chewing gum works. In a grim situation, gum might help me feel just a little bit better.

Sometimes when you’re being exposed to allot of really old MRE’s and what not, the appreciation of how long ago 50, 60, 70 years actually is starts to numb you. A way I can receive the full shock value and visualize how much time it really is by thinking “ that candy he is eating is from a time that was 13 years before jfk was shot. Event markers are a great tool of measurement and scale.
