I write this on the 4th of May 2020, the day on which the Dutch remember those who have fallen during World War Two and after that on peacekeeping missions. Those who fought and died in the Dutch East-Indies are remembered too, as the role they have to play on the Dutch remembrance day is still debated. Now, we don't want to go into the modern debate about how they should be remembered, as we're not here to discuss politics. This video should at least provide the context to that debate. If you choose to share your opinion, please do keep our rules in mind. Also, I want to give a shoutout to Stefan a.k.a. In our Dutch history lessons we're thaught about the 'politionele acties'. Pure factional information which is being discussed in class. The general agreement is that it was major excesses of the Dutch government. Faithing remnants of a once colonial power. It was also recognized as a warcrime by the current Dutch government. Though generally it's not an topic which is active remembered. The same like we don't blame the current German state for ww2.

I hate to be the generic indonesian commenter here, but i want to express my sincere gratitude on you for covering this topic (which is very rarely done by youtube channels like you). As an indonesian student, we study our fight for independence to no end, presumably to strengthen our nationalism. However, I had no way of telling the accuracy of the things they teach us at school as you can tell that they overglorify our side of history and we rarely hear of the hideous things that happened on our part. So once again, thank you for providing a new perspective on the independence of my nation!

One of the examples of this case is the “Bersiap” period, which was mentioned in the last episode, where nationalists persecuted those who allegedly supported the dutch. I’ve never seen it mentioned in the school textbook, let alone hear about it from my teacher. I’ve only come to know about it when i had interest in learning about my home town’s history, Depok, which was once a significant dutch residential area and has a christian majority. To my surprise, my elderly christian neighbor told me she is a survivor of that time when I asked her if she knew anything about the bersiap period. she told me tales of how she and her family had to hide in the thickly jungled river valleys in the day to avoid the youth who go door to door in search of “dutch supporters” to “punish”, and can only return to their homes at night. Many civilians were slain, houses burnt to the ground. It was a really sad part of the history, and to know it all happened at the place where I live. It scares me how easily it is to sweep incidents like this under the rug. I hope to uncover more of the dark side of the revolution.

@@ferdinand.bumpliz Hey Fareez salam kenal, last year there was an exhibition in Hoorn, the Netherlands about the descendants of the 12 Depok families spread all over the world (Indonesia, the Netherlands, US) and I accidentally met the person who started the project a few months later, who told me about how she found the remaining Depok families. My stepdad grew up around Salemba in Jakarta and he told me that a lot of Depok families lived in his neighbourhood after they had to run away from Depok during the Bersiap. His brother married someone who is from a Depok family. It was always thought that the Depok families were ethnically Dutch, but actually they were descendants of former slaves, who were a mix of Balinese, Ambonese, Bugis, Sundanese and possibly Mardijkers/Portuguese-speaking slaves. My grandfather served in Indonesia from 1946 to 1949 mostly on Java. He was suppose to serve there for half a year and had to stay for 3 years. He was conscripted into the army right after WW2. He served in 4th Regiment Huzaren van Boreel. He hardly ever spoke about it. I didn't even know about it when until i was in my late teens! He hated war with an unhealthy passion. During WW2 the neighborhood he lived in, in the town of Doesburg was mostly spared, but he already had his fair share of what war was like, only to be conscripted into a war he never wanted to be a part of. It changed him, making him into a life long pessimist. He didn't like the dutch royals. He was under the impression that he was fighting there to protect the royal financial assets and protecting the locals was not on the agenda. The only few things he told us was, some of the officers he served under did even more gruesome things than the rebels they where fighting and that he lost some of his friends. But in general, when we asked about what hes been through, he always had the same answer: It was too horrible to talk about it. He went to his regimental reunion once, only to be confronted very same officers that he despised and having their wife's with them praising their husbands military achievements to high heaven. Schools back when I was young where also very good about not educating us about what happened in Indonesia. It's a bloodstain on our history and they wanted to make us forget. I'm still proud of what our little country has achieved historically but, I never loose sight of the cost of it all! Edit: The irony of it all that is we Dutch faced the same type of occupation by the Spanish 300 years earlier and had to fight for our independence as well! I guess the later generations didn't learn from that.

The Indonesians had seen the Asian Japanese humiliate the Dutch and other Westerners. The spell was broken and they sensed weakness. No matter how much strength the Dutch showed, the Indonesians still sensed the weakness. The prewar tactics that allowed a few Westerners to control millions of Asians no longer work. This was the Japanese accomplishment in spite of their losing the war. Their initial successes excited colonial populations and made them ungovernable.

True, more often than not history is still (ab)used to enforce a national narrative and forge a national identity. While the suffering caused by nazism for example is now an inherent part of the German historical narrative (vergangenheitsbewaltugung), the Dutch is still very much built on former glory, neutral sobriety and discipline and hard work. the fact that the Dutch still believed to be able to "recolonize" Indonesia, after the proklamasi 17 August 1945, is unbelievable. The Zeit Geist was clear, no more colony, and this after the Dutch has been just colonized by the Germans. We were united, the whole area was united, the majority wanted Republic of Indonesia. No federation what so ever, under any local kingdoms or loose connection to the Dutch was wanted. Sure there was some unlawful killing happening, and it was wrong and had to be dealt with. Just go back to the Netherlands and evacuate those Dutch persons in Indonesia, was enough. Useless 4 years of war.

One of the reasons the Dutch hold tightly to Indonesia is the fact that there were substantial white settler population of around 250,000 in 1940. In some cities like Bandung or Malang, the white population reached up to 25% of total population. Compare to the British who never had more than 100,000 Brits on the ground to rule over India. With much smaller Netherlands population, the presence of large white community in Indonesia should be felt even more.

i think it also has something to do with the bersiap period. if all white/half white and other minorities get murdered from your country there is virtually no way that you can let your colonies go. not that this excuses the actions taken but gives sort of a justification to the actions.

@@jochemvanrens8938 You are dreadfully wrong. Most of european population in Indonesia pre-WWII are perished when IJA landed in Dutch East Indies. This might be sounds very gore but our history wrote down that IJA commited a huge number of unspeakable indiscriminate war crimes towards europeans in Dutch East Indies since the day they landed. In many cases, high rank military and civil officers from european part were simply rounded up and beheaded en masse in their own homes or villas even after they surrendered willingly. Christian and Catholic church leaders which at that time highly dominated by europans were also rounded up and thrown to the prison camp. Many european civilians also perished in the prisoner camp, tortured to death by the Japanese or end their own life after no longer able to kept their sanity in check after getting a prolonged inhumane torture/sexual abuses from Japanese, while up to thousands also perished when the Allied accidentaly torpedoed a prison ship that carries thousands of Allied POW from Dutch East Indies to Burma. And to makes things becomes bitter to them, many of the european survivors from the Japanese occupation are choose to kept loyal to the Netherlands eventough the political landscape has changed very dramatically when Indonesia declare its independence and also happily grab the arms that were confisticated from the surrendered Japanese to fight side by side with NICA when the Dutch wants to reclaim Indonesia as their colony, making a huge number of those survivors all in sudden becomes a very prime enemy that were most likely ended as the very first casualities when the conflicts between Indonesian freedom fighters and KNIL/NICA escalates into full blown war. Had we brutally massacre the Dutch/European population like you've accused then supposedly no Indonesia would not have a sizeable number of European/mixed European descendants that were filled tons of roles in our country from politician, military generals, all the way up to models and movie artists/actors.

I have got to admit that this was not an easy episode to watch, but nonetheless has to be told to fully understand the whole situation here. The Dutch may have thought that using the pre-war ways of pacification masked as "police actions" might work again as in the past, but in a post war, Cold War environment setting, this was highly unlikely to work well with international support against such actions. Indeed, this does have some foreshadowing for what the French, and later the Americans might do in Vietnam in the near future...

Oktober 30th 1947 my uncle writes in his diary about his departure with the ship "Nieuwe Holland" from Amsterdam. He is part of the "1st recon squadron of the 2nd regiment of the Huzaren van Boreel". He writes "just outside of the piers of IJmuiden starts the open North Sea, it is getting dark, you feel the soft roling of the waves, the lighthouse sends out an enormous beam of light. Suddenly I hear a guy shout "I want off the ship" ... he hangs by the deck's railing ... "I refuse to go" he shouts. Others pull him back onto the deck and I think of the thousands of soldiers of the past who left their homelands like we do now. At least there are no hostile subs." On November the 28th they disembark at Tandjong-Priok, Java, and that evening he writes looking back on the 30 days at sea: "I often enjoyed the beautiful sunsets, or Moon in the night, alone or with others. It's a pity that not everyone enjoys that. But I also had moments where you find plenty incomprehensible and difficult. Why this and why that?I often connect that with God and faith, probably due to my upbringing and His 'guidance'. Versnel (one of his mates) knows all this with quite some certainty but I ... I can't see through all that. There is so much that is hypocritical and contradictory. Perhaps it is better not to think about it ... I just don't get it figured out. December the 24th, stationed in Tjileungsi, he writes how their patrol picks up 3 "rampokkers" with TNI papers. They deliver them to an improvised KNIL jail. December the 26th he reports the three prisoners have 'disappeared' ... "two underground and one in a 'kali'.".

So...basically this whole situation was one big mess. However, as a Dutch guy I appreciate this series greatly. I have to admit, during my education, not much attention - if any at all! - was spent on this period of history. Of course everyone *knew* that "things" happened in Indonesia after the war. But mostly, it was not really talked about. The only thing I remember from the 70's and 80's is that in our village, a large number of people from the Moluccans lived. I've always been told this had something to do with them choosing not to live in Indonesia, and wanting their own nation state. So they had the option to move to The Netherlands when Indonesia became independent. That was about the extent of what we knew. Anyway, once again, thanks so much for your continued effort to tell the tales of history in a neutral manner. Can't say this enough. These stories need to be told and remembered. We had lessons about colonialism (the majority about WW2) but only one lesson about Indonesia and they called it police actions in the books. My teacher luckily described a slightly more realistic picture of what that was all about. If we celebrate freedom and the resistance of nazi rule we should also recognize that we fought wars of oppression our selves. History cannot change by only showing a romanticized picture but and denying any wrongdoings. I Learned but not from school and that I find is a shame for not all my class mates were so into history. I found a news article some years ago saying they didn't want to teach about Indonesia at all anymore. Erase it from the history books. Conveniently it's always only us that gets the blame. Whenever people want to say bad things about what's happening in Papua, it's simply not true. It's not even comparable to what's happening in Xinjiang anymore, that's in the past in the new order era. Papua is pretty much self governing with special autonomy, Papuans also have a quota of being needed to be accepted into the state civil services every year. Central gov is also pouring in billions to develop Paupa now and no one are saying that it's a waste of taxpayer's money, everyone agrees with the spending, Papua need to be developed. But progress has been slow because of classic problem in Indonesia, corruption. Local gov in Papua is corrupt, not that different to other provinces in other islands, this is really making the progress to develop Papua slow. The reason why the military isn't withdrawn yet is because the resistance movement formed because of suharto's heavy handed hand simply refused to disband nor negotiate for anything except for independence. Reality in the ground is that these "resistance" often provoked the military by attacking civilian population in Papua themselves. Papuans are divided today with people supporting the republic and those still resisting it. These provocations by the "resistance" that attacked civilians in Papua certainly not doing them any favor, as it certainly contributed to them losing support from the people. Always hate when people still want us to take the blame for whatever shit suharto did, YOU THINK WE LIKED THAT GUY ???????????

Dear Time Ghost crew, thank you for one of the most unbiased reviews of this conflict I have come across up until now (as a dutchman). Keep up the good work! I don't know if this tip is worthwhile for you guys, but the Dutch book 'Soldaat in Indonesië, 1945-1950: getuigenissen van een oorlog aan de verkeerde kant van de geschiedenis' from Gert Oostindie, Ireen Hoogenboom en Jonathan Verwey contains many witness accounts of the violence as the writers study these to try and pinpoint where what happened violence wise (spoiler, they fail to 'quantify' the violence, as many accounts are from memoires e.d. and thus later written, unlike diaries)
@TimeGhost
@TimeGhost 4 года назад
I have used parts of that book! Some quotes in this episode are even from their research. And true - while memoires or oral history might not always be suitable to quantify the level of violence (something we also fail to do in this video), it is still a viable tool to explore the level at witch atrocities were committed. Food for thought. The image that is given here of the "police action" is a guerilla and counter guerilla war with no limits. The over all image is that it was the Dutch that were the bad guys only because they had been the bad guys since the 17th century over there. This is not my understanding of that situation over there. Both elements were constantly intertwined. Restoring order means to ask "which order"? The Dutch were quite aware that the period of colonization came to an end. What was tried, was to defend the order that was envisaged. This also meant that for the time being, the Netherlands was responsible for law and order (the old order until the new came). That was not reflecting what the Indonesians wanted, although that was not clear at the time. Even a truce by the UN meant that the killing everywhere went on. The most basic order was not even there. It was complete chaos from day one with a lot of resentment fed by the Japanese (and rightly so! I am not defending colonialism here). It would have been better to give it all up and go home, probably (as Nidell says) let Indonesia fight their own wars to determine their future. I think it would have broken up. So I do think that the image painted here is a bit biased towards "anti colonialism". I am anti colonialism, but the situation over there was far more complicated. I wish it was only the question of colonialism or not. It had that aspect, sure. But it had many more aspects that are not well explained here. Like who to talk to as Dutch representives. Who can keep their word? Who are willing to and able? Who are willing to and unable? Most were unable (willing or unwilling). What to do when nobody is able to see through agreements and the killing intensifies? Very difficult. And yes many (like the USA) sat on a high horse and condemned. Vietnam was yet to come. The war in Indonesia was a combination of the future French and American positions in Vietnam condensed in just a few years. Both conflicts had different enablers. But both had the same chaos and atrocities (on both sides).

As said before, it was a kill and only kill situation. Coming from a Chinese-Indonesian, its kind of hard to say who is right and wront since the Republicans were awful to us but the Dutch were kind of no better in hindsight. But generally, all the Dutch really did for us in 1945-1949 was give us another reason to be Indonesian considering that war in the long term is a unifying factor for the present Indonesian state because if you take it away, the end of the New Order(Suharto Era) would've been bloodier.

See where we end and be honest. Maybe we can join in with a new friendship that lasts afterwards. I hope so. Not forget, but forgive on a shared view of history. That is still a long way off, I fear. @@jaymehlee7359 In the Netherlands after 1949, apart from the mixed Indo-Dutch and Moluccans who fled Indonesia, there were also Chinese-Indonesians who were either loyal to the Dutch or European oriented. One of my friends is a descendant of a Chinese family that owned a plantation. At a book publication I recently attended I heard how the lost their land during 1945-1949 and how they came to the Netherlands. Because these Chinese families left Indonesia after 1949, all of them still have Hokkien surnames like Liem, Tan, Oen, while many of those Chinese surnames in Indonesia have been Javanized during the New Order.

@@kykale Not javanized, but Indonesianized. Many took local name according to their region or just regular name across the archipelago. And this also include Indian like name because Indian culture have strong influence in the archipelago prior to the spread of islam(e.g : Chandra). Even so many still keep their chinese name, either fully or only part of it, like what you can see in Hongkong, a combination of canton and western name (e.g Joshua Wong). I also have this mixed name myself, by having a regular Indonesia given name and a chinese surname. Most of these name change is probably just to avoid persecution because of the stoked anti chinese sentiment by Suharto, as many of the older generation that lived through the new order still keep full chinese name.

My father in law worked for the Dutch government before the war, so when Indonesian independence came he fled to the Netherlands. He took his wife and two children with him and built a new life there and his wife even gave him another child: a daughter. That daughter grew up to become my wife of nearly forty years. A few years ago, we went to Indonesia with our daughter , just for her to see "her real country". What surprised me most is that within a few weeks I saw my daughter turn into a true "indo", but when I suggested we go again, she said no. It made me think of what my Dutch grandfather said, many years ago, about the Indonesians: "you'll never understand them".

I would say this is Dutch version of Vietnam War or French Indochina War, Indonesia was lucky unlike other countries post WWII that they managed to proclaim independence 3 days after the Japanese capitulated in August 14th 1945, in the eyes of the UN, USA and others saw the Dutch recolonization attempt of Indonesia as unjustified war since Indonesia is technically independent and free from European recolonization, the US had a hard decolonization policy post WWII and they even threatened the Dutch to pull the Marshall Plan aid to Netherlands if they continue the war. So countries like Vietnam and others who didn't manage to proclaim independence before the European powers get their forces back to claim their lost colonies during WWII, so the US couldn't back the decolonization efforts effectively since the European powers like for example France would threaten the US to leave the West and approach the Soviet Union if the US wouldn't let France recolonize Indochina.

They found them an hour later naked with their throats cut, their personal belongings and uniforms looted and their genitals gone. They had around 40 POW's in their encampment and they killed two of them that night. The captain reported this "incident" the next morning to his CO. He listed it as an act of self defense al he said: " an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth." My grandfather continued to serve in Korea an eventually passed away in 2018 at the age of 98. Please bear in mind that a lot of the excesses were an answer to the way guerilla warfare was conducted and most of the drafted Dutch soldiers had no idea what they where facing and would ultimately be there for 3 years in most cases. Everybody would have had enough at one point. There's no discussion in how our men should be remembered, 95% deserves every sort of honour men should get for trying to carry out an impossible mission. Every veteran I've spoken to states that he should never have been deployed in the first place but branding 150.000 men as being wrong and bad is not right. The only people that should be accused of being so is Dutch politics for failing in every way and sending 18 year olds to the other side of the world with minimal training and equipment to a place they had no understanding of. Well, that's my piece of mind.

LITERALLY what the dutch just got after WWII, isn't it bloody ironic? the natives didn't know too that these "harmless" foreign soldiers were only following orders... well it didn't matter whether they acted on their own autonomy or someone else's directives... What is clear is that the soldiers are interfering w/ their rights to a soverign independent state. The dutch gov is accountable, but the mistakes the veteran did doesn't justify them being innocent.

@@realready39 I agree on the matter of irony that the Dutch had just prevented becoming a colony of Germany ourselves, absolutely! The thing that bothers me is that when referring to anything going bad 'the Dutch Army' is being held accountable. So, 'the Dutch Army' (consisting then of about 150.000 people, spread out along numerous places in the Archipelago and responsible for a vast array of tasks) is held accountable as one body. So, a lorry driver belonging to the army, a radio operator never leaving the base and a cook are held just as accountable for warcrimes commited by elements of the Dutch Army at the other side of the Republic. Some infantry units were deployed to secure areas and never saw action during their entire tour. But, they were the army so upon the return, they were, and are stil seen as controversial together with veterans who might have done things in conflict with the Humanitarian law of conduct. This is not right and generalises the idea that every Dutch trooper, no matter where he was deployed or what task he had was bad.

This reminds me of the whole Andi matter back then as well (Andi is a special calling for nobles here). Supposedly, old Buginese and Makassarese nobles in South Sulawesi have never use the Andi calling in their name (i.e Andi Ari Putra) to signify their nobility. If I'm not wrongly remember, it was first being introduced by the Dutch East Indie government to call the educated part of the nobles here and to garner support from the local nobles and in return providing several benefits for them from the bestowing of said calling. While my family is of Buginese nobles, my grandfather and most of my big family refused to use the calling. Some did used it, but only a few to "remind us of family history". Am not too clear of the real reason, but I think it was because my grandfather's generation was pro-independence.

Not to minimize the horrific things the Dutch have done during the 3 century long colonial rule but: Ironic, the Indonesians suffered under Dutch occupation and then oppress the smaller groups in the republic that wanted to be their own country. Edit: Not to be too pessimistic but power corrupts absolutely and often when the opressed find themselves in a position power after the fight for freedom the first thing they'll do is consolidate their power and often that isn't pretty. It almost always happens although that doesn't make it excusable of course. Americans going from fighting for their independence to fighting for their right to own dark skinned individuals. The Indians fighting for their independence and now starting to treat Muslim s like the Germans treated Jews in 1933-45. Russian peasants being oppressed by the tzar and after that letting Ukrainian peasants starve and stalinist purges. The Dutch fighting for religious rights and independence from the Spanish and then starting a purge of catholic priests. History is filled with it.

Darkly humorous note: 'Westerling' is literally Dutch for 'Westerner' As in 'person from the west' By the way, as a Dutchman myself: Far too little is commonly known about the Idonesian War of Independence here in the modern-day Netherlands While it is commonly known that the Dutch did bad things in the name of 'police action', I think most people know very little of the details. To take myself as example, I'd heard the name 'Sukarno' before, but I couldn't have told you who he was and all the other names are new to me. Very happy to be abe to learn more about this underexposed part of history, and my massive thanks to the TimeGhost team for being both informative and engaging as always. Also, I'd like to mention that my grandfather grew up on the Idonesian island of Java, (his parents owned a plantation so yes, my family was very much part of the oppressive colonial system), so I've always felt a sort of personal connection to Indonesia that I can't really put in to words. Best I can say about it is that Idonesia feels like a part of my personal history, even though I haven't been there yet. (Very much on my to-do list) The fact that it took till 2020 for the Dutch government to officially apologize for the violence committed by it's troops is a disgrace, in my opinion, and should have been done much, much earlier.

A new neighbourhood in Amsterdam will get street names named after Indonesians: Soewardi (aka Ki Hadjar Dewantara), Tan Malaka, Diponegoro, Pattimura and Soekaesih (pretty unknown female prisoner of the Boven-Digoel prison camp who published a brochure named 'Indonesia, a police state'. This will be on the newly constructed Centrumeiland in the IJburg neighbourhood. There have been discussions why Soekarno is not one of the streets and the thing is that it's seen as sensitive among the KNIL-veterans and some Indo-Dutch. Also, in Indonesia Tan Malaka in Indonesia itself isn't as revered. (sorry for copying this from the previous video, but I just want share it with as many people)

There are several existing streets named after Indonesians: Raden Adjeng Kartini (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, Venlo), Mohammad Hatta (Haarlem, Rotterdam, Ede), Soetan Sjahrir (Haarlem, Leiden, Gouda, Muntendam) and the lesser known Ario Soejono (Amsterdam), an Indonesian who was in the Dutch resistance against the nazi occupation and the son of Raden Adipati Soejono, the only Indonesian minister in the Dutch government (in exile).

@@btw6301 Not true! My brother and his unit took many Indonesians prisoner who were released after a few months and were taken prisoner again. My brother who spoke with his commander to ask what to do with them. His commander said: "We won't shoot them. We adhere to the Geneva conventions and don't shoot our prisoners, despite the fact the Indonesians kill most of our men they have taken prisoner!"

@@btw6301 I mean, that's just what it is, have you been paying attention to what's going on in the war ? Central gov of Indonesia barely have control over the armed groups, this is why, as you will see in the next episode, that Dutch tactic of cutting the head (by capturing Sukarno and Hatta) failed, because these armed groups weren't taking orders form the central gov in the first place. Your comment is just stupid really. They thought it would work because it worked in their colonial war, including the bloody Aceh war. The Dutch are like you I guess, because they haven't been paying attention to what's going in in the archipelago while they were gone. They didn't know, or maybe even not interested, that the central gov couldn't control all of the armed group in the archipelago, that these armed groups never took any order form the central gov in conducting whatever their agenda is. So their gambit of capturing Sukarno, which they have reserved from doing due to the fear of backlash from the international community, failed completely to end the resistance against the Dutch.

Very interesting coverage on a very obscure topic. How could the Dutch (having suffered under the Nazis) do the same to Indonesians?

If this happened in isolation, an argument might be made, however weak, that the Dutch were just victims of their time. But that this occurred just after the Nazis had occupied them and they inflict racist oppression on others, makes the Dutch worse than Nazis. Yet the world still cries over the poor innocent lowland victims of Germany.
