My 1949 Chevy 3100 with the 54 235 engine gets a new Pertronix high energy electronic distributor, high energy coil and plug wires. I go through the steps on preparing the engine for the swap, checking compatibility and installing the new devices.
I want to thank Pertronix for providing the prototype Flame Thrower electronic distributor with the Igniter II module and Flame Thrower II high energy coil giving me the opportunity to test and evaluate this setup on a modified Stovebolt series 235 engine.

Really good basic information that everybody should know, I had auto mechanics in high school and we had engines on stands, one of the tests that we had was the teacher made the motor not run and we had to figure out how to make it run. well we couldn’t figure it out what the teacher did was use a six cylinder distributor in a V-8 engine he’s a pretty sneaky teacher.

Reminds me of my 1st day in Navair basic aviation "A" school. We were all given a 2 bbl carb and told to disassemble it for cleaning. Once we did they gave us a break and we left the room. The instructor mixed up all the parts and when we came back we were told to reassemble them and we each took a turn bolting our carb on a 6 banger engine on a stand and see if we could get it running. Needless to say none of us could keep the engine running and only a few even got it to start. Definitely a sound tried and true method of getting our attention and motivating us to learn, LOL.

Hey Dave, thanks for sharing. I have points and condenser currently. I was thinking of using the original distributor and putting electronic start Pertronix. Wanted to know what your thoughts are on that. Thanks again
@Volfandt
@Volfandt 3 года назад
To be upfront, I have nothing against a points ignition. Even though some of these new aftermarket points are no where as good as those from back in the 60's & 70's, points are very forgiving and will get you home even when set with a beer, err I mean soft drink pop top, LOL. That said, these new electronic ign setups with higher voltage coils definitely improve on the old points ign technology. There's lots of folks that went to a retro fit electronic ign setup and swear by then while there's some that swear at them. I'm definitely experiencing an all around improvement in my 54 235 with the electronic ign, so much so that I'm not worried about keeping that engine period correct as much as I did when I rebuilt it. I've never installed the Pertronix kit but I believe it uses the same Igniter II module as the dist I'm running and so far I'm very happy with it. Stay tuned as there will be an upcoming Vlog where I put it through some paces. Thanks for watching.

Hey great videos, new subscriber, have a 62 c10 with the 235 and have ordered a hei replacement distributor and was wondering if I have to change to a 12v system for this to work? It’s on my list but trying to get the truck to run better for now
@Volfandt
@Volfandt 3 месяца назад
Hey David. It depends upon which HEI dist you ordered. Some can be 6v while most are 12v. If you ordered a 12v you'll have to upgrade your electrics to 12v. Or you can contact the provider to see if they have 6v versions and see if you can trade them out. Upgrading to 12v isn't that hard. You'll need a 12v alternator, most folks go with a 1 wire GM type, disconnect the regulator, change all your bulbs to 12v and get a special resistor for th epower to your gas gauge (most aftermarket providers have them) and if you have a heater you'll have to either replace the 6v heater motor with a 12v (most aftermarket providers have them) or install a DC voltage converter to step down the 12v feed to the 6v electric motor to 6v (I did this in my 49 GM). Look for a video series I did on installing a heater in my 49 GMC.I cover it pretty good. Good luck.

@@Volfandt you know I didn’t even consider that when I ordered, item says it fits so I just went with it and then started watching your videos and started wondering. Thank you for the reply and videos, as a younger guy who doesn’t know much about these things but wants to do it myself I really appreciate and depend on videos like these. I guess I have some research to do, thanks again

I hit the send before I was done, I was wondering what brand and model number the digital timing light you use is? I know you introduced it awhile ago but didn't find it again. Thanks

Heres a link to it on amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BSY9JE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm very happy with it. The tach function could be more steady (it deviates +/- 20 rpm but thats fine with me. I like that I can adjust the timing light function while running the engine which makes it VERY easy to find what the timing is set at, at any rpm.

Such a great video. What is that vacuum gauge? Did you make that? Cool shirt. I'd buy one.
@Volfandt
@Volfandt 3 года назад
I believe you're asking about the gauge I used to balance the carbs, if so it's a Uni-Sync multi carb synchronizing tool.It's a must have if you have multiple carbs. I made the adapter by cutting out the protective cover that came with the carbs and used duct tape to seal it up, works great. I'm thinking about getting some of those shirts made up. I'll let you know. Thanks

Hey bud on the stock distributor line on the carb end should I be able to pull the line back & forth. Slightly ..when installed in carb. How critical is that for carb .. was wondering if that was my carb issue. Or part of it.. cuz I tighten it but I can still wiggle the line back & forth .is that a vacuum leak?. Not enough vacuum to carb? Please let me know.. wanna get her going. Thx buddy. Appreciate it 🙏
@Volfandt
@Volfandt 2 года назад
The vacuum line between the carb & distributor needs to be air tight when it's tightened. It will definitely be a performance problem & vacuum leak at any RPM above idle. When you accelerate the RPM above idle you should see your entire distributor rotating, that is how the vacuum advance works on these old stovebolt engines. IF it's not moving your engine will stumble and hesitate. So no you shouldn't be able to pull the line back & forth when tightened and a loose vacuum line will cause carb problems. Good luck.

@@Volfandt wow 👏 your awesome. I figured that couldn't be right. So this is my whole problem all along im sure 👍. Needed some reassurance from my stovebolt buddy. I'm going to reflare the line .. I think it's a double flare or just to thick to seat. So im going to just flare it. Should it be double flare? Thx VOLFANDT. Appreciate cha 🙏 bud✊🏽🤝🏽😤

Is your flare a double flare ? Or just a flare?🤔 Just wanna make sure im doing this correctly want to get her running normal after a 15 year hibernation lol . Good lord.. its about time . 🤣🙃 .all I know.. I get her back to running.... I did the work but you gave the knowledge.. for me to lean on. Go BOLTSTOVES.. lol... STOVEBOLT I know.!

@@OGSHAKER2020 I'm not sure. I took it off when I went to dual carbs and it's stashed away in a huge pile of parts. I'd swag that either would do but as I'm sure you know a double flare is better. Good luck

Does the new Distributor moves when you Give it idle? Vacuum Or no
@Volfandt
@Volfandt Год назад
No, the Pertronix Flamethrower distributor operates like a later model dist so only the internal point plate rotates. The Pertronix is basically a later model points type distributor that they modified for their Ignitor II electronic ignition module.
@jerry8a

The distributor was a demo I was evaluating for Pertronix and it wasn't for marketing at that time. Based on how well it's performed I'd be surprised if they're not ready to market it now. Contact www.pertronix.com for more info.

Would a h.e.i. distributor from a 70s 250, 292 fit?
@Volfandt
@Volfandt 3 года назад
Yes but I understand the "stop" on the distributor's housing will have to be machined down in order for it to go deep enough to engage the oil pump. I test fit a 79 HEI off of a 250 into my 235 and the gears engaged and there was plenty of dist cap clearance but I didn't try it. You could lay them out side by side and do some measurements as there are folks that have adapted them to 216's, 235's & 261's. Good luck.
