1950 Gillette razor classic TV commercial with baseball stars Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella.
Harold Henry "Pee Wee" Reese (July 23, 1918 - August 14, 1999) was an American professional baseball player who played for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1940 to 1958. Reese was a ten-time All Star shortstop who contributed to seven league championships for Brooklyn.
Roy Campanella (November 19, 1921 -- June 26, 1993), nicknamed "Campy", was an American baseball player - primarily at the position of catcher - in the Negro Leagues and Major League Baseball. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Widely considered to have been one of the greatest catchers in the history of the game[1], Campanella played for the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1940s and 1950s, as one of the pioneers in breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. His Hall of Fame career was cut short in 1958 when he was paralyzed in an automobile accident.

In the 1950s, and for some decades before that too, having visible beard stubble was considered completely unacceptable. A man who looked that way was a bum who didn't have a job, or was some hick farmer, or was just crazy. Decent men might be allowed to appear unshaven if they'd been out on a hunting trip, or if they were in wartime combat. Otherwise - forget it.

Love that shot of Don Zimmer with a full head of hair!!! Had to be around 1955 or 1956 because Zim went bald shortly afterward.

I still use a razor like that for shaving. It was my dads first razor and it's SOOO much better than any plastic disposable crap that's out there now, it's amazing. Blades are harder and harder to find though. If you can find the old razors like they show here, it's worth the money!

I have may dads old razor ,like the one shown, i just found blades in Walmart ,10 blades for 1.49. It works great.

I think the best think that ever happend to razors was a pivoting head, that has helped shaving even more than those new 5 bladed vibrating razors =P

Why can't they make a quality safety razor nowadays? Young and old are moving away from multi cartridges and going back to traditional wet shaving.

Damn, Don Zimmer looks young in this commercial. Is he even still alive? Forgot to notice the "B" for Brooklyn Dodgers, so used to seeing the "LA".

these old razors are the best, the hell with the new 5 blade razors that cost $20 for blades!

You can. They're called "double edge" razor blades, and any drugstore should have them.

That commercial is from 1952 at the earliest. It couldn't be from 1950 because the front numbers on the uniform were supposed to debut in the '51 Series (thanks Bobby Thomson) but had to wait until Opening Day in '52. Did you notice how skinny Zim was? Great commercial!
@MickTheQuickk

Since Don Zimmer didn't become a Dodger until 1954, the 1950 date is incorrect.

How did people digitize these commercials if back then before the age of VHS it was very hard to record television? I'm guessing organized archives are all that can keep these old commercials?

@fobfan729 you can get Wilkinson Sword blades like this, $15 for 10, they last forever, I have one of the old series razors since I bought up a bunch when an old variety store was closing & just buy Wilkinson refills, next cheapest thing to using a straight razor & almost as close, just have a good after shave handy

@@stevecarlson6462 I agree. I've been using a Gillette Good News Pivot for years and it's the best. I tried a double edge razor a while back and nearly cut my head off. My first razor was a Gillette Techmatic (razor band).

This was the 50s when DE razors ruled. Today Gillettes cartrige blades costs a fortune. I use my self a Merkur 34c and I love it, and DE blades are still manufactured and are way cheaper.

And the new ones can cause major irritation, ingrown hairs and other problems. My skin has improved tremendously since I switched from a 5 blade proglide to a single blade Edwin Jagger. Plus, you can adjust the angle for greater aggression on tough areas and less aggression on sensitive areas. The wrong angle won't mess you up nearly as much as using pressure; that's the only time you'll remove skin, and if you do it once you won't ever do it again.

Try a variety of blades. Some are easier on skin than others. I've used 4 kinds so far. Love two, hate the others. You just gotta find the right blade for your razor, skin type, and hair type, then your shaves become amazing.

@dramzv

@fobfan729 Actually it hasn't really changed, a 10-pack of double-edge blades costs between $5 and $6. You will get the best shave from a DE safety razor or a straight razor, but it requires technique and Gillette (Procter and Gamble) have just made people lazier about these ordinary things in order to become richer. Most people nowadays prefer to spend a fortune on disposable 5-blade razors and get a so-so shave rather than learning how to do it properly and get truly smooth skin.

Wow! The old school razors were so dangerous, thank god for modern technology. On the old razors, you had to hold the blade on an angle, not like todays where the blades are already built in at the proper angle. The old ones would actually shave the skin off your face if you didn't hold it at the right angle.

I hadn't shaved in awhile and had no self-respect, so I scraped my face per this commercial's suggestion and damned if it didn't fill me with self-respect! Encouraged by this I decided to shave my legs, but lost all self-respect in the process. Moral: Don't abuse the self-respect inducing powers of Gillette razors.
