Hello everyone,
Today we are taking care of the omega bumper aytomatic cal.351 from 1950. the watch is practically dead :) the automatic winding is broken and the watch is practically not running. a beautiful steel case will also be refreshed. the result of the work is fantastic, reminding you that the watch is 72 years old at the time of recording!

Thank you Karol, for bringing my watch back to life! It was a 60th birthday present from my wife in 2010, and has great sentimental value for me, quite apart from the fact that I love the watch itself. It was fascinating to watch you restore it, and to see just how beautiful the mechanism is. Your skills are truly impressive

I am in awe of your ability to keep all these gears and pieces straight in the order they should be in! What a craftsman! I love old Omega and Tissot watches. Recently I found my father’s Tissot automatic, circa 1954-1955. I took it to a local repairman who wound it up and the the watch started back like nothing had ever happened. I have been wearing it every day and it keeps time like a champ. I have not been able to tell if it is a bumper or later automatic movement. My repairman did not want to open the watch unless something goes awry so I don’t know serial numbers or model number. All I know is that I feel my father’s presence very close when I wear it💕

So happy to have found your work on a Bumper 351. Back in the late seventies, an older cousin, now deceased, had an old watch that he had pulled the inners out of, suggested that I might be interested in seeing it. He had bought it in 1952 but seems to be a 1948 model. He plunked the movement with a missing minute and second hand in front of me. Where is the rest of it, I asked. He went off looking back in the drawer and came back with a case covered with a tarlike substance and the case back. I had never seen a bumper and shook it, To my astonishment it started running. You can have it, he said. When I got home, after setting the hour hand to the correct hour, I wound it up and left it overnight . The next morning I saw that it had kept time, so set about scraping the tar off what turned out to be a lovely gold-filled case. We had "a local watchmaker" so off I went to see if he could find a case ring, crystal and hands and other missing parts and restore it. He did, although the second hand is a bit short. The dial shows its age, but has a lovely antique look. The gold fill was worn on the high wear points but it still looks lovely. On the night table it kept around + 2 sec/day. I checked it recently and it is still +- 5 sec a day, but I won't wear it until that 45 year service is refreshed. You can see why your repair was of such interest to me. I don't know if it is possible to post a link to a picture of it here, but I can post one if wanted.

Although the dial has been refinished, this is still an Omega watch and you’ve brought it back to life. Working on these vintage movements, it’s important to remember that they reflect the use/abuse of their owners as well as the competence and incompetence of the watchmakers who have serviced them. I can’t imagine how an owner could have bent a train wheel, or forced a balance wheel out of true. Not to mention putting a movement in a case where it doesn’t fit. But much of the fun of working on these watches is that they challenge your skills. Great videos! These are excellent tutorials for those who are trying to learn.

Perhaps the reason why you can’t imagine how an owner (i.e., me in this instance) could have damaged the watch in the way you describe, is that I did not do so. Until I sent the watch to Karol and saw this video, I hadn’t seen the inside of my watch, nor had I dropped it or otherwise abused it - quite the opposite, because my wife bought it, restored and with a refinished dial, for my 60th birthday - and it’s a treasured possession. The bumper mechanism stopped working after about 10 years, and I entrusted it to a watch repairer who had been recommended to me. He stripped the watch, told me that it was not repairable, and returned it to me. I kept it wrapped in a drawer until I was fortunate enough to discover Karol. Correspondence with Karol gave me enough confidence to send it to him for repair, and that confidence was amply rewarded, as you can see from the video. I’ve found it difficult to find someone who can be bothered to carry out skilled service and repair on these beautiful old watches, and as I mentioned, I consider myself very lucky to have found Karol.

Certainly demonstrates the problems with not having front and back rubber ring gaskets, the watches really get dirty with everyday use.

hello i agree with you this is the problem of many vintage watches. dirt is not a big problem yet, you just need to service it regularly. water is a serious problem Regards Karol

That bent wheel increased my respect for horological engineers a thousandfold. Having to overcome not only limited space and minuscule parts, they are still able to incorporate a degree of acceptable error into their designs!

I have the same from 1947. What accuracy it should be. Watch is service by professional watchmaker.
@Karol235
@Karol235 2 года назад
a good mechanism should do a maximum of a few seconds a day plus minus. and there should be an amplitude of 250 or more. did you see the pictures of the timegrapher after the maintenance? ideally the beet error is below 0.5 milliseconds Regards Karol
@igortrinajstic92
@igortrinajstic92 2 года назад
@@Karol235 Thank you for you answer. Yes I saw timegrapher, that’s why I send ghe massage to you. My watch deviates 60 sec per day after TLC. Warchmaker says, it’s because of mainspring. What’s your opinion? Regards Igor
@Karol235
@Karol235 2 года назад
@@igortrinajstic92 what was the amplitude of the watch? it's very possible that it's the main spring. as showing signs of wear, it should be replaced. the max winder watch can show good parameters, but with time it is enough for a few hours to be a catastrophe and the amplitude is much below 200. or poorly done maintenance, chinese oils etc. you also have to remember that from several dozen years old vintage one cannot expect perfect accuracy like modern quartz. I think 60 seconds is acceptable. I would have to see the graph from the timegrapher at max and after 6h 12h etc. and how did the watch work before the service?
@igortrinajstic92
@igortrinajstic92 2 года назад
@@Karol235 Yes I understood what you think, because my watchmaker said the same. I don’t know what is amplitude because I don’t have the timegrapher, but anyway mainspring should be replace. It is hard to find them on ebay. Thank you very much for your time and advices.
