Servicing my first mechanical watch whilst learning the art of horology, a few errors were made and few hard lessons learned! #Vintage #watch #restoration
Details of the movement can be found via the good guys over at the Ranfft website:

It's a pity you don't make videos any more. You presented inexpensive calibres that were accessible to beginners, and you presented your work with humility and common sense. The video on repairing a Timex, for example, is almost unique on RU-vid and has certainly been very useful to many people. I hope all goes well for you and that I see you again on my subscription feed!

Fantastic! I've been working on learning the trade for about 6 months. Using old ladies tiny movements, so normal one look huge! I just recently worked on a similar Waltham and did exactly the same thing with the crown wheel! LOL! Thanks for the video and hope to see more!

I see you are no longer creating videos, but it's nice to see someone that is a novice, as I am, and not a seasoned watch repairer.

I like watching these kinds of videos . Cheap watches … makes it so much better to relate to them rather someone doing a 600.00 to 10,000.00 dollar watch. More for the common people.

Completely agree, a high end watch is interesting to see don’t get me wrong, but not the kind of watch you want to be learning on either 😅 JSG

Absolutely loved it. The time and care that goes into putting these watches blew my mind and I would love to hear more of the history of these watches,

Great video. I am just starting my journey into watchmaking and it is so refreshing to watch an honest video by a beginner. Well done!

Great effort. I've never had the courage to do this myself so have a box load of "projects" sat in my cupboard.

Using a crystal press dye as a “casing cushion” is a massive life hack. I’m 10000% going to use this from now on. Thank you! Edit: I’m starting out with servicing too and I’ve done a couple cheap watches. I’ve been a little frustrated when I don’t get fantastic results. Having the watch run better than it did before servicing is definitely a success and I have to keep that in mind as a very beginning watchmaker. Thanks for your videos, I subscribed, looking forward to seeing you grow.

I always start by demagnetizing the movement, btw im impressed that your skills with tweezers and small tools already are quite good, so either you have a natural talent or you have been practising beforehand, i have read that the guitarist in slipknot a hardcore metal band discovered that he had that talent, and now he works for, i think its Rolex ! Talk about a carreer change 😄👍🏻

I've discovered your channel with your IG, and you did an amazing job ! You're not a beginner at all, keep tinkering with some cheap Vostoks and Seikos and you will be great in no time !! I will definitely stay tuned for more !

Found your channel via your IG profile. I've been toying with the idea of trying this myself. When you were putting the pallet fork in and dropped the tweezers... I thought oh no that was an oh shit moment.. but it wasn't. Great video! Keep it up love to watch these types of videos.

I have found mainspring winders do not always work on pre-1970 watches because the catch is too big for the hole in the mainspring or can't align with the hole. For cleaning, I do a 1st clean in mineral spirits/paint thinner, 2nd in naphtha (the chemical name for lighter fluid), 3rd in isopropyl alcohol (get as little water content as possible). Many professional watch cleaning products are essentially mixtures of mineral spirits and naphtha.

I thought it was just me not knowing how to use the winder set for a while, but glad to know some other people are experiencing the same problems!

Currently in Singapore but planning to move to KL in September. I’ll give you a message when I’m there, would be good to get some proper cleaning products instead of using zippo fluid 😂

Really enjoy watching your videos, can you tell me if u have to hold the button win reinstalling the watch stem, like u do taking it out.
@jsgwatches
@jsgwatches 2 года назад
I don’t believe you need to hold it in to reinsert the stem, that being said however, some movements tend to be a little sticky so need to press just to help it home 👍🏻

why jewels are removed from balance cock and / base before cleaning the parts?

Does the watch stick to the fridge door? If not, it's not that bad ;)
@thegrassyknoll7792

Btw , imo you ought to get hold of a proper watch cleaning machine, i have heard from a watchmaker i know that the ultrasonic wawes could destroy some jewel settings aso if not careful, there are good things when handcleaning though, you get a closer look on details and if parts are broken, have a nice day, and a good watchrepair journey 😉👍🏻

Nice work, i am also trying to set up my own watch making studio. The prices for instruments are just bloody expensive. Currently looking for a good mainspring winder. I see you re using one 11:20. What is that?. Can you please give some links where you bought your stuff Thanks
@jsgwatches
@jsgwatches 2 года назад
My mainspring winder set was a cheap set from China, but to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend. I’ve not been able to use it much, probably only used it for 3 of the 10 watches I’ve serviced! But you can find them on Ali express. JSG

@@jsgwatches means 7 out of 10 winded by hands? What’s your plan for it? Any plans to purchase bergeon? I found one chinese with steel arbor, not brass. I hope it will work.
@jsgwatches
@jsgwatches 2 года назад
@@almasmeiram8463 I have the Chinese version with the steel hooks too, It just doesn’t seem to catch very well, if at all. The arbours seem too thin also. The watches that it has worked on, it’s worked a treat though. I’d love to get a bergeon set, but the price is eye watering my high 😅 I might just have to wait for a 2nd hand set to turn up online 🙏 JSG

The mat is actually a silicon food mat I found online for a couple dollars 😂 I got a few colours I liked and they work pretty well! Some of the branded watch makers mats are crazy money for what they are 🥵

There is a watchmaker in Malaysia on you tube, you might want to ask him about those fluids.. He's also doing restoration videos.. "Watch Repair Channel" might be it...

I’m planning to move to Malaysia in the coming months, so hopefully it will help open some doors to get the correct cleaning fluids. Getting anything into Singapore currently is an absolute headache!

@@jsgwatches I don't know your present (August 2023) situation, but if you're still having difficulty obtaining supplies, perhaps you could contact a laboratory at a nearby university for suggestions. Another possibility would be local or regional manufacturers who use similar solvents, etc. Even private companies may be helpful if it's clear to them that direct economic competitiion is not involved (i. e., this is a hobbyist pursuit, not commercial).
