In a lot of these movies women well into their sixties had model figures. I grew up listening to my mother describe her beauty hacks, dying legs, pencilling on seams, ironing hair with brown paper etc. She told me that she and her sisters would each buy one element of a smart outfit so that they would take it in turns to wear the complete outfit. Helped that they were all the same size but back then post war starvation helped a lot AND the lack of sugar in their diet. They used to dye kaki army blankets to make coats and when they could get hold of a parachute they made blouses and underwear.

Every decade has notable fashion moments, but the mid 50's is just perfection. Dior's "New Look" was and still is my absolute favorite defined shape and clothing. I remember Tame creme rinse to de-tangle after washing. There was no wet-brush invented yet. Regarding the hundred strokes of hair brushing, the beauty tip was to use a natural boar-bristle brush, which was gentle to your hair, not a nylon brush. To make your hair shiny, you would put a cut-off nylon stocking or pantyhose over the natural bristle brush and brush your hair. Aqua-Net hair spray was an essential. My grandmother used Coty Airspun face powder and it is still popular today. They don't sell it any longer, but Hazel Bishop lipstick lasted all day and was like the mood lipstick of its time. These videos bring back memories.

For everyone asking, Vaseline is occlusive, meaning that if you put on a layer AFTER moisturizer, it will trap all the moisture and prevent water loss out of the skin which happens when we sleep. You wake up with extremely soft & moisturized skin. It does work I’ve done it myself, it doesn’t clog pores which many people think, however the only risk is that if you have any makeup on your skin before putting it on it will trap that makeup and cause breakouts. And if you’re prone to milia I would avoid as it can aggravate it. Hope this helps. 👍🏼

I actually just started sleeping with curlers in my hair because I am trying to stay away from heat styling due to hair fall out from an illness and some nights are easier than others 😆 I’ve used a satin pillowcase for several years and I think that helps. If my pillowcase is in the laundry and it’s bedtime, I have a satin head wrap, like a shower cap, which definitely helps keep things in place. I’d recommend at least trying this because it does so much less damage to the hair than hot tools.

I've always been curious about the quality, texture, and ease of application of the cosmetics of that era. I started using makeup when I was in middle school, so around the late 90s. And just in that time I feel like the quality of makeup and skincare has improved quite a lot. Of course, people like Marilyn Monroe could afford the very best, along with the experts to tell them what to use and how to use it.

I wash my hair once a week and it always looks great but back when I was convinced to wash it daily, it was always greasy and I had dandruff so I went back to my old routine. For years I cleansed with either baby lotion of cold cream then ice water dunking, then drying off then a thick layer of moisturiser ( anything ) then after an hour I took it off with a hot cloth and again a cold splash then a lighter cream if the day or heavier at night. I use Pears soap on my body or Savon de Marseilles ( I live in France ). I have always been fanatical about my elbows, knees and heels so I took extra care with them. I was ( and still am ) complimented on my good skin. I also don't drink or smoke which helps.

Those hourglass figures were in part to Dior who brought back the hourglass silhouette and a very feminine look with full skirts and a defined waist. This was a definite change from the 1940s war era and the remnants of dress from that time.

I don’t think it has to do with vintage, it’s generational wearing hair curlers. My Gram grew up in the 40’s and she and her sisters rolled their hair every night b4 bed and she did it with my hair and I’m in my 20’s of course I don’t wear hard curlers only soft lol

I only shampoo once a week, but I rinse and condition daily or every other day because I have dry coarse, curly hair. .

Hello - Actually she said two drops of Chanel No.5. One of our Miss South Africa's also stated this, but Marilyn in fact meant one under each ear. Thank you.
