SA Wheelbuilding tips: www.sturmey-arc...
Wait, is this finally part 2?!
I’ve left you all hanging for a while with this, haven’t I? It’s worth the wait though - I think this is one of the best looking bikes I’ve built. It’s gorgeous and it’s so comfy to ride. The reach is just perfect with the short stem and lauterwasser bars.
The only real big things I had to do here was build the wheels. I’ve only ever built a few sets so I’m still learning and improving each time. The rear was a simple build. It’s laced in 3 cross pattern with new spokes and actually went together really well, so much so, it was near perfectly true after I built it up. The front on the other hand was a huge pain. I’d calculated spokes for 3 cross and tried to build it like a normal wheel but the spokes on the small flange with the slotted holes kept on falling out. I managed to find an old Raleigh guide that really helped. According to the guide you lace the large flange first (but in a specific orientation depending on the amount of crosses and rim orientation - I was one hole out originally) and then the small flange. They also recommended using a peg to stop the spokes falling out so I used bluetack and it worked! Amazing. This wheel needed a bit more tweaking to get it centred but it’s running strong and true now.
The rest of the build was finishing installing the cables, chain etc and a couple of small tweaks.
I’m super happy with how it came out. Sleak and stylish. Hope you like it too!

Best build to date. Would love to cruise around on that thing. Those cork grips sanded down really well, I wasn't a fan of them at first, but they seemed to come really good. Outstanding build, well done.

Love the cream tires. Black paint is so good looking. Fixed gearing is so demanding, though, I've sworn them off. I love to freewheel. Excellent job of rebuilding. Beautiful.

This looks great Mark..... The tyres finish the bike off really nicely. When the build is a pain I.e front wheel, it would be helpful to know how it was resolved (or not!). Look forward to seeing your next restoration.

Thank you! Front wheel was resolved and I have to rebuild a wheelset soon using the same hub so I can go through then what my problem was and how I solved it.

Looks awesome! I'm gonna have to get some lauterwassers for my Dunelt. The cream Schwalbes are perfect. The only think I'd change is to put a pump in between those pump pegs 😋
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 6 лет назад
I’m trying to find the ‘right’ pump. Something that will suit the style. Ideally a brushed alloy one I think. (Also one that’s not a crazy eBay price!) I have just realised I’ve got an old leather tool bag that I can strap to the saddle though!

Beautiful refurbishment. My dad put a Hercules chain ring on a 24" wheel bike he built up for me in the 70s. I think he got the frame, Dawes if I recall correctly, at the tip!

Congrats on that rebuild. Ive done few restoration on british classics before and I have always admired the quality of the earlier bikes. Ive never thought of that Clamp with a screw that you used on the brakewire to anker it on the caliper, brilliant idé
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 6 лет назад
Thanks Tony. It seems to be holding up well. I did look in to having new cables custom made but the place I got a quote from wanted something like £30 for it to be done. That solderless nipple is a lot cheaper and easier.
@born7thjuly
@born7thjuly 6 лет назад
I used to own a Raleigh super sports 1948 a while ago. Unfortnetly the cable snapped when I was braking. If I was to know about the solderless nipple, I would have fitted that onto a new innerwire and then to use the original outer brake housing. It can be costly to try and find original parts! Anyways, happy to learn about something new within bike restoring👍

I'm jealous. I have a Raleigh Superbe in the process of rebuilding. Everything is done except the 3 speed Sturmey Archer. I've watch how to's and it looks like it's quite a bit of a challenge.
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 6 лет назад
I think the biggest challenge can be getting the lock ring undone to remove the whole internal unit from the body. Once it's out just take your time and have an organised area.

So inspiring! I've just bought a vintage bike and been looking everywhere for a decent light that isn't a modern torch style light. Where did you get your front light from? I love it!
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 5 лет назад
Thank you. I'm not sure I'd call it a decent light, it's quite dim! It was from eBay and I think I just searched for "Vintage Bike Light". £4 brand new. So cheap.

Errrrrrrr….. I found them on eBay under "solderless nipple / cable stop" Easiest way to use those old calipers that don't have a cable clamp.

Hey man! Great bike! Im probably pushing it expecting a reply but i could use your opinion. Im restoring an old BSA military bike. Though someone has painted over the original paint with hammerite and silver over the chromr so through the process of stripping of the paint ive found the chrome and paint is rusted. However ive got it back to bare metal and im now of two minds about painting it! Part of me wants to put it back to original, the other part wants to lacquer it with the baremetal and doing some warplane style graphics. Also how do i tell what kind of cotter pins to buy. The originals were ruined due to the rust. Also all the chrome has rust spots and is in bad shape so it would cost alot to repair! I can send photos if you like sir. Cheers!
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 6 лет назад
I always try and reply. It just so happens I’m on my phone as this notification came through 😅 BSA ‘Parabike’ by any chance? If so, I’m very envious! If there’s no original paint left then sure, bare metal, war plane graphics and a good cost of lacquer would look great I think. Cotter pins will just be a ‘standard’ size I believe. The only troublesome ones are ‘continental’ if memory serves me right as they’re slightly smaller. Normally found on French bikes though.

MonkeyShred what are the odds!! Its an Irish Army Bike from what i can tell. It was the only bike that matched from the photos i could find. Its 1942 from what i understand. Based on the green paint that was under the blue hammerite. I wish it was a parabike lol! I would definately put it back to original then! Cheers for the swift response sir!
