Startup, ride away and return of my 1955 Ariel Square 4 Mk2. This is a 1000cc 4 cylinder bike that weighs 450 lbs. and produces 40 hp. The pistons are arranged in a square with 2 gear coupled crankshafts. This is a vintage British bike that was built from 1931 to 1959. The bike has been in storage for 15 years. After an oil change, fresh fuel and a new battery, the bike fires right up and runs great. The engineering that went into this bike 65 years ago is incredible.

Mine was a 54' square. Bought as is and not running. I restored it from the ground up. I wouldn't categorise the engineering as incredible but rather, haphazardly attaching two twins together with a couple of noisy gears. They did make some changes in the later models, improving the oil pump for example, as the engine would overheat, lose pressure and well, need I say more? I was attracted to it's looks back in the 80's, still am.

When I was 16 in 1965 I went shopping for my first street bike and one of the bikes I looked at and road was a 4 Square but I couldn’t swing the $500 so I settled on a 1947 knuckle head the same year I was born for $250! 😂

I always thought it sounded like a combine harvester. The coupling gears between the cranks made a pretty cool sound.

Yessir, it had BSA lower forks and the 190mm. It really helped slow the bike down.
