It's great to have the Triumph T110 back up on the motorcycle lift after such a long time.
In this video, I will be fitting a brand new Amal 376/40 Monobloc carburetor from Burlen / Amal in the UK.
Buy me a coffee? ☕ 😉

It's great that Amal still makes these carbs for our bikes. I recently helped a friend put a new monobloc on his 57 Trophy. The bike wasn't running great on the old carb, but with the new one it started right up and ran like a champ.

Had to charge the carburetor on my 1969 tr-6r 650 . The guy at the shop said it was bad idle to high. Put the new one in same problem ! The asshole made the cable to short !! I was only sixteen learned my lesson well . Brought the bike from my next door neighbor for $175.00 Had to do top end. Nice first bike. 74 cab 750 ,1978 Ducati 900 gets, 1980 motoguzzi sp 1000 Fun days . 🏍

Answered all my questions (main one was 'does it really need a choke?') I'm road-readying an extremely used B40, and about the only thing I spent real money on was the carb. It had a different Amal to stock and being an SS90 it made sense to go with the monobloc, but what really clinched it was the state of the fuel tank. It took rust remover, acetone, petrol and big bolts, lots of shaking and three sessions of electrolysis before it was fit for use.

Excellent video! Thanks Mike! Sounds great with the new carb! I had dual amal concentrics on my Norton MK2 which I'd built some confidence adjusting. When I got my 53 Triumph 6T it had dual amals as well and I didn't think that much about it. Once I got it on the road I spent a long time futzing with them and just couldn't get the right balance. After struggling with jets etc I went back and forth with Ace with questions about how they should be jetted. The patient Ace guys kept replying with increasingly strong statements that the RIGHT carb for the bike was the 276 pre-mono... Finally I listened and went back to a new original one. Its run soooo much better ever since. Lesson learned - I'd spent more time and money trying to get the wrong carb right then just trusting the original engineering and getting the right carb on the bike. Thanks for sharing your experience here!

When Burlen/Amal released their premier concentrics,I wasted no time,fitting a pair to my Royal Enfield.I also did away with the choke. No more fiddling,set it and done.Perfect idle now! Mike,would you consider doing a tutorial on making and or modifying control cables, so as to optimize the length,to suit any particular machine? I really enjoy your videos.

Thanks very much Billy. I did a cable video recently for the Vincent. I've included a link to the video below and hope it will be helpful. It was a pretty fiddly job, but it worked out okay in the end. Looking back, I'm glad that I did it, but there is a lot to be said for buying standard off-the-shelf cables that are made by the professionals. Or alternatively, have the professionals make your custom cables to order. Best wishes, Mike. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kB5Y3nIcGZw.html

I've worked on Amal carbs a good bit, never seen a new one fitted. That was nice, good to hear it fire right up and just need a bit of fiddling. That bike really sounds good. Thanks! I used to have a 64 TR6R, and in my experience, the single carb was always much easier to keep exactly right. I was riding with a couple guys with two carbs and enough wear they had to fiddle with them during rides. We couldn't afford "new carbs" back then, fifty years ago. Thanks for sharing this.

I overhauled the Concentrics on my 73 Tiger 750 and 72 Daytona. They were better, and usable, but after a few thousand miles bought new Amal Premiers, pre-jetted from Burlen. Perfect. Tickover and pickup is fine, WOT fine. Not cheap, but you know that new carbs just work and if there's still a problem, it's most likely not the carbs.

Excellent, well explained video, thanks for sharing. Recently got a ‘78 Meriden Tiger 750 and I’m darned if it can get the carb right. I put it down to being my first Triumph and not being familiar with the Amal! I’ve heard some guys use a Mikuni substitute - is that a road worth going down but I must say, that new Amal looked nice.
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage 3 года назад
Hi Nigel, thanks very much for your comment. Yes, a lot of the guys have the Mikuni carburetors on their Nortons in the club and they are undoubtedly great. They definitely hold a better idle, but I must say I still love the original AMAL carburetors.

Hi John, great to hear about your carburetor. I'll try and go back over my notes, but I think that I fitted a K & N filter in the original airbox. I have the old filter element, but it was pretty scruffy looking and so I decided to go with a new filter element instead. I'll try and find which one I used. I think I just found one that would fit. Cheers, Mike

Hi Nigel, thanks a lot. Yes, that new carb made a big difference. There's no particular reason for not fitting the choke. The bike didn't come with a choke when I got it. I did think about fitting one per the standard setup but thought I would see how it works without. It seems to work great. We also have pretty moderate temperatures here in Oregon, so I haven't added it and it's also one less thing to worry about 😉. I hope all is well and you have a great new year. Cheers, Mike

Are the new Amals made from an aluminum alloy, or have they retained the zinc-based alloy Zamak?
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage 3 года назад
I'm not sure but their website states the following: The new carburettor incorporates changes in materials which reduces the rate of slide and body wear and a precision engineered idle circuit. This improves the pick-up performance from idle and reduces fuel consumption. The precision manufactured forged alloy, Hard Anodised Throttle Slide has a low friction surface for smoother operation and greater wear resistance. The ethanol resistant, puncture proof StayUp® Float and Viton tipped alloy Needle Valve improve control of the fuel flow. amalcarb.co.uk/?___store=amal

Hi Colin. The standard bike would've come with a choke, but mine never did. I've always felt like it didn't need it once it's flooded on the first start of the day on a cold morning. After that it starts just great. It's just a personal preference. I actually have chokes on most of my other bikes. Cheers, Mike
