I have a couple hundred photos my parents took, Sebring 54-58. They did 53-58 from NY caravaning with a dozen cars, eating/drinking on the side of the road, sleeping in the orange groves. J D Iglehart told me stories, great family friend.
If I remember correctly, Fangio left the track rather early after the race, which confused others at the victory celebrations. It turns out the heatproofing at the cockpit failed during his stint, and his right leg had been burnt by the heat that came from one of the exhaust pipes, and he left early to seek medical attention.
I bought one at the first SCCA regional I attended in Vidalia, GA in 1967. Still had it. Bobby Rahal’s uncle, Ed Rahal, ran his D-Type and finished second twice to a Shelby 350 GT.
The Reventlow 2 liter 200si Maserati (#4505) DNF 27 Lance Reventlow/William Pollack Maserati 200SI Lance Reventlow 88 engine Sports 2000 got left at Port Tampa Minus it's blown engine and gearbox. It would get a 1959 250S engine from the Scuderia Centro-Sud Cooper Maserati One sees parked beside the warehouse straight at that years US GP.... It's broken Cooper/Citroen transaxle put it out... A pre-war non-synchro Maserati 5 speed was found in a local Indy/Sprint car shop... And fitted to the 250S engine.... 1970 I was called to take the car out to our Eight Mile Dead End (SR-579) By Bay Autos owner Jack Sheppard..... A one time Sebring Lotus 9 driver... S.E. Lotus importer dealer... And De-coke it.... on the strength of knowing crash boxes from childhood My Dad's old pick-ups. The mechanics there had too many points on their licenses... From runs down our Bay Shore Blvd. (-8D My $50 '56 VW Beetle non-synched First gear proving this to ALL when I came screaming in after down shifting.... a short cut thru the corner gas station! Missing some approaching traffic! I got $15 for my efforts... this was 1970... and timed myself at 143 mph, through two runs of well marked FLYING quarter mile.... Cattle and citrus country... no civilians... Everyone did that run.... No drag racing, dragsters, etc..only licensed cars But with Troopers, Deputies and Police ALL out tuning their cars... Hanging out a the AMOCO station for USF students... And a few drone engined auto-gyro flyers were tolerated... a SAFE place to fly them... It would be as fast as I ever got up to.... Even in a $1000 w/trailer Formula C Quantum / 1000cc DKW a few years later, in testing that car.. Ft. Lauderdale airport taxi ways... The Oil Embargo ended that dream...... And my Florida Racing News tech editors position... Despite help generous from Andy G. and STP... ( God Bless Mr.500! Helluva guy! ) And Pop from Eastern Airlines, the cars owner and builder... our best and sometimes only advertisers.. Damned ARABS! Even Mario was worried Andy shut down his TEAM!
