Hey Merlin, The Fab Rat is building his Super Truck, he said he wanted to race you, but knew you were getting to old and feeble to keep up with him. He’s putting his together using brail because nobody in his shop can read, they just look at pictures.

My first car was a '58 Fairlane 4 door, white over blue. Loved that car and so did all my friends. My Dad was a total Ford man. He drove a Ford big truck and delivered new Fords from about mid 50's to 1972 when he retired. Seeing that car makes my heart race. My Dad had the most beautiful 2 door '57 hardtop, coal black, 312 cubic inch. Black and white interior, a dream car.

Greetings from Germany... That's a pretty good look'en '57' Ford Farilane. My first car was a 57 Ford Wagon so this brings back some good and fun memories. It had a 292 two speed automatic. This was summer of '67' I was all of 17 years old at the time. I spent that summer working a split shift 12 on 12 off at a local dairy farm to pay off the loan... all of 200 Bucks! Loads of fun in that old wagon, dragg'en the town's main street, drive-in movies camping in the mountains and some memorable Rabbit hunting adventures. I still recall the day my dad and I installed Over Head rocker arm oilers. Them old 'Y' block motors were known for running dry lifters. If I remember correctly a T-fitting on the oil pressure sensor at the block and copper tubing to either side of heads. The tubing was run under the valve covers at the front. The Valve covers were bent out of shape to allow for the tube. Not sure what dad did to keep it from leaking but I do not recall any leaks. Man I thought I had a dragster... LoL Put it in Drive, floor it as I dropped it in low. Heck it would not even get a squeak out of the tires and some how the transmission did survive. Never the less the Radio could pick-up KOMA out of Oklahoma City after 6 PM and that was what really counted... 😉Yep, fond memories of my '57' Ford Wagon.

When I was 18, a friend bought a 57 Fairlane Convertible sight unseen, about 30 miles south of London, England. He asked me to collect it for him. Never driven in London before, or a left hooker. It broke down and I spent the night on a camp bed at a stranger's flat. Worked in the morning, so I drove across London in the rush hour. Broke down again on the highway, and a roadside assistance guy stopped, adjusted the generator belt and charged the battery for me for free. The problem was the seller had bolted the coil to one of the heads, and it overheated. Eventually got it home about 130 miles in 24 hours, then the distributor shaft snapped. Once it was fixed (one cardboard head gasket replaced!) it was a great chick magnet. That was 54 years ago.

Dude I just mailed a check for a 1954 Ford Customline that has been sitting in a shed for ? years. It has the original engine and it turns over by hand, all the glass and chrome. It’s a V-8 Y block. Very little damage to the paint and the interior looks to just need a good cleaning. I’m planning to leave it all original and just cruise around farm country. So what I’ve found so far is that it’s a 6 volt positive ground system that I might switch over to 12 volt negative ground. When I was a kid we had a 1954 station wagon with the Thunderbird engine. That’s why I just had to have the Customline and they have a title.

My dad used to build a lot of them 312s for stock car racing. He would bore it out and use 327 chevy pistons. He had to shave a little off the top of the rods to make a little room on the pin boss. The 144 and 170 falcon push rods would fit and they were hollow and that helped with valve float!

The Ford Y block was one of the better OHV V8's of all time. Short of doing something utterly stupid the things were all but indestructible. But they were pokey. Plenty of torque, just took a while to get there. We had one years ago, a 332 in a '63 F750 that we used as our log truck. I knew the guy I bought it from, he was the second owner. I also knew the guy I sold it to. Some years after he bought the truck (and used it daily) he told me he had to rebuild the engine. I was kinda shocked at first but I guess that's what you have to do when the thing has 350K miles on it. I wouldn't trade a y block for every SBC in existence.

We use to apply a very flexible roof sealant like sno-coat to the underside of our campers & trailers to not only seal but reflect heat a little since it was white. I now spray on Lizzard skin to reflect heat & sound deadening on the bottom of our truck builds, firewalls, floors inside ect. It make a huge difference in comfort but not cheap. Amazon brand sound deadening mats seem promising & cheaper. The added insulation in the trailer will make a nice improvement to comfort for sleeping out on summer nights. Always wanted to figure out a way to put lines in the floor like we do for our homes. Pull up to a stream & pump cold water through the floors & anywhere else like the cooler storage area ect to drop the temperature inside... our campers seemed to be extreamly warm inside & the AC was working hard to keep up. I use to put old quilts on the top of my large aluminum horse trailers & then wet them down good to help keep it cooler at shows. When we had water available at the fairs... I used those flat roll sprinkler hose down the center of our living qts horse trailer... boy what a difference that made!

This video brought back memories. First that 312 Ford ‘Thunderbird’ engine, never a powerhouse. I had the same block in my 1936 Chevrolet pickup with the big two speed automatic transmission. Even though the truck weighed very little it had a real hard time getting out of its own way. Started with the two barrel carb, changed to the four barrel autolite shown here, traded that for a Holley dual pumper with a brief stop with three two barrel Stombergs. Added headers and a cam. Upgrades did very little to improve performance. Getting fuel into this engine or exhaust out wasn’t the reason it didn’t produce much power. It really needed more air. Added overhead oilers to solve the dry rocker problem. Now wish I still had that truck. Also as a kid we grew up in Yuma and my parents had a trailer perched atop a knoll overlooking the Colorado river in a place called Martinez Lake. Just a wide spot in the river as I remember it. Fun times fishing for crappie and swimming in the river. The ride out from Yuma was fun too. Up and down the hills like our own rollercoaster.
