Sent my 1957 Gibson LG-1 off to Baxendale Guitar in Athens, GA to have the ladder bracing converted to x-bracing. They took the back off the guitar, removed the neck, removed all the original ladder bracing. They cleaned the interior of the guitar, cleaning up an amateurish glue job that someone had tried on the loose back braces. They put on a new bridge, reset and refretted the neck, put on a new bone nut and set a perfect action. I'm just incredibly happy with the result. I took a little time and recorded the guitar a little bit. I'm using very good conversion (Antelope) and an absolutely great condenser that I use for most acoustic stringed instruments in my studio, a JJ Audio modified Oktava MK012 straight into Pro Tools 12. Theres no compression and no eq.

We love remanufacturing these into new vintage world class acoustic guitars. The whole process is $1000 on your Gibson and $975 on your Kay or Harmony.

Wow for a LG-1 that’s magic. I’m getting a 1950 and will totally look at getting the X bracing instead of the ladder.

I just finished X bracing my 1968 spruce topped LGO. I’m making a nut then can string it up. I hope mine sounds half as good. Also wish I could play half as you. Great video and you are so talented!

That is a wonderful transformation! I've been inspired by Scott's work lately and just completed a conversion and restoration of an early 60s LG-0 for a client. The old ladder bracing had failed resulting a big belly behind the bridge. That took lots of patience to get back to the original radius. I opted for bracing it forward-shifted tapered instead of scalloped. It really pops now! Lots more in the hopper including several Harmony and Kay flat tops. It is really fun bringing these old guitars back to life.

I have a 1947 Gibson LG-2 and absolutely love it and LG-2s in general. LG-1s are beautiful guitars, but due to their ladder bracing, don't sound as nice as LG-2s, IMHO. The transformation of this beautiful LG-1 is fascinating. It sounds wonderful and is now in the hands of a very talented player and singer who truly appreciates what she has with this guitar. What a great video on so many levels.

Great sound and your a very talented player. I wish you would talk to my wife about owning a large stable of acoustics as she thinks I’m overkill for owning 7 of my dream acoustics. Every acoustic has its own unique voice, some really mesmerizing and others not so but I’m always looking to find, rescue or happen upon a diamond in the rough! Good video thanks for sharing!

I have a 1951 LG-1 in very good condition that I love as is but there's this little voice in my head that keeps telling me that a conversion will make it that much better. It's still quite playable as is but the saddle is sanded down to about as far as it can go so a neck reset is coming relatively soon, and in my view that would be a good time to consider the conversion.
@elisasound
@elisasound 6 лет назад
If what you want is to play the guitar, then get the conversion. They will reset the neck and fix the saddle along with putting their proprietary bracing in. The guitar I have is just exceptional. I just had another guitar done, an early 60's Harmony H162. Incredible guitar now.

Glad to hear about your new Harmony conversion success. No matter how hard I've worked to convince myself that the conversion is worth it, I just couldn't get myself to take the step. I figure after all I have 12 acoustics including 5 Martins and all are X-braced. Then I ran across a 1950 LG-1 in very good condition, and since they're both of the same vintage I can now convert the one of the two I like the least and not suffer buyer's remorse.

That glue was not from the factory. Notice how it was running to the end block of the guitar....that is a DIYer trying to reglue a brace with their hand through the soundhole.

Yours has a sticker. Is it from the repair man? Mine and all I've seen on RU-vid do not have stickers. I have a 1964. Same pick guard. Did he put a new bridge and bridge plate on. My LG 1 originally had a plastic bridge that pulled up and warped the top, due to the ladder bracing. The finish, except back is nicer, mine was left out in freezing Michigan weather, caused the finish to crack. Nice to hear someone who plays better than I do, play "my" guitar.

The Lg-1s don’t have a sticker, just a stamp. The sticker is from the luthier, most likely. Great guitars. I’ve got a 66 myself :)

Hi Elisa, I just acquired a 1962 LG-1 and after seeing this video, will consider getting this done . I think its a good idea from a players viewpoint but if you want to resell down the road, it might be better to leave it as is . With that being said , you got a great sounding guitar . Are you using phosphor bronze strings lights, just curious?

Why swap out the ladder bracing? It’s sounds more classically bluesy. You could have just bought an lg-2

What an upgrade-these are not the most dynamic with original bracing and NOW.....its popping not-everynote just jumps out of the guitar. Makes me want to X brace an old harmony.

Don’t change sth unique to a common Allrounder which just makes you happy playing chords on it . An lg1 wants your attention and concentration and will give you lot of mojo and beauty if you succeed!

Elisa. I just got my LG-1 conversion back from Baxendale...what a great job they did!!! Curious what strings you've found work best on yours. I have the Santa Cruz low tensions on there now...the trebles are super, but I'm not sure about the bass response. They worked miracles on my other standard LG-1.

Of course we did not get to hear this guitar prior to the open heart surgery. Some Gibsons were dogs and could benefit from a modification. I have a 1929 Stromberg-Voisinet ladder braced guitar and would never consider a "conversion"... too good the way it is. 12 frets and a V neck with decalcomania adirondack top.

I can go to Target and buy a brand new and guaranteed guitar for $100, probably less. It will play poorly and sound dull to my ears. Or I can buy a reasonably priced classic Martin, maybe prewar, for $5 to $8,000 or more, then probably spend 1 or 2 thousand to put it in good shape. Or I can buy an older guitar made from good wood and have it updated and gone through and it will play great and sound great. Will that guitar be as good as the prewar Martin? Probably not, but it will be very good with rich sound and not need work for years and the cost will be a fraction of the Martin.
