Holy cow, Batman. I never knew Buick made a station wagon, and I'm pretty savvy on 50s-70s cars. This thing is beautiful. Makes a Chevy Nomad seem like a CrackerJack toy.

Wow, I guess you like Joe's jewel!!!! Buick started selling wagons in 1938, but they were custom orders. The first Buick production wagon started in 1940. 495 were sold. Since then, Buick was in the wagon business for decades to come. Buick is, so far, the last to offer a station wagon by an American brand, in the US. The Regal Tour X was discontinued in 2020. @@carshowreporter Not an understatement though! All respect to those who now admire them, the '58 Buick styling was the most over the top in a year when GM's styling went to excess. Basically good lines covered up by all that unnecessary chrome.

I go to many shows every weekend so I need to try to stay as safe as possible because many people do not believe in helping defeat this scourge. I also encounter many veterans, a number of them have endured compromised health while keeping us free. It would be a gross dishonor to infect even one of these brave and patriotic souls and, if a mask helps even a little bit, it is my duty to to my part to help our heroes.

I absolutely LOVE these cars. I was privileged to be able to drive one of these while in high school. Ours was a '58 Buick Special, four door. It wasn't fast off the line, so to speak, but once it got rolling it was as smooth operating as any car made back then and would run at highway speeds all day long with no problems. To find one in decent condition now is becoming harder and harder because restorers and collectors just tend to overlook just how magnificent these cars really are.

Our family had one, dad bought it used, as soon as he spotted it, had to have it. We had 2 Buick special sedans before, that broke down. Ours was a light blue, all trim intact. Speedo was unique, a scrolling bar that rotated instead of traditional needle bar, those gunsight front medallions on fenders , and that huge tailgate. Helped dad bleed brakes and honk the horn when he was under the hood doing maintenance with the usual G- Damnit response. Fond memories.

1958........Beautiful station wagons, Interstate Highway system being built, gas was .25 cents a gallon and America was much less homogeneous. What a time it was to travel the states !

The only thing I remember about the mechanicals was the poor " slim jim " transmission, but that was a few years away. The build quality of so many manufacturers were, shall we say, not up to today's standards. Could you imagine a throw back design with a big, broad, chrome smile?? !!!! Remember, though, even the great Earl's designs " calmed " down for '61, the last designs released under his direction. Harley had retired in '58 while the '61's were being developed.

People didn't really care about reliability, they for the most part bought a new car every 4-5 years and fixed what was needed to be fixed in between, you could do that then, what was of most concern was Looks, and performance, who had the biggest car, engine and could carry the most people, safety, reliability, to some extent cost, and fuel mileage, were the least of most peoples concerns then.

Those cars were far more reliable than you might think. They needed service more frequently because they lacked modern materials that we take for granted now a days, and they tended not to last as long because oils and other products were not as good as what we have today. Build quality didn't drop until about fifteen years later.

@@discerningmind Add to it the fact that oil and fuel filters were relatively new as standard equipment. Points and condensers never lasted over 15,000 miles. Most of the time we changed them before 10k. The coil produced between 15k and 20k volts which did not clean the plugs very well..... then there is the carb!

@@discerningmind Agree, the late 60’s and 70’s rusted in two to three years, unless you went and got it “rust-proofed.” Detroit’s standards were horrible and they wanted people to buy again in two years. My dad had a ‘73 Buick Century that was totally rusted out by 1977.

My Cub Scout den mother had a green one back in mid-60's...I remember riding in the back and looking out the open tailgate window at those imposing taillights. I have long predicted the entire 1958 GM line to take off in value at some near point cause they are just so unique in style performance luxury and detail. Any evidence needed?...just look at this wagon. I own a '58 Fleetwood and along with that, my fav 58's are the Bonneville and the Buick/Olds wagons, so am over the moon with this wagon, but any '58 GM is just amazing.

I agree with you, Steve. Finally, the rest of the world woke up to the fifty's glamor girls which is the '58 GM line. Base price was $3831 with automatic transmission as standard equipment. We had one. Dad bought it around 1969 from a co-worker. It had been maintained impeccably. One day some guy hit it on the front left fender. It was still driveable but there was a vaccum pump for the brakes at the impact site so the brakes wouldn't work. The insurance company junked it. We use to see it at the junk yard piled high enough so it showed over the fence. We loved that car.

These were priced in the upper ranges of the middle class range. What a shame your Dad's car had such an undignified end. These glorious wagons have only recently become quite collectable. As usual, to late to save many of these family memory making machines.

Beautiful car along with it's cousin the Olds Fiesta. The dashboards in those cars from that era are beautiful. An unusual option for this car was a pullout radio that you could take with you and actually listen to. I was hoping to get a close-up shot to see if this one had it. Oh well no biggie. Nice video!

I watched the complete video of the "58 Olds Fiesta wagon. These top of the line, '58 GM's were in a class by themselves!!! The Trans Portable radio is an innovative feature only available on the Olds, not the Buick. ( this is the site which I base this on: www.hometownbuick.com/1958-buick-radio/ ) . In 1959, Buick offered this advanced feature. Olds was usually the technology test bed of GM. Thanks for sharing the video, Art.

Wagons were the pride of the family in their prime, then were either sold to tradesmen or driven into the ground and junked. OMG. The gravedigger's shovels on the flanks. I know; I dug graves one summer in college. An amazing car that helped Harley Earl retire. I was just thinking about the 1958 DeSoto Fireflite wagon, and how much cleaner its styling was. There wasn't a large market for luxury station wagons, but this was a definite contender.

Exner's Forward Look put Earl on notice. He scrapped the original, 1959 designs, which were the '58's on steriods, and cleaned up his lines. Every luxury marque had a wagon, except Cadillac. @@carshowreporter GM had a mandatory retirement age of 65, which Harley was. However. If anyone could have powered through that, it was Harley Earl, but his troops mutinied, led by Bill Mitchell. Don't really know how Harley felt about it all. Confession might be good for the soul, but for corporate titans in 1959 it was not an option.

I found a few Buicks in the wild one-day including one of these wagons. It had all the trim on it including all those little squares up front grill. Leave that the Cadillac sitting with it had a very similar grill as well. There was two maybe three sedans I don't remember if there were two doors or four doors. You're 500 cars from 1938 to about 1978. Ton of rattlesnakes and a couple of cougars. They did not have tires but they had big teeth and claws . GTS there as well. 1971 ish. In any case for being out in the wild for twenty-five or so years they look pretty good. But this car here that you've shown us looks better than new!

That " yard " sound like the southwest. I hope you took lots of photos!! The cougars sound cool, as, for the most part, they stay away, but the rattlesnakes?? One would really need those parts .... Is the yard still there?? Most restorations make the cars better than new, as the build quality of 70's and earlier cars were not, shall we say, up to today's standards! Ah, the traveling endless summer miles in the old station wagon, stopping at HOJO's, Dad hollering, "Don't go in there and try to take the place over"!, opening of the door, the cool air conditioning hitting you in the face along with a wisp of ciggarette smoke, sitting at the counter ordering nice bowl of orange sherbert. My father hated station wagons, so I didn't get to ride in one until a neighbor took us kids in their late '60s Chevy. I was smitten then and have owned several, including an '87 Caprice, '81 Custom Cruiser, '96 Roadmaster -- and finally a '97 Volvo 850GLT Estate. They are usually the best looking and most versatile. They also tend to have a firmer ride. But they can be rare survivors, because typically they get beat to hell.

You had some great wagons!! The Volvo is a very surprising wagon!! They are so roomy in a smaller package and have fantastic seats! Wagons were ignored by the collector market for so long. Only now have a few discovered just how cool they are. Like you said, though, the few survivors have been beat to hell!! Check out all of my other wagon videos. @@carshowreporter Most people don't even know 58 Buicks exist , when they see one it's What the hell is that? . I rescued a 4dr Special a few years ago, it's a good straight solid and complete car but no back glass. Can't find one, only 58 Buick and Olds 4dr sedan works. Maybe someday, I know they aren't worth much but they are still cool.

Pam, Thank you for this video of a spectacular car. In my deepest respect I offer that your reference of double-bullets at 1:01 are commonly referred to as Gun-Sights. Unfortunately, I can't offer the correct name of these that would have been in documentation or in reference at the Buick in-house design department. In a fun note I have to say while enjoyabley engaged in your dialog I think we both would have loved a career in that department. God Bless.

Buick did not call them " gun sights " or " bomb sights " but, on a quick search, I could not find the official, Buick, name for the gun sights ( you are correct in using the common name ). Styling is personal taste. Remember, the '58 GM line was a 1 year offering. Even GM did not like it compared to the competition. The '58's have not been " discovered " by the collectors until the turn of this century ( Buick??!! Could not resist!! ). Had a chance to buy one for 300.00 in a little junk yard in the middle of nowhere in Massachusettes I was 15 and thought this was badass now knowing only 400 were made makes me feel I knew it was so spiecal then and is a styling icon even today those were the days of real machines why dont they dont make more like this with todays tech

Well, Larry, I beg to differ... the lead sled was a customized, or should I say, kustomized , pre early '40's - '54, American car. The ultimate being the '49 - '51 Merc. They were called lead sleds due to the lead used to fill in the holes from shaving, clean the wields from chopping and as well as any other body work. Bondo was still in the future. Meanwhile, you are spot on. Today, they are beautiful classics!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting, Larry. Caddies,buicks, Lincoln's, olds, etc. By the way I was born in 1944, and still messing with old cars, although I can't do much work on them anymore, I have owned 3 classic car lots, that being said, keep up the good work, Darlin.

Wow, Larry, you were there during the Olds Rocket, OHV V8 revolution, and, if one had the money, the Cadi OHV V8, backed by the LaSalle transmission and the growth of the go fast parts from Isky, Moon and Winfield to name just a few!!! @@carshowreporter Darlin, I wish I could answer that with just a few classic cars, my 60 Chevy low rider, 51 Chevy business coupe, 54 Chevy 2dr post, 55 Chevy 2 dr post, 57 Chevy, 58 Chevy, 62 SS, 64 SW, 65 Chevy, 69 impala low rider, 66 barracuda convertible, 65 barracuda , 72 challenger , 65 Ford XLT convertible, 63 Corvette, 53 Volkswagen van with slider top, 73 nova with slider top, so many I could go for hours, I turned my loved hobby into loved work, seriously those were the days..I just sold my 65 Chevelle, my 76 El Camino, 72 pinto, 78 dodge factory camper van, I still own a 77 Chevy C10 pu, I have a 91 Ford Ranger built by Centurion, only 87 of them ever made, life has been fun, it's a bitch getting old and not being able to mess with these classics anymore.

I had a 66 Plymouth Barracuda that in many ways was like a wagon other than the normal trunk lid. The way the back seat folded forward and the panel between the cargo area behind the backseat and the trunk unlatched and dropped flat into the truck with the huge bubble back window. It was truly the love car as the song suggested and a cool car too. Should have never sold it to my Brother in law who mistreated it badly.

Thank you for the 58 Buick, just one small nit-picky correction. The 58 Olds 98 Station Wagon was the top GM wagon back then. I'll give you that there was a paper thin division between the two, but things like an automatic headlight dimmer power seats, floor button channel changer for the radio, power tailgate window, and a limited slip differential put Oldsmobile above the Century.

I tried to find the information on a 98 Fiesta wagon to no avail, only an 88 and Super 88 Fiesta wagons. The MSRP of the Olds was about $3,400 while the Buick MSRP was $3,800. Hummmm Thanks for setting me on this interesting hunt,

@@carshowreporter I believe there were fewer than 500 made... Dad bought one for mom on their 16th wedding anniversary. She absolutely loved it. Interesting little aside on that car. Five years later, my parents sold that car for $750 more than they paid for it to a little old car collector on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. They replaced it with a 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible. It was white with a baby blue top and a red pleather interior. I flipped that one over on Rt I-287 just short of the Tappen Zee Bridge. damn shame.. Really fast car.

@@jewishman2687 About 4,500 1958 Caballeros were sold. That is a real nice anniversary present your Dad gave your Mom!!! He was lucky to find that collector, too! Wagons, even woodies, were not appreciated until the '70's with few exceptions, such as the Nomad. You are lucky you walked away from flipping that Olds!!!! They were not the best handling cars. Powerful, YES!!!!

God , that car gives me bad memories . When I was a kid , I was told to paint the roof of the molding shed in the lumber yard . Theyd just recovered it with used tin , that had nail holes in it . After I got through slopping 10 gallons of silver paint on the tin , I found out the carpenters wagon was parked under neath . It was just like that one , only white . There was no permanent damage , but I did get yelled at .

Pamela,, it’s hard to describe how good it was to grow up with the 50s and 60s cars. My younger brother were car nuts and we looked forward to the new designs which came out each fall. At the time American cars were the best in the world. They rode like magic carpets. They had personally and each make had its own look. But today’s cars are far superior. I now drive a Volvo XC90 and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. Thank you for the pleasant look back.

Ionia manufacturing company built the bodies for these and the Oldsmobile Fiesta wagons. ('57 and '58). The interior tailgate release handle is the exact same one that is used on my 1958 Cameo Carrier.

I had a friends whose mother's car was a 1958 Buick Limited with every option you could think of on it. My guess is that was the most expensive Buick in 1958.

The Limited was the top of the line by far!!! Base prices started a little north of $5,000!!!! The base price for the Caballero was a little over $3,800.

A rare car from that era. Most families did not want to spend that much money on a station wagon. Fords and Chevys dominated that field.

Very good observation Here. The base price of the Caballero was about $3,831, the Ford, 4 door wagon was $2,451 and the Chevy was $2,678 and the Rambler was $2,376. By the way, the low priced 3 were 6 cylinder cars. Also, there was a wicked recession in 1958.

@@carshowreporter The only people that I know of who regularly bought Buick wagons were people whose main car was a recent Cadillac. (The same applied to Oldsmobile wagons in two-car families) Although there were those who were hard-core Buick or Oldsmobile customers who bought the wagons-- If they had a family.

I personally never saw the Mercury as upscale from a Ford, more like an old stogey Ford. But my uncle, a lawyer would have disagreed. I am a Packard fan. But I do not own or work on any of these old cars.

Ford tried to emulate GM's " ladder to success ". 1958 Ford owners could climb from a Ford to an Edsel ( 2 models based off of the Ford and 2 based on the Merc ), then Mercury, Lincoln and " arrive with a Continental, which had returned to Lincoln in '58. By the by, Packard is one of my favorites. I have had the pleasure of driving a few.

It was one of the many times GM lead the styling trends and produced the pinnacle of the evolution. 1957 was one of the few times GM was upstaged, though, with Exner's '57 Forward Look designs. What do you think of the '59/'60 flat and sweeping look?

The first car I can remember was my parents Century it was a 1958. I was born in 1958 and they kept the car until the 1964 Wildcat came out and they bought one. Unfortunately my Dad had a wreck in it when it was almost a year old and it was totalled. He was alone when it happened. He had the same sort of accident as Jane Mansfield had. Insurance bought a 1965 Wildcat to replace it. The trailor that was left on a bridge with no lighting owners insurance paid for the new one.

@@carshowreporter yeah Janes car was traveling at like 80 or 90. My Dad said he was going 50 or 60. It still crushed the front end and my Dad was never a seatbelt wearer so my Mom spent many hours after the accident with tweezers getting glass particles out of my Dads forehead. He definitely was a Buick sale lol..

@@carshowreporter didn't know if you knew this or not. Janes driver was a 20 year old guy who worked at the club she just played at. The owner of the club had just bought that Buick Electra for his wife and she was totally pissed that the owner let the kid use it. It was brand new. The kid was supposed to drop off the crowd in the car and then drive back to the club.

@@philancell884 No body wore seat belts and few cars offered them except some of the finer, European, cars. American started getting belts in '63 but few people wore them. When did your Dad start using them?

Power was an option. But, many thought it maybe wasn't worth coughing up extra for it, just like air conditioning. Front end looks like a 1958 line of Chevys like Impala.

Good point Barry. Chevy seemed to mimic Cadillac from time to time. Remember the old trope, " just another thing to break " ?? This might have been a factory, as well as the extra fare. Thanks for commenting Dr.

From 1954 through 1964, Ionia Manufacturing Co. manufactured all 139,344 station wagon bodies sold by GM’s Buick division. Ionia supplied Oldsmobile with station wagon bodies beginning in 1957, producing 143,696 station wagon bodies through 1964. An interesting video of a bespoke U.S. auto manufacturer would be one about the Ionia Company.

The Ionia Manufacturing would be a very, interesting, documentary. The were so many body manufacturers, from Budd to Fisher, Iron Mountain to Ionia and many small, specialty manufacturers for both metal and wood. @@carshowreporter Yes! It's that there are many, many amazing back stories to the end products by all of the manufacturers, some models were astounding classics. One would assume that it's all done on one assembly line at on of the big manufactuerers, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Ionia also built the Lincoln Mark II, as well as the last of the Ford Shelby Mustangs. A friend owned a '68 Cougar that had a factory electric sunroof, and logistics on the way that sunroof got installed and then showed up at the dealer's as a factory option is a story unto itself
