@@loucostabile The “convertible coupe” name was popular then. My ‘59 Olds has the same description. Here’s a shot I took of a ‘57 DeSoto convertible at the former 57 Heaven Museum in Branson some years ago. flic.kr/p/83Bqwn Gorgeous model.
I really like this rakish look of '58 Chrysler products versus the chunkier and less attractive-to-my-eyes GM & Fords of that year. This DeSoto must be super rare. Beautifully optioned out and looking great, guys. Thanks for video.
Wow Lou.. just when I think you have found the most amazing survivor car in the world you go ahead and find another... I'm absolutely blown away by this one!
I rode in a '58 Firesweep convertible (November '65 at 9 y.o.) for sale at $300.00! I LUSTED FOR IT! Sadly, convertibles in the North do NOT sell well in cold weather!
I would wager not many people know Mopar also offered a 350-cid V-8....just as many don't realize Buick made a 340! Happy New year, Lou. Amazing DeSoto.
What a wonderful, original car. Still loving the whole mid-century design. The hood has more ornaments on it than my mum’s jewelry box! Thanks Lou for a great presentation.
Hi Matt Clark REALTOR Houston Galveston 65Cuda, Happy to read you appreciate the looks and rarity of this car :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Goodday Lou, 1958 the start of the dual headlights & this Desoto truly is impressive. It definitely would of been impressive back in 58 cruising this convertible around, listening to The King blaring through the speakers. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
Desoto really outdid themselves in '58. It's a beautiful car from any angle and this example is particularly impressive. It just scream "1950's". I like the rich red contrasting the ivory paint. I also like how Desoto tapered the trunk to further accentuate the height of the fins. It should be mentioned that an ultra-rare '58 Desoto would be one with the optional electronic fuel injection. A first in the industry. Very few were ordered and just about all of them were converted back to a conventional carburetor set-up. I know of only one authenticated example in existence today.
58 has to be my favorite year for cars, even the Desoto is a beautiful car. I had a 58 Sunliner and I've always wanted a 58 Impala drop top. Another great video of a great car Thanks Lou!!!
There's gotta be nuthin' better than a brand spanking almost new (kinda) 1958 Desoto Coup! It's a sweet vintage machine! A double thumbs-up, with no hesitation!
Thank you for having him put the top up. I loved my 1966 Impala convertible I had as a 17 yr old kid (used) bought in 1973, but always thought convertibles looked better with the top up! I enjoyed it down while driving it as did my girlfriend, but it sure looked better with it up... it was red with a white top. I have some nice pics that I keep in an album kind of hidden, my wife does not like seeing them as she was NOT the girlfriend in the pictures, and even at age 57 and 35 years of marriage, she still does not like seeing her in my car..🤣 Great video beautiful Desoto survivor.

Nice car. Love the big-finned forward look Mopars. The taillights are out of this world. I used to own a 57 Firesweep 4DHT and plan on getting another 57-58 Desoto. Probably either a Firedome or Fireflite. 4 door hardtops are my favorite on these.
Drive a DeSoto then decide! go the ads back then. Just looking at that work of automotive art would have me buying it right on the spot. Even back in the day you wouldn't have met yourself coming down the road considering the rarity. Really loved seeing this beautiful survivor.
I just subscribed! The reason my dad was considering buying the '58 DeSoto Firesweep convertible (November '65 $300!) was that we had a GREAT '50 DeSoto since 1959! I grew up with this car! I ADORED IT! THE BEST CAR DETROIT EVER PRODUCED (in my humble opinion!) These cars were LEGENDARY!
Welcome John to the Channel :-) I think you'll find LOTS of fun Finned cars. Here is a playlist for you to enjoy. studio.ru-vid.comPLkoIzmOYXcci5_poUdGutQMVJ-fK3-cB-/videos
@@loucostabile I owned $100 in 1972) a '58 Cadillac "Series 62" 4 dr. hdtp and HAD to buy (to get STOLEN taillight unit) a '58 Cadillac "Series 62" 2 door hdtp. for parts that was ORIGIONALLY OWNED by Robert Zimmerman-Hibbing, Minnesota! Sadly, I had to junk this car, but I have ALWAYS wondered about its' ORIGIONAL OWNER! (Perhaps Bob Dylan?!)
Wow Lou a 1958 Desoto! Can't get any better than that. I love anything from 1958 as that was my birth year. As I look at this great Desoto it just amazed me on how much it looks like a Chrysler. We had a 1958 Chrysler Saratoga and it had the hemi engine in it. And I just bet this Desoto has a hemi too as I do believe that was the same cubic inch engine we had in our Chrysler. Desoto cars always had great lines to them. I was disheartened when they ceased making them. Love the colors of this Desoto it really would have been different to see it with a redtop to match the body and interior color. I just love love those wire wheels really seats off that car.. Loved the owner and his excitement of his car. A great survivor means a lot when it is so original like it is! Lou another great great video and again thanks for sharing!!!
Hi Steve, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your Saratoga. My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
I love this car so much, I have a handful of 1:64 scale versions of it by M2 Machines. Such a great looking vehicle! I think this car has some of the cleanest and minimalist yet elegant lines of any finned car from the era. MOPAR or NOCAR!!!... As usual!
Distinctive! The Desoto Brand evokes memories of 50’s optimism for the future, the dash mounted rear view mirror is an odd solution, controls harken back to a simpler analog era. Perfect parade car! Nice find Lou! Happy New Year!
THAT is a beautiful. The Mopar 350 was the 1st of the B series engines, including the 361, 383, and 400 V8s. It is a 2 yr only engine. Routing the exhaust underneath, rather than through the bumper, saved that bumper. Smart move!
Hi, Lou! I must say, Greg is very fortunate to have found this one! DeSoto sure had great looking cars in 1958, with their sweeping tailfins and side trim. But that year was basically the beginning of the end for DeSoto. Not only was it a deep recession year that hit the middle-price market in which DeSoto competed especially hard, but Chrysler build quality had gone downhill and DeSoto was facing a lot of pricing pressure from Dodge and the Chrysler brand, and by 1961 it was gone for good. What's interesting about the Firesweep is that it was built with Dodge, mainly at the Dodge Main plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, and shared some details with Dodge, most notably the same standard engine, a shorter wheelbase, a shorter hood and the "unibrow" treatment above the headlights. Other DeSotos, the Firedome, Fireflite and Adventurer, were built at DeSoto's own plant in Detroit. Enjoy your new old pleasure cruiser, Greg, and Lou, ILL CYA L8R in the next one!
The 57-60 Chryslers were the peak of styling IMHO, but considering how bad the metal quality was on them, it's gotta be extremely rare for one of these Desotos to survive in this condition. The cars were such rust buckets back in the day that they started rusting out inside of 3 years.
Very, Very Unique n' Yes Very, Very Rare!!... Absolutely Gorgeous!!...Love The Fin Design!!.. Hoping She's A True Keeper For Ya Greg!!!- & Thanxs Once Again Lou ,For Another Great Video!!!
I forgot about the front end of the 58!!! I thought it looked like a four eyed frog, when I was a little kid. I love Chrysler's bastard stepchild brand. So cool to see one again. Thanks Lou!!!
Beautiful find Lou! I used to love the '59 DeSoto and that was it, nowadays....I can't decide between the '57, '58 OR '59! These days, I've to go eeny, meeny, miny, moe on them! On with the ride! Happy New Year....here's to a helluva lot better 2021! 🍻
The Ford Anglia 105E that came out in 1959 owes a lot of its styling cues to this Desoto. Miniaturised for a poverty stricken Britain but it’s the same shapes.

...oh, yeah, Lou...Greg just stumbled onto a real honey of an original Firesweep...those outrageous rear fins only looked taller because of the optics of that Firesweep side spear...and, believe it or not...these firesweeps shared the same frame and body shell of the Dodge Lancers, with modified grille-work and tail light assemblies...soo fitting that these were all produced at Chrysler's Maywood plant in Los Angeles...these would look sooo much at home cruising north on the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu and on north to Santa Barbara...total cruiser...wow...
In 1979 I had a 58 firesweep sportsman model. It was the same color in and out as this one but it was a 2 door hardtop. It had duel antennas on the back also a 361 with chrome valve covers and breather. I paid 150 dollars for it.

Fintastic DeSoto, Greg, nice 'automobile' to add to the VW stable. Looks even more beautiful with the top up. Chemical Guys makes a fantastic PH balanced wash, & spray on protectant. I used it on my 2013 Camaro convertible and the top looked brand new when I traded it in 5 yrs later, in Phx!
Dear Mirch Shake, I'm attracted to the Fins of the 1950's cars. The rarity of seeing them, the great designs are definitely a treat in my opinion to see, and to share with the Viewers, Lou
Another great car and review. These were great looking cars. I personally think it looks better with the top up, but then I have been a fan of Christine for years.(yes I know they are different) This must be Christines long lost cousin Maybeline. LOL. Thank for sharing, Lou.
My dad could have bought a '58 DeSoto Firesweep convertible for $300 in November '65! I FELL IN LUST with this GREAT CAR (9 y.o.!) I WISH I HAD $300.00!

After so much emphasis on the 1958 Plymouth Fury (Thanks to the great Stephen King), it's nice to see this DeSoto rarity! Enginewise, trim, and interior/instrument panel, this is sort of where Chrysler's Plymouth sibling had left off...The late 50s WAS Detroit during its prime!

Sorry Lou, suffered through about four minutes of the video, I couldn't take any more wind and other external noise. Have you thought about a foam cover for the microphone?
Hi Wesley, Mic is in and connected to the camera. On this video, well....you do what you can, with what you have, in the time you can do it, and this was the result. Hope you enjoy the next one, Lou
Hi Derek, Not sure how many were made. Based on where you live, you might want to attend an auction, or google search "Classic Car Dealers" in your area. Hope that helps, Lou
