Edsel Ford did not design this car, He died in 1943. It was given his name by the team that designed this car in the 1950s. The engine is a 361 with 400 foot pounds of torque is a FE, FE stands for Ford / Edsel. The larger displacement engines were the MEL engines.

@@spaceghost8995 It is defiantly a FE I have worked on them. A Y block has the distributer in the back of the engine. The FE line of engines came out in 1958 and were used in Edsel's, Fords and some Mercury's. The Edsel did have a Y block in some of them but the E400 is a FE. I spent 45 years in the automotive repair business and hold a Master certification in classic car repair.

@Sundancer268
@Sundancer268 3 года назад
With the old Ford Transmissions through 1964, Drive 1 was the gear selector to use. This allowed the transmission to start in first gear shifting to second and then third. Drive 2 started in second gear then shifting to third. Many people selected drive 2 when the shifter was on the column or floor and complained that the car was a dog. They selected drive 2 because it was the first position after neutral thinking this was normal. If you continued pulling the shifter, it would drop into Drive 1 without having to push a button on the floor shifter or pulling the column shifter towards the rear like you would have to do to place the transmission in low. I loved Drive 2 for winter driving as it helped in getting moving in the snow. In 65 Ford changed the transmission selector to the normal PRND21 as all other manufactures due to federal law. You still could start the Fords in 2nd gear unlike all the other manufactures which would start in 1sr even if 2 was selected.

My dad was just out of high school a couple of years when the Edsel came out. They called it the "yawning lemon" because of its grille. I believe the tall narrow grille might have contributed to the lack of air flow thru the radiator even though there were inlets on each side of the grille. The Edsel was supposed to be a ground breaking design by Ford to incorporate luxury with affordability and some argue to this day as to whether it's production failed because Ford spent more than a year hiping up this surprise new car or that it was just a performance and handling letdown. To further exacerbate things, dealers were at odds with the factory because cars were arriving at dealers not completely assembled with bumpers and trim in the trunk. The problem was Ford put these longer wheelbase cars on the same assembly line with their other production cars and factory workers couldn't get Edsels assembled in time as they scrambled to shuffle parts bins around, so they came to dealers incomplete. Ford was expecting dealer service departments to finish assembly and not be compensated by the factory. All these factors combined to make the Edsel an unpopular car and now very rare. Being a station wagon makes it even more rare. What a treat to see this on the road and hopefully the owner keeps it original. What a piece of history!

Henry Ford didn't like the Edsel I had read because his son had went behind his back to have the car developed & made . Henry was a smart man & had many close friends that were smart but he didn't like change & he was very controlling not trusting many including his son who was supposed to at one time take over the company but died which was a shame & I am sure it hurt Henry knowing how he treated his son by being over bearing & controlling every aspect of his son's life once his son died .

@@nickpanaritis4122 well that explains the smoke then. I can’t recall the cubic inches of the motor and I am pretty sure I saw the video where you talked about it, but this 71 yr old brain doesn’t recall like it use to. So I found myself wonder if it had a 312 or if Edsel had stepped up for a bigger motor. Thanks for taking the time and making the extra effort to produce your videos Nick. I’m sure it must add many hours to your already busy week.

Love or hate the styling on this old classic, it's different than the one style fits all of modern styling and deserves to stay on the road! And at Nick's Garage, it's at the right place. A car that is personalized like that is obviously loved by it's owner; enough to be sent to Nick's! Great episode, Nick's Garage!

NICK, When the Edsel came out my ol' man (may he rest in peace) said it looked t him as if Ford hung a toilet seat on the front of the Edsel. When I was in High School I came across a big Ford wagon, a Ranch Wagon as I recollect it was only a couple of years old it was being retired by the Ohio State dept of highways truck scale division. The wagon had a 428 with auto and was going for cheap. My interest in it was if we put down the back seat there was plenty of room for me & my girl. I also had a dirt bike, so I bought a '61 Chevy C10 panel truck. More headroom in the back & no windows for prying eyes. !

I heard many years ago the Edsels had transmission problems. The missing fan shroud is one main reasons the engine is overheating. It is needed to direct the cooler air over the engine properly. Loved the video. Keep it up.

Wow, being a wagon really makes this a rare vehicle. I remember seeing a few of these when they were new cars. It was big, had lots of room. Some folks made fun of the grille. Saying it looks like an Oldsmobile that sucked a lemon. A friend from school had a gorgeous black and yellow convertible Edsel in his senior year of school. He had been working in a grocer store since age 16 and saving his money. I guess he paid 60% cash and got a loan for the rest. He was the cool guy with a brand new car.

Technically speaking it was in production in 1957, 1958, and 1959 for the 1958 - 1960 model years. I believe they only produced the 1960 model until December of 1959, which is why there are so few of them out there.

Nice wagon! I loved cruising in my '56 Chevy wagon. I sold it in 2017. It had a rebuilt original 235 6cyl engine. I drove it daily and even 4 hour trips to the shore. It never ran hot. It shouldn't take an electric fan to keep these cars from overheating. These cars never needed an electric fan when new. If they're overheating, there is an underlying problem. Many times, the engine fan is too far from the radiator, meaning a missing fan spacer or fan shroud. Ignition timing, corroded/clogged cooling system, bad water pump, or bad thermostat are also culprits. An electric fan is just a bandaid on a real problem.

I want to say how much I love your channel. I was a Ford man in the 60s and 70s and built some race cars in the mid 60s. I have owned several Mopars beginning with a Shelby Dakota, the first V8 Dakota with a 318 in it. I currently own a Toyota Tundra and it has proven to be a great truck with nearly 200K miles and good service. Now to the Edsel. You were correct when you said this looks like a FE engine. It is just slightly larger displacement than the Ford 352 which was the original police intercepter engine of 1958 which replaced the Y block engines. E-400 V-8 ENGINE Displacement 361 Cubic Inches Horsepower 303 @ 4600 r.p.m. Torque 400 @ 2800 r.p.m. Maximum Compression Ratio 10.5:1 The more famous Edsel engines was the E 475 which was a slightly smaller displacement version of the 430 cubic inch Lincoln engine (mel). No, the Pontiac did the prominent nose with style - the Edsel was a mush-mash of discordant lines that clash. Every car style has its fans, it’s just that the Edsel has very few fans. It’s not loved for beauty - it’s valued for its oddity.

If the engine still has the original non-modified heads, it requires lead additive in the gas.
@GHP-mr3gs
@GHP-mr3gs 3 года назад
@@judythomas2939 E10 is unleaded gasoline with 10% ethanol content. The reason that older engines require lead in the gas is to allow the valve seats to seal properly. If you do not have a proper seal, not only you're losing compression, but also the blow-by will eventually burn the seat. The solution is lead additive or to modify the heads with harden valve seats.
@GHP-mr3gs
@GHP-mr3gs 3 года назад
@@judythomas2939 This kind work on older engine heads has been done since the leaded gasoline disappeared in the 80s. So it is not a new thing. It's always a good thing to do when you're rebuilding and old engine unless the hard valve seats are on already....If not, you have to use lead additive when you fill up.
