Lou; this Olds is a real gem! Wow what a classic blending of art and design, they sure don't make them like this anymore. This is what symbolized America and Detroit, when the USA and Detroit were king and aids meant assistance. The quality of these cars is just stunning, I mean they're built like tanks, the doors, hood and trunk shut like a bank vault! Man if only the USA and Detroit could recapture these times again would'nt that be gr8. Have a Gr8 God blessed day

My mom drove a 1961 Olds Super 88. It's amazing to look back and see just how much a car's looks could change in 3 years. The '61 looked nothing at all like the '58.

"how much a car's looks could change in 3 years. The '61 looked nothing at all like the '58" LOL even in just one year -- the 1959 looked nothing at all like the '58. What's more amazing about the '61 is how much worse it looked in just one year. Gone were the 1960's beautiful pointed-tip taillights, replaced by a no-upper lip, toothless - evoking front grille, creepy backwards twisted front pillars, and bland round taillights.

Just a note about the spot light . As people began to expolit the new Highway Projects to buy new homes in the suburbs while the City also narrow streets with a large frontage on homes ......the Spot Light option was already in use by Taxis and Police to read the House address from the distance. Some places had a Local by-law to paint the House Number on the Curb since driveways were abound with few cars parked on the street . It wasn't overly popular as an option but the Police cars and taxis helped to produce it at a volume to make it affordable on a factory Ordered car.

The logo Lou kept referring to was Oldsmobiles emblem for many years. Almost back to when GM acquired the brand. GM went on a crash restyling program in 57 when they saw Chrysler's new Forward Look 57's. It was quite a task in a short period of time to get all divisions restyled for the 59 models. All GM cars shared the same firewall and windshields and numerous other interchangeable parts to pull it off.

I had 2 uncles who both sold Case Tractors in rural Illinois and Missouri. One always drove Oldsmobiles and the other always drove Buicks. My dad was a welder, not a salesman like his brothers, so we always drove cheap low end Fords. When my uncles came to visit, I would go out, sit in their cars and pretend to drive with all the cool, wowie-zowie advanced options their cars always had. And I was only 5-6 years old ! I think I was born loving cars!!!

In HS my family had the 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon, a traveling land yacht for sure. I drove it a lot after getting my license and it was a lovely solid cruiser, with power brakes even. You got a green “cold” light when you started it up and had to warm it up. My Dad had me go out and start it in the morning before he or my Mom used it. Tons of chrome for sure. Great video. BTW, those crest designs on the trunk are actually back up lights. Edit: I think J2 meant that it had the two carburetors on this beauty.

It was a great time to be a boy in the mid to late 50s. I always hated to see the end of summer time, but after school started up once again, I knew that the ads for the new cars would be hitting the newspapers and magazine soon after the beginning of school. That was the one redeeming thing about that time of year. :o) They looked so exciting and dramatic in their respective premiers in print media.

Well, what can I say? What. Can. I. Say? Wow, I guess? I have always been a fan of your channel since I first found it. I have known about these cars since I got into classics (About two years, I'm 15 now so being 12 or 13 I didn't have much interests) I've always seen these cars is the background of pictures of cars and videos, but I never took the time to look more in depth. I was just browsing your channel, when I thought "I'll give this car a look, I mean its gonna be nice, its from the 50s." Boy do I regret waiting 2 years. Now this car is battling for my top spot car for 58 along with a Plymouth, Buick and Cadillac (Sixty Special) Reading other comments, I've seen people putting down the chrome due to the amount used, but I think the car has the perfect amount of chrome, no more, no less. I mean even if the chrome had a chip in it, heck, even the paintwork had a chip in it, the car wouldn't be given justice, these cars are perfect. The chrome is just muy perfecto. This is a car I wouldn't mind being stuck in an hour long traffic jam in, I mean you would just be finding more details as you sit there! 2 downsides to this car for me. 1) It isn't parked outside my house. 2) The continental kit, but that's down to taste and opinion. Edit: Whats that handle by the drivers door? It kinda looks like a bathroom light switch. Second Edit: The male mannequin in the back of the Packard Caribbean looks like a Beatle (Paul McCartney I think)

Who knows what movie Lou is showing at 1:13? Answer below…. “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” One of my all time favorites. First saw it when I was 9 years old at a “Cinerama” theater. The Cineramas had a curved screen with a special projector which gave you more of a motion effect for action movies. It really made It’s a Mad Mad World especially vivid during the many chase scenes.

Crazy automobiles in the 50-ties! This one is truly showy with tons of chrome. This was also the bling-bling atmosphere of a quite optimistic "Golden Age" in the USA. In Europe this car was not a success at all: too much is too much

America was at its Zenith!!! as reflected in the cars and culture at that time!!! Most people thought the future was going to get better and better, unfortunately the opposite happened where we find ourselves today!!! Rapidly descending into a third world cesspit!!! How can a country fall so far in just 60yrs!!!😩😥😧

@@keithdukes5990: So true! USA was the leading nation, without any discussions. Leader in all: wealth, progress, car industry, space, planes and so on. After the Seventies when Japan came up, the US car industry began to decline. And after the Ninties, China was ruining almost all: trade and industry , not only in USA but against in Europe. We all, the Western world, have to suffer under the Asien disloyal concurrence! The boring modern cars, above all omolagate dark SUVs, reflect a sad atmosphere in comparison to the joyful colored cars from the Sixties with a lot of glittering chrome. As you say: a hopeful and joyful epoch is far gone ! (for ever?)

Jerry Lewis had a TV show that was sponsored by Oldsmobile, in 1958. He did a commercial with a convertible, and you could tell he was not impressed. When he said " I drive one, too," he really wanted to say "Please drive one, too," and sounded almost apologetic.

It’s amazing that all of our new technology today does not automatically get us a spotlight as standard equipment. Ironic because we get and take so much for granted today as standard such as power windows, power locks, air conditioning, and speed control which were certainly available in ‘58 but not ubiquitous. Despite all the extras we now take for granted we don’t necessarily get spotlights as standard equipment today. We have to pay extra for spotlights now but not for inside trunk releases and rear window defrosters. So odd.

Lou I look forward to seeing the amazing cars that you feature. I ,however, get a knot in my stomach because, except for rare occasions the story I would like told goes missing as you obsess on some obscure tag or tire jack instruction while failing to ask obvious questions about the motor, history of the car, when and how the owner obtained the car, what condition the car was in when they got it, how extensive was the restoration. Why, in the case of this Olds 88 was it lacking power windows, and what options were available on a car that was missing on the featured car. I continue to watch your videos because the cars you feature are ones I'm interested in but I so often find myself dissapointed at the end having so many things about the car left unanswered.

One detail missed by Lou. The padded dashboard was starting to rise up as a safety option. Before seat belts became mandatory, car makers went from metal dash boards to padded. Common sense tells us, warring your seat belt, along with air bags, saved a lot more lives. But, padded dash boards were novel and we'll accepted. Thanks for the +. This is just one of those classics that truly overwhelms one at first sight. It seems that Mr. Harley Earl had more than a little influence in its design. I think that all of the chrome trim with the exception of the bumpers was of the highly polished stainless steel variety. This is my favorite of all of the mid to late '50s Oldsmobile designs. And that work of art instrument panel is just something that transcends the ordinary.

Make America great again, start with at one time was one of the very best companies and that’s General Motors. We all know it’s sad history especially all the common stock holders that sold after it’s going bankrupt.Well to see this company regain its once top position they should bring back Oldsmobile with quality and high standards like back in the 1950 s .Do this and watch how the general public responds.Wait and see it could happen.

In 1993 I was standing in my local salvage yard looking for parts for my daily driver a piece of crap 1981 Chevy Citation I paid $200 for and was driving!! Suddenly I hear the rumble of a V8 powering through the salvage yard and I could see a cloud of dust coming towards me and when I looked again I caught a glimpse of chrome as I ran to the end of the row of cars I was in to see WHAT was driving through the yard!!!! And just has I turned to look again it came around the corner where I was standing!!! The car was a 1958 Oldsmobile Holiday Coupe (similar to this) and I just stood there watching one of the yard workers drive by! He pulled the car into an empty space tossed the keys on the dashboard, as he slammed the door shut and turned and walked away!! Later I had collected my parts and walked back the shop to pay for what I had "picked" from the yard. I asked at the counter as I paid for my parts "Hey is the old Oldsmobile that came in for sale?" and the guy looked at me weird!! Then he said "What Oldsmobile?", and I told him "The one that was just brought in with the powder blue and white paint, that read "Holiday 88" on the side of it!!" and again he just gave me a strange look!! He excused himself then for a moment and walked out to the shop out back and then returned a few minutes later!! That is when he told me "No the car you saw doesn't run or drive and I don't know why ANYBODY would want a pile of junk like that!" and I just looked at him stunned....knowing I had watched the car drive right by me and park into an empty spot in the yard!! I knew he was lying to me and just walked out without saying another word about it!!! Three months ago, I was back over by that same salvage yard, and found that it was closed!!! I don't go over there much so I was just curious if the place was still open for business!!! That is when the horror struck me!! The whole outfit was gone, the buildings all empty and the cars in the yard were all gone, nothing but a empty field left in its place!!! I am certain they crushed that old Olds...and that just breaks my heart to know they did that!!
