1959 Chevrolet Apache Truck with 353 Detroit Diesel Engine and two transmissions.
Here's a look at the truck I had for almost 35 years before giving it back to my brother.
1959 Chev 1 ton 9 foot long box, step side.
Pulled the gas engine out in the spring of 1991 and replaced it with an aluminum block 353 Detroit Diesel engine. Discovered right away it was too slow & added another transmission to speed it up a bit.
Looking forward to firing it up and taking it for a spin & make a video of it's glorious sound soon.

Two transmissions, main & auxiliary is nothing new. Was done for years in heavy duty trucks. Usually 4 or 5 speed main and a 2, 3, or 4 speed auxiliary transmission. Split main box gears with the auxiliary
@ronfullerton3162
@ronfullerton3162 2 года назад
@@russvoight1167 Twin stick trucks have both trannys facing forward. It is to give the driver more gears to keep the engine in the power range for heavy loads. But I have seen several pickup and tonners that have had the diesel conversion done, and most of them have followed this method to get the truck capable of highway speeds. Most of them do not shift the back tranny because they have bigger higher powered diesels. Although the ability to gear down for heavy loads or close quarters would be great.

@@lovesloudcars So in your back box it seems like "3rd" and "4th" would be the only usable gears, aren't "1st" and "2nd" way too much overdrive? I've wondered about this a long time lol you're the first one I've seen actually turn a trans around. I have a Spicer 3 speed auxiliary I'm going to put in an L9000, but I'd like to get some overdrive in a old Ford ton truck we have too
@lovesloudcars
@lovesloudcars 4 года назад
@@ryansaunders1188 You are exactly right. but in reverse you can use all 4 ( 3 safely, 1st is too fast). I have some video of that, that I'll be posting in part 2 in a couple days. I'd love to find a few 4 speed auxiliary boxes that were 1 under, 1 direct & 2 over. I guess a I could run a 4 backwards if it had 2 under & 1 over we've proven that will work. But getting one that's not some huge monstrosity to fit in a 1 -2 ton size truck would be perfect.
@ryansaunders1188
@ryansaunders1188 4 года назад
@@lovesloudcars I don't know of an auxiliary with 2 overdrives but they probably made one. I have no idea why I never thought of running one of those backwards. I know where there is a Spicer 6041 in an old junk truck, now that has a good set of ratios just like it is. 2.14, 1.24, 1.00, .86. So if you turned it around backwards, just a rough guess, you'd have about a 50% overdrive, about a 20% over drive, direct, and a 20% underdrive. Now that's a whole new world lol. Anyway I can't wait to see you driving that truck, love the Detroit, I have a 4-53 pulling a sawmill. It will out pull a 3-71 any day. I have a 6-71 in a truck too.

We live in Batemans Bay, New South Wales which is a seaside town of about 20,000 so we get lots of semi trailers passing through and every now and then I'll hear a Jimmy singin' climbing 'the mad mile', especially at night when the air is heaviest. Sounds like you've got quite a collection there even minus the 871. Do you have a 653? It's my favourite? We got 'em here in International Loadstars, Whites, REO's, Diamond T's What is your work truck? Have you ever heard/seen U.D NISSAN 2-stroke diesel engines 3, 4 and 5-cyl, Japanese from the early 1970's? (They were transplanted into more than few trucks here in Aus) or an English Gardner 5-cyl 2-stroke.The UD 3 and 4-cyl (surprise, surprise, looked a heck-of-a-lot like GM's). The Gardner 5-cyl had an incredible sound. The crankshaft 'layout' meant that they fired 1,2,3,4,5 consecutively. Ya really should RU-vid 'em. That's if you're not familiar with the Gardner. They also built the 6LX and the 8LX both of which were 4-stroke inline engines. They powered Atkinson, Foden and E.R.F trucks in England and Aus, New Zealand, South Africa. I can go on about trucks, transmissions, diffs, suspensions etc, I love 'em. My Dad raised us 4 kids in and around trucks, earthmoving equipment, race-cars, bikes and boats and my wife [Jen] grew up around logging trucks, Macks because her Dad was a log-jinker owner and driver who now makes his living specializing in Mack servicing/repairing. He does a lot on Combine harvesters, graders, dozers and stuff too. Oops, as I said, I can go-on sometimes. Sorry about that. Last but not least, our new bridge accross the Clyde River is to cost $274,000,000 (AUD). Yep, I got that amount correct.

That's a dream truck right there! You've basically got yourself a scaled down semi. And the back to back transmission thing is genius! That may be an option for making my old Ford go faster. I love having the low gearing. I stick it in first and could probably pull a down house, but I feel like the 352 is gonna explode if I push it past 60mph. It's annoying going so slow when everyone else is flying past you at 80+.
@lovesloudcars
@lovesloudcars 3 года назад
Man you're preaching to the choir there my friend. I think the transmission worked great, but there's likely better options if you don't have a 2$ truck sitting out back like I did. I bet your Ford is an awesome rig already hey? Have you heard of a Ranger gear splitter? I've never seen one but they go between the bell housing and transmission. 20% overdrive or something like that, about 7 inches thick. So would not be super tough to fit into a truck. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the truck I drive most, which is an 82 international about 3or 5 ton. Same thing, way too slow. I'd like to find a small auxiliary transmission to hang behind just like I did here. Did you get to watch part 2 driving it yet? Interesting hack on the double transmissions. My buddy bought a bunch of 3-53's that came off military Gamma Goats. They all had bellhousings that would bolt up to the GM SM-465 transmission. The OE transmission was SM-465 except it had a top with levers for remote shifting instead of a shift handle. He played with various injectors till it smoked. His went into 3/4t Chevy pickups and one with an automatic went into a Dodge because he liked that the firewall was way back and flat. He had a CNC shop make him up several kits to install a THM-400 with mechanical control of the former vacuum controlled modulator. All these he changed the rear end gearing to top out at 65 with the pedal on the floor.

Thank you Ronald for watching and for your great comment. I'm sure it brought up a few forgotten memories. I hope you found part 2 driving it. That was a fun video and day. I'm planning to record some more footage of it to explore the answers to just such things. In my opinion having one in reverse takes the forward engine rpm, drops the speed, and goes the opposite direction. Therefore the second transmission doing the exact opposite should take it from very slow backwards and return to normal direction and same rpm as input speed. If I'm correct, that would be exactly the same as 4th gear forward with one transmission. I am looking forward to testing this out and posting the video. Stay tuned my friend.

In the late ‘40s, my Dad built a mid size garden tractor and used a dual tranny setup similar to this to get the gearing he wanted to plow with a small air cooled engine. I believe he ran them in series with both facing forward for a mega gear reduction. I remember driving it as a six year old and it would barely creep along in double low with the engine at power. Double high was just that: like a single high gear. He had some pretty aggressive tires and nothing would stop it when it was plowing. You may not be going fast but you couldn’t stall it. Thanks for taking me back there. I have always wondered what happened to it.

We used them for dragging hay wagons around and pulling logs and firewood and a couple had plows on them and one if the model Ts had a duece and a half rear rear end and we use to set it on blocks and run the silo blower and corn sheller off the rear yoke on the rear end and all the doodle bugs on the farm had twin transmissions it is how you made power and also got speed back in the day it was common practice to have twin transmissions we even had a doodle bug had a 3spd main wirh a 4 spd behind that then had a weird transfer case that had high/low 2wd and 4wd and then had front drive or rear drive we had a winch on the front and set up so you shifted the transfer in front drive to run the winch and used transmissions to adjust line speed that thing would drag some big logs at idle with all the gearing if you could keep it anchored.

In the early days of large diesel trucks, Detroit's were very common, 2 strokes had limited hp so they installed a brownie box. The Brownie was a heavy duty 3 speed installed like you did a 4 speed. There were all types of configurations, 5 and 3, 13 and and a brownie and so on. Those were the days when a truck driver had to know how to shift 2 boxes at the same time.

Like my Dad always said He figured if a guy learned to drive with a gas 427 & 5 & 4, then you could shift anything. I'd love to find a brownie with double over that would fit in 1 - 3 ton size trucks. Did you get to see part 2 in action?

A rancher I used to work for told me about an old Ford feed truck that they had back in the 60s ish. It wouldnt go slow enough to dump feed good, so his dad put two 4-speeds together in it and had it so he could put it in double reverse and have about a 15:1 transmission gearing, and just crawl along.

I don’t know when Chevrolet started it, but I know that in 1963 Chevrolet offered a Detroit Diesel 3-53 in 1 tons. At the time a guy came in for clutch linkage for a 63 with a 3-53 in it. I told him that we would have to look it up for the original motor. He told me the 3-53 was the original motor. I looked up at 2 of our mechanics grinning at me! I said “Ok the joke is over!” Norm showed where the special parts book on that pickup was. We had the clutch linkage parts. I was a GM parts man at the time, about 3 months on the job! I think that GM put the 3-53 from 63? to 72.

I love Detroit engines for sure, but they need to run hard to run clean and they're not a quiet motor by any stretch of the imagination. Would be a cool machine though. I wonder why they didn't play more with inline 6 Perkins or Mitsubishi engines. They're quite efficient and very quiet.
@patn7357
@patn7357 3 года назад
@@lovesloudcars After learning Dodge was using Cummins, which was incredibly smart, I thought GM should use John Deere engines. Well proven, well known, network of repair & parts across the country. I agree Perkins would be a good chose.
@lovesloudcars

@@patn7357 yup. If it wasn't for Cummins dodge would not be in business now selling trucks. Using John Deere would have made a lot of sense. Even these other proven engines. Too much pollution and automotive crap on them now though. Selling the diesel mindset without the simplicity, economy, or reliability.

That's the crazy part. Supposedly "better" but not really. Not making any better fuel economy than you could get with a gas engine in the 50's, LOTS of power for sure, but too much electronic junk on them & everything is disposable components now days.. We've got a marine Volvo engine in a big rototiller. good ( was until the oil plug fell out). But this old truck - I think you are right. Too bad someone doesn't build trucks like in the old days with Kenworths & such, - pick your engine, gears, transmission....
