The Mercedes-Benz W 128, known as the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE, was one of the top-of-the-range models of the Daimler-Benz brand with its six-cylinder injection engine. It was developed from the carburetor model 220 S (W 180 II) and built parallel to the middle class ("Little Pontoon") W 120 / W 121 with four-cylinder engines). The technology of complex gasoline direct injection had already been used by Daimler-Benz in aircraft engine construction (DB 601) and later in racing vehicles in the 1930s - from 1954 also in the exclusive "Gullwing" sports car 300 SL. In September 1958, the 220 SE was launched on the market with the simpler design of mechanical intake manifold injection used in the top-of-the-range Mercedes 300 Sc ("Adenauer-Mercedes"). In the M12 engine, the two-piston injection pump from Bosch controlled by a copy-milled space cam (mockingly "potato") injects the fuel intermittently into the intake pipes in front of the inlet valves via two triple distributors. Saloon, Coupé, and Cabriolet type 220 SE correspond to the engine, the carburetted sister models of type 220 S. The injection engine M 127 had an on 85 kW (115 hp) at 4800 / min. increased rated power. The improved performance and the slightly cheaper fuel consumption of the injector, however, had to be paid for at an additional price of 1900 marks. For another 450 marks was also the automatic coupling "Hydrak" available.
From October 1958 to August 1959, only 1974 copies were produced. In July 1994, 102 vehicles were registered in Germany at the Federal Motor Vehicle Office, were unconsidered cars in collections.
