The opening ceremonies for the Monorail. With Richard Nixon, Walt Disney, and Dick's kids. This is a pretty funny video to watch.
Also includes a small briefing on what exactly a monorail is.
A special for the 4th anniversary of the park.
I will not post the entire broadcast because it really is just dull. AND PACKED WITH KODAK SPOTS. However, I am uploading the key moments.

Man I wish I could've experienced the original Disneyworld. They were outrageously optimistic of the future and yet they'd all be sorely disappointed now. How sad.

did you know that this was the first run ever made without any mechanical failures? literaly hours before the grand opening on its tests runs it would catch fire!

Yes, a Monorail has to be elevated, but even at Elevation, it uses up less land than the current system. Also, if you look at the amount of concrete and steel used on just the Metro Gold Line alone, you could have easily built 2.5 Monorail lines with that material. I was there during the MTA meetings with the engineers, and it was all about money and greed They knew that an elevated Monorail would not stop an ambulance from crossing towards Huntington Hospital...

Aurthur C Clarke suggested the idea to LA stating that it would not only help congestion, but it would help people's moral by giving them the sensation of flying.

Anyone else hear Nixon correct Walt when Walt said, "Mr. Nixon?" Nixon was nobody compared to Walt Disney.

We've got one in Seattle. It works fine and people seem to like it. Not sure why nobody else (other than Vegas) has one.

Tokyo's monorail system has had ground-level tracks since it was built in the 60's... and that's JUST Tokyo... there are more.

Being a life-long resident of Southern California and a monorail fan it was not entirely the fault of local leaders that a monorail system was never built here. There has been at least five different bond measures on the county and state ballot since Walt's monorail went into operation at Disneyland, and an ignorant public voted them all down. The residents of Southern California have no one but themselves to blame for the smog and traffic jams for the past 50 years.

Don't discount the monorail, just because it's fifty years later! New ones are being built all over the world. Unfortunately the USA thinks it's smarter to mix trains with traffic and pedestrians (so-called 'light' rail). Anyway, if interested, check out monorails.org
