I picked up this engine at a local estate sale this summer. It decodes to a 1960 Chevrolet 283 170HP engine with a 2 barrel carburetor. Other than finding the correct starter hardware, installing manifolds and priming the oil system it didn't take much work to get it running.

As others agree, the 283 is a great engine! Friend had a s10 blazer with one, it was surprisingly docile when cruising around, but man it ripped when you opened up the Carter 4barrel!

I inherited a 1965 283. It was rusted solid with heads off the engine. That was summer 2019 and now that little motor is like new again. Cost me about $1600 for machine shop work and most of the rotating assembly parts. I have another $1000 in it for Edelbrock intake, carb, HEI, water pump, fuel pump, pulleys, valve covers. Looks sweet on my engine stand. I have not tried to start it yet. I will soon. Bored .060 to a 292 cid.

I have a '55 Chevy 4-door for 44 years. My Grandfather purchased it new, It came with the 235 c i 6 cyl. I swapped it out with a 283 when I got it, It was a daily driver for over 20 years. I then overhauled it in 2003 with a mild street cam, electronic ignition, Edelbrock carb and headers and all new interior and blue exterior. I've only put 800 miles since the overhaul but still runs great.

I was stationed at a NATO post in the Netherlands from 1968-70 in the U S Army and at our motorpool we had 67 Chevy cars with a 283 three speed stick and would take trips in Germany autobahns going speeds of 120 mph flat to the floor mile after mile and many German cars would blink their lights to pass us. Gosh that was so much fun. In Belgium we would go 100 in a three line highway the middle lane was passing for both side and would play chicken blink our lights who would pull over first. We called it suicide lane. Give us a 283 let the Army test them. Never blew a engine. We all lived to tell our stories. We would smoked those tires in Brussels Belgium and the people thought someone had a accident. If we got caught with all this stuff we would be in the stockade for life. I am sure they had to put on new tires every month. True story it was like a vacation over there. Great people great memories.

I have a 1979 350 xxxx010 block on my engine stand. went through a rapid cam/lifter failure. filled itself full of metal. stiffened up its wrist pins. went to retrofit roller for it. sick and tired of flat tappet / current oil compatibility problems. the aluminum heads are good for a solid 400HP and the cam should be a good match. Looks like going away from stock log cast iron manifolds, headerrs on order for my square body 3/4 ton 4x4 NP203 equipped "1980" which I did paint/body/ mechanical 15 years ago. bondo and fiberglass does cover a multitude of sins. I gave thought to putting a stroker kit in it, but I don't have the skills to clearance the block properly. but if push comes to shove, I'd rather do a 372. ( 4.125 bore , 3.48 stroke )

@@adamcarfield7201 I'd 2nd that. 327 for the win. At least from Chevrolet the 327 was one of the highest HP small blocks at 375HP available for a production car . The double hump heads ( and ya, I have in my garage a set of small valve double humps ) with the Duntov 30 cam. too bad they didn't put that cam in the subsequent 350 engine. But as it is, you and I certainly can. my 2nd gen Pontiac Trans Am has a reasonable facsimile of the LT-1 350 in it. based on the 350HP/327 cam with 11:1 forged pistons. been that way for almost 30 years now. You said that 2jets are half of a quadrajet, but the 2gs are actually closer to the carburetor that came before the quadrajet, the 4jet. Nobody runs them on anything before 1966 but the insides are almost exactly the same as a 2g mirrored. Half a quadrajet would be the dualjet. And at least you’re not running one of those things lol

Love that engine test stand. I have a build of one in *slow* progress. It irritates me to install an engine just to find something wacky that requires pulling it back out. Do an initial runin on a stand and once you know its all good. in it goes. That carb looks more like the 2G which is half a 4G carb and not the DualJet which is half a Quadrajet. I cracked open my Rochester manual to check. I do have a Dualjet around here someplace which my son lifted out of a pickn' pull yard. There are 2 versions of the 2 bbl carb. one with the 2bbls without the secondaries. and another with a 1 bbl primary, with 1 bbl secondary. I learned how to tune the QuadraJet late 80's for fuel economy and power .

283 is/was a great powerplant...327 a nod in the right direction....but gather 'round children, if you want to see a sbc play, the 302 was the gig to have....more rare than a street hemi and way faster out of the hole.
@terrykehler1916
@terrykehler1916 3 года назад
302 was the best of both worlds put together. 283 crank with 327 bore!! Also the first hot rodded Chevy small blocks were punched out thick wall casting 1957 283 blocks that were punched out 0.125in over to 4.00in bore, same as 327, they called them 301s but in reality they are the same 302!!

Ford & Chevy have the same physical timing order, but number the cylinders differently. If you put wires on your Ford exactly as you would a Chevy & counting the cylinders as Chevy does, it will be correct.

That is Cool, I Have a 1963 283 all stock, Has a 2 bbl carb ,hooker headers, Dual point, water pump, Made my own motor run stand from a cart you can get at Northern tool, Small gas tank from 5 h.p. motor from old snow blower, It looks so neat on stand. When I have it out in drive way people stop to see how I built this, The cooling is from my 57 chevy, I have under 200.00 dollars to build cart stand, The paper work says it will hold up to 1.400 pounds I am not going to find that out..The cart is used for plants at plant stores or for bags of rock. I put down 2 cut 3/4 ply wood sheets, It is wat to cool...

Dwell affects timing but timing does not affect dwell dwell is how long the points stay open in relation to crankshaft rotation its few and far between youll see points most like myself once the hei came out in 73 - 74 it was all over for the points i cant even count how many points distributors i swapped out for an hei it was like night and day often times due to bad points or dwell being off considerably condensers bad etc points wear and electronic ignition. Does not so its just more accurate for a lot longer it really never goes out of dwell so the other parts wear like centrifugal weights for timing they need to be replaced and make sure they work right .. Sorry rambling smoke another one lol

Yeah coil for ea cylinder fired by the crank and cam sensors timing is all comtrolled by the computer nothing is mechanical anymore .. You can run a newer style L.S. engine w a carb w an msd type igntion system that uses the two sensors and you can set your own timing curve w a laptop its all changed. From what it used to be ..

Nice engine!! Those are peanut type spark plugs so, the those heads are no older than 1971. Hopefully from a 307. The good part is they probably have hardened exhaust seats that will work well with unleaded gas. Also, 283s did not have vibration dampeners. Maybe it's a 327.

As the man decoded the block to a 283, no way it would be displacing 327. The 283 uses a 3 7/8 bore and a 3.0 inch stroke. the 302, 327, 350 engines use a 4 inch bore. the 327 uses a 3.25 inch stroke. And yes, I had to lookup the bore of the 283 in my Chevrolet Power Catalogue.
