Steve Schultz of Litchfield Park, Arizona shares all the details of his loving restoration of a very rare 1960 Edsel Ranger convertible. The Ford motor company pulled the plug on Edsel production only five weeks into the 1960 model year. Steve has been a collector of Edsels for many years and has become an expert in many ways. Come along with me, as we learn about the car, some of the quirks and details, and go for a ride!

1960 was a bumper-crop year for automotive ugliness, so the Edsel didn't really stand out all that much, especially alongside Lincoln and Mercury. And look at the nausea-inducing atrocities from GM and Chrysler. It's no wonder Studebaker and Rambler did well sales-wise in 1960.

The feedback was so poor when the 58 debuted, that Ford began an early redesign for 59. However, the damage was already done. By 1960 it was too little too late. They got the styling right for 60, but it also looked too much like other Ford products for that year. So they pulled the plug. 🤷‍♂️ Also the nomenclature didn't help. The branding was actually Edsel, and the model was Ranger. But the Ranger name had been used previously by Ford on commercial vehicles, and I believe another manufacturers used it as a trim on their wagons. So the buying public always saw it as a "Ford Edsel", and didn't justify the elevated asking price.
@kennethjackson7574
@kennethjackson7574 Год назад
There were only about 2,500 made, and Edsel was actually bankrupt before 1960 began. For decades thereafter the Guinness Book of Records listed the Edsel bankruptcy as the biggest financial loss ever survived by a company.
@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602
@@kennethjackson7574 Nobody filed for bankruptcy over the Edsel. It cost Ford $250M but they more than made it back with the Falcon in first-year sales. I haven't read Guinness, but if they used the word bankruptcy, they're full of canal water.

Great restoration job. I'd like to see how it looked with factory rocker moldings. Even if you just held them in place to take a photo, it would be very interesting to see how they would look. 60 Edsels had a dual rear radio antenna (probably an option) that blended in with chrome fender trim. The antennas slanted to the rear, and were very stylish. I see them on a white 60 Edsel driving around in Miami every so often. It was mentioned in one youtube video that the 60 Edsels were 81 1/2 inches wide, which required some states to make exceptions in licensing them, which otherwise would have fallen into a "truck" category.

Edsel- Every Day Something Else Leaks😉. Fun fact the '61 Comet was to be the next gen Edsel. But the decision was made to pretend the Edsel never happened and move on. The connection was Edsels in the last 2 years were sold at the Edsel Lincoln Mercury dealers. For the 1st 2 years it was branded as the Comet the Mercury name would not appear until '62.
@BarryTsGarage
@BarryTsGarage Год назад
This is true. Thanks for adding to the story!
@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602
Yes, but not in that order, you understand. The first Comet clays were planned to be the 1961 Edsel, a "luxury compact". When that was determined to be too risky (remember, Ford stock had just gone public in 1956) Comet became a stand-alone make. Alongside English Ford, it was to be sold thru the recently realigned "Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln" dealer's banner, formed in January, 1958, and wasn't introduced until March 17, 1960.

@BarryTsGarage
@BarryTsGarage Год назад
Well, I appreciate your comment, but looking at a 1960 Pontiac front end I just can’t exactly see what you’re talking about? Maybe a 61 skylark? Also, I think they rightly abandoned the ‘58 original look reacting to overwhelming public reaction. Also the division was very unlucky timing the new endeavor with the recession that year. A combination of bad choices and unlucky timing. One thing they did to make them separate from Fords was to make sure the smallest engine was a good size V8, no six cylinders so all of them would have a good bit of power, no matter what trim level.

No Edsel ever came with wire wheels. Talk about keeping it "all original"... gimme a break! I've known Steve for almost 50 years and he was always a very honest and trustworthy straight-shooter.
