THE MOTOWN SOUND The new 'Detroit Sound' a small Negro owned and operated record company music has become the leading national company in selling 45 discs.
James Jamerson in the background. The master bassist creating just one of the thousands of Motown Memories. His bass lines will always be the standard for serious bass players everywhere.
Easy to forget that Motown was still considered a small company back then, even when it was pumping out all those classics. Gordy's company was a family-owned company, an independent, not affiliated with any of the big record companies like RCA, Atlantic, etc. It is truly mind-boggling that this "small" company was beating the big guys when it came to their hit ratio. Just goes to show you, if you give the public something that really connects with them on a gut level, and do it with quality, you can beat anybody any time.
The music speaks for itself, that's why. Berry Gordy himself thought the mixing and mastering at motown was lacking in those days compared to other records that came out on other companies around the same time, and in sone cases by ear he probably was right, but their records sold like hot cakes, why? The music (songs, arrangements and production) itself they was putting out was that good back then.
Sing that song David! 2019 we still love you and miss you and Eddie, Paul and Melvin. Just watch David’s body movements when he sings. He puts his heart and soul into every song he sings.
THIS IS A JOY TO SEE THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO. THANK YOU MUCH FOR SHARING, I APPRECIATE IT. IT'S ALMOST LIKE THESE GUYS ARE STILL HERE WITH US. MUCH LOVE FORM SEATTLE
Ruff! Laying it down as only he could. The Classic Five! No other composition of singers bearing the moniker "Temptations" will ever surpass the magic created by THE Temptations! 🎤👓🎩👞🎩👞🎩👞🎩👞🎩👞
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS. THIS WAS GREAT SEEING DAVID SING THIS LIVE. THIS WAS FROM TEMPTATIONS WITH A LOT O' SOUL--WISH IT DID NOT CUT TO THE SUPREMES THOUGH. SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON THE TEMPS.
Ah, those studio musicians of Motown...James Jamerson, the father of the bass line played like a lead guitar..a genius. He was the sound of the driving beat of those songs that resembled the sounds heard in the auto plant where Berry Gordy once worked, was pure Motown with that drivinv beat and with those amazing soaring horns it was impossible not to listen to it. Papa Benny Benjamin, maestro of the drums...all of the greats are there. When they started using the Detroit Symphony the square looking white guys, over 55 in suits were kind of amazed to be invited to play on their tracks.these snobs who never heard a rock n' roll record they liked. Once they started with the Motown stable of singers they all got to enjoy it, and each other.
The talent standing in this room is mind boggling... just seeing Ruffin and James Jamerson in that room would be enough to make me shit myself.... I'm in awe just watching this.
The most interesting thing about this video is how much ahead of their time it shows Motown was. The fact that they used a female musician (Bobbye Hall) in that day and time (featured on congas) should be applauded, as this was extremely rare at that time!
This was staged, but real! David even got one part of words wrong. The outside world wanted to know how records were made. Berry thank GOD Gordy gave is this! By 1963 Motown stop recording live. Audio track was first, then background. Last was lead vocals. Still I'm happy they did this live play!
We were shown this program as a 16mm film (on a Bell and Howell sound projector) in elementary school in 1967. Sorry Is A Sorry Word wasn't a hit but it SHOULD have been.
I think it should have been "David Ruffin and the Temptations" maybe David would still be around. Believe they should have given him that. Maybe his life would have been different. 🤔
David was an amazing lead singer. The Temptations weren't the same without him. I was never a Dennis Edwards fan, and after that they lost their appeal IMHO.
I love David ruffin 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💜🌹💜🌹💜🌹💜🌹💜🌹 The music 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 sooths My soul 💜 on every single song ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💜 rip sweetheart 👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄👄💋💋💋💋💋💕🌼🌹😆🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌹
I was a baby when all this was happening however, it is a blessing that my family did not shelter me from the music growing up on the East Side of Detroit. I Love my home town.and the legacy that it leaves. Also, Daviid really did take them to another level. But they were great as a group. Thanks You alll who are sharing these memories and my roots.
Tony Mason It was a mutual thing. Because David was also a solo artist at Motown before he joined the group, and he was not a top selling artist back then. His success came when he sang lead on My Girl. But the group had a hit with Eddi singing lead before David took over as lead
That guy is the renowned Brian Holland of the famous HDH writing team. If you had listened to the album "Temptations With A Lot Of Soul", you would know the final cut was above par. Otis is featured in "Don't Send Me Away", a smooth ballad. The Temps next album was their best ever..."I Wish It Would Rain".
@@MrDarkElement I realize studio sessions consists of takes and retakes, it was more of a joke. But thanks for the info... didn't know that was Holland (of famous Holland-Dozier-Holland).
Granny always said they don't want you and don't mean for anyone else to have you. I thought who could she be talking about. I know now. She hate me indeed. Setup from birth.
