This advertising-free video features a really nice, original 1960 Silvertone 1432 amp, sent by the owner, a performing musician, for a complete overhaul to assure maximum reliability and tone. All the electrolytics, Sangamo capacitors, several out-of-spec resistors, and the tired old 12" Alnico Rola speaker were replaced. There is a before and after comparison of the old speaker vs new, and a full audio demo with the new speaker, featuring humbuckers vs single coils in both inputs plus 3 demos of the excellent Tremolo effect. In addition, we will open 2 gift boxes and take a musical drone flight overlooking El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico.

Uncle Doug you are a national treasure and a RU-vid power hitter. Your work is exemplary to all of us. I am a 48 year electrical guy, 36 years as an electrician and probably 10 as an EE. Now to get past all that (whey) my point is ego and pride are the down fall of many an otherwise good man. I believe people that can say "Here is my mistake you might make a similar one in the heat of battle so be aware termination points matter " Always verify. Short leads may cause you to take a short cut that seems reasonable. There is nothing but positive outcome to using an opportunity to teach by example. I tell my Apprentices all the time "check your pride and ego at the door as you come in" Dead folks (in my trade if you let those get in the way you can be proud, egotistical and DEAD) don't generally have pride or ego problems if you like living. So in your most enjoyable way with your wit and humor right beside some of the best content on RU-vid I echo the other hundreds of positive uplifting comments and say "Thank You Uncle Doug for being you, doing what you do and leaving us better when we finish the video" God Bless long life and prosperity to you. Keep those videos coming we look forward to each and every one!!

Hi Doug, I have been a fan of your channel forever. I am 71 now and still play guitar. That music at the end of this video showing where you live is great. Reminds me of my home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have lived in Canada since I was 18. I left the States during the Vietnam War. But I will always have fond memories of Texas and New Mexico and Arizona. I lived there as a kid. My father was a crew member on the U.S.S. Arizona that sank in Pearl Harbour. Keep doing your videos. I honestly have never seen a better channel. And your car building ability is unbelievable you are one smart guy. Funny how I discovered your channel. You are a very gifted person. The one thing that caught my attention, was that you seem to be so calm abd at peace with everything . Not many people like you.

I watch these "jewels" of videos in their entirety before writing comments and this time it worked out great because I had a few questions that by the end, you had answered. In these times of pandemics and polarization of politics, it is comforting to watch your videos and bring normalization to an uncertain world! I've seen a nice repair on a similar handle on vintage luggage done by taking a strip of Tyvek house wrap and folding it several times into a layered band of somewhat smaller width than the handle, cut to length, brass grommets installed on the ends. That was then placed within the leather, if possible, or under it if not, screws through the grommets, so that the Tyvek becomes the primary support when you grab the handle, and the leather remains just for show.

Unchka Doug , beautiful job on a beautiful Vintage amp... Good call on that speaker upgrade, made a world of difference in it's sound , tone , & volume .... That's one of the best attribute you possess that sets you apart from all the rest of the Technicians I've seen .... They either don't care or they're too worried about doing too much & or driving the repair cost up instead of worrying about the level of quality of the rebuild & the integrity of the long term reliability & the total sound improvement that you CAN make ... KUDOS to you & the integrity , & quality level of work you do all the time , every time ..... ...🐈🐈... I too have an old Silvertone Amp of my late father's I just might want you to go through & make this a viable amp once again .....It's from the late 50's or maybe very early 60's.... Only trouble is I would need a few photos of the cabinet to construct a NEW Carcass / cabinet for as you know the Amps that were really gigged with & taken in & out in all kinds of weather did NOT Survive being they were made of particle board ... But , I would still have to look through his attic to find this amp to start with , I know it has to be around there somewhere ...Had been out of sight & out of mind for Several Decades until I was reminded of it by your Video ...I do believe with some dimensional specs & a few photos I could construct a very similar cabinet , I think it'd be worth a try .....You see , he had a matched set , the amp , & a Red & Cream thick solid body guitar to go with it ...... If I do locate them I believe I'd like to have BOTH of them Restored to their original ( as close as possible ) Playable Condition ...... So , sometime in the future you will prolly be hearing from me about the amp....By the way . .The amp cabinet may have fallen apart , but the amp itself worked perfectly til the day the cabinet failed .. Never had a second's trouble out of it .....No issues ... Would just need a going thru & update like this one did ... Thanks for your time ...You are the best ...👍👍👍👋👋👋🐈🐈

Greetings, Arthur. I appreciate your desire to send the amp to me for repair, but it sounds like the kind of job that would end up costing far, far more than the amp is worth. This is the kind of job that is only economically feasible if you do the work yourself......and, think of the satisfaction you would derive from the process.

I've already located a good Luthier within a few miles of my house to go over around & all thru the guitar , and hopefully when I find & dig them out you will have time to save that , ( the amp ) particular piece of my family history ....It was back in the late 50's when She bought him the first Guitar & Amp he ever owned from Brand New & back then that was a big thing .....So , hopefully no one got rid of the old stuff in their attic thinking they were just cleaning out junk ... ... That’s a slick cab!! Sounds great! That sm-57 really makes a difference! If you’re so inclined,adding just a $99 condenser mic about 6 ft away along with the 57 close to the amp will let you get some room verb and give u some easy to control highs. Just run both thru an inexpensive 4 channel personal mixer if your interface has limited inputs. Meditatively satisfying and informative video as always!

@@UncleDoug Is it better for some components to support the present day manufacturers and wholesalers of appropriate standard items . after all we dont tend to make our own tubes, resistors or capacitor, though we could assemble and wind our own transformers. Speakers are a mid-way item, unless you are pressing volumes the making of the baskets, magnets and cones themselves is unlikely to economic to do at home, voice coils can be re-wound if you have the patience. But the Rola could have been re-coned and re-magnatised but it is better to create a more usable design if it is cheaper, easier and quicker to so do. Some manufacturers may have chosen components because they were all that was avalible at the time, or to avoid patent infringment, or some suppliers may have had exclusive supply deals with a competitor (or were wholly owned by the end manufacturer - so their product may have been used even if (with time) it was shown to be inferior)). Doug, when you first tested the tremolo you were using the mic input and then you showed it working with the instrument input, I'm curious does tremolo work with the mic? It would seem odd that someone would use tremolo with a mic...
@coolrockindaddy6630
@coolrockindaddy6630 3 года назад
I thought the same. I wouldn’t expect tremelo on the mic input.
@UncleDoug

According to the schematic, it appears that the trem should work on both channels, Mike......but you could be right.

Thats for the Crimson and Clover cover...
@highpath4776
@highpath4776 3 года назад
One might want a tremelo effect with the mic, though re-check the schematic on the actual tip signal pathway from the mic input, depends where in the circuit you put the tremolo, If both inputs share a common pre-amp then you cannot really avoid it, you can split the trem circuit to run either from the instrument input then to the pre-amp or secondary tube or from its own pre-amp circuit ( would the component values differ for the positioning). You have to remember the amps were made to a price point to the functionallity offered. The best circuit would offer a trem option by a switch for mike input to the desired tremolo oscillation, and likewise in the instrument 2 circuit, but it adds to complexity with additional wiring in a tight space, depends if the amp is being used as a convenience, in full professional mode you would run your mike/s through separate amp units.

Hi Doug, If you wonder the main reason why speakers are not soldered to the wires in the first place, it is because of the vibrations. Due to vibrations caused by the speaker, potentially the solder will break over time so its a good practice measure to use "crimp" style connectors. The second reason is of course the ease of swapping a speaker without using a soldering iron.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 3 года назад
Are you sure about that, TC? Virtually every amp I have ever worked on has the wires soldered to the speaker lugs....and I don't recall ever seeing a broken solder joint.....but thanks for your input.
@Bluescobra
@Bluescobra 3 года назад
@@UncleDoug I have not seen many vintage or older amplifiers, so maybe that was not done earlier for either economic reasons (need for crimping pliers, specific crimps that may be harder to source...)? Most cars I have worked on had/have these type of lugs for speakers to prevent harm from vibrations as main reason so I assume this may follow the same principle, especially for travel amplifiers. I'm pretty positive engineers used to wrap the components "legs" around turrets to increase reliability for instance. Even if the solder kinda chipped of the component or became a bit loose, the wire would still be attached. You can imagine being a plane operator in WW2, you don't want your radio to go bad because a solder joint broke during a high G maneuver or due to the vibrations over time ;) Thanks for your great videos!

Hello Doug! Another award-winning video as always. Danelectro amps were actually made here in New Jersey, about 45 minutes from me. The interesting thing about Nathan Daniel was, he started out making amplifiers for Epiphone back in the 1930's then formed his company back in '47. He not only made amps for Sears Roebuck, but also for Montgomery Ward under the Airline name. Even though these amplifiers were cheaply made using the crappiest components, what made them sound awful was the cheap speakers they used, as you have proven in this video. The actual amplifiers sounded good with a better speaker. He also made quite a few "Widow Maker" models with series heater strings...deadly amps to use on stage. I remember one model that Sears sold that was a guitar, and a case with a built-in amplifier. That model was deadly. Many beginners got knocked on their split peach if they touched a radiator in their bedroom. The circuit was very simple; it was basically the audio section used in an AA5 radio, minus the RF/IF/detector stage. The speaker you used was a decent choice for economy and better sound. I still get these in for repair once in a while. A lot of players will pay insane prices to get one of these amps.

A pleasant 58 minutes spent with Uncle Doug. The "look" of that amp is so interesting that I decided to look it up in a 1960 Sears catalog (online) to see how much this amplifier sold for in 1960. Sears offered it at a price of $67.95 ($600 in today's money). By way of comparison a 1960 Fender price list, listed offered the Champ 600 at $62.50, a Princeton at $82.50 and a Deluxe at $136.30.

A hint from Randy Bachman about leather handles; he used Garnet made for him by Gar Gilles in Winnipeg; he had Gar add an oven-type steel handle under the leather one with nuts and bolts for security. No one could see the second handle from the audience. As you may know Garnet amps were VERY, VERY, heavy! Roadies are not what anyone would call gentle when moving equipment, loading and unloading.
