Harmony H322 Bass Amp.......The "mini" Bassman from Hell !!

This video chronicles the nightmarish repair of a thoroughly botched early 1960's Harmony Model H322 Bass Amp, probably built by Lectrolab. Since it features powerful (7591) fixed-bias output tubes and four (8-inch) speakers, it resembles a "mini" Fender Bassman, but was plagued by yards of tangled added cables, ill-conceived modifications, muddy sound, low volume, and a roaring 60Hz hum. Fixing it was one of the greatest challenges I have faced, and actually required a few months "vacation" from the task to avoid either insanity or retaliation with an axe (not the guitar type) :)
Extra features include the opening of a very special gift from a generous viewer, visits from Jack and K.C., and a really special modification to one of the hot rods. Here is the link to the video discussing the special gift: • A Studebaker Tube Radi...
WARNING: All filter capacitors MUST be fully discharged before working on any circuit. Use only one hand when working on a live circuit. Although I point with a finger from time to time in videos, it is best to always use an insulated pointer, like a chopstick. Please be careful :)

Please, subscribe to Uncle Doug and his merry cast of guitar wielding kitties!!! This channel should be one of the vital sites for AMPAHOLICS! Again Uncle Doug has brought to light another rare, probably unknown amp. I started my infatuation with guitars and especially amps in the early 60s when I first heard my long lost cousins from Wyo. play early Venture's instrumentals through a big, 2 speaker tube amp that was loud enough to make my body vibrate. I went home and got started trying to play "Johnny B. Goode" on Harmony Stella guitar with string action so high you could have shot arrows with it. My break through was when I could make the 1-4-5 chord change, and hear and understand them! I broke all but the low E and A strings but I got it right. I am 70 years young and when I play guitar I feel just like I did at 13! If that is not enough to get you to subscribe to this channel, then maybe you are not an AMPAHOLIC! Thank you Uncle Doug for sharing, and teaching us all, your vast knowledge and experience. Guitars and Cars, from the sound to the paint they are loud, powerful and exciting! Thanxz

Oh man, stuck here in lockdown in New Zealand, I sure needed my Uncle Doug fix. That Harmony sure is a neat amp, and the Ford is looking great! Here in quarantine-land, my JCM800-2204/Mesa inspired homebuilt 12 inch combo amp is running sweet since its addition of a lovely reverb tank (powered by a PCL86 tube) and my motorcycle restoration (1980s Suzuki Katana) is going nicely (and draining the bank account again now they've relaxed the courier rules and we can buy a bit of stuff again). You're a treasure, Doug. Look after yourself. I want to keep watching for years.

Yet another brilliant video Uncle Doug. I am a 60 something that started out with a real interest in old guitar amps but a total lack of ability and understanding of the subject. Your videos are so informative and I am now thinking of taking my first tentative steps in purchasing an old amp to repair. Unfortunately at the moment due to my severe underlying health issues I am currently isolated for the next 10 weeks over here in the UK. I will just have to go back (again) over your old videos. Your love of animals guarantees that you are a “great guy” in my opinion. We have a 15 yr old Bichon Frisée who is diabetic and went blind - but several very expensive operations later mean that the little guy can see again. Insulin twice per day etc, etc means that we are paying a fortune in vets bIlls - but he is worth every penny for the love and frIendship he has give us over the years. IMO screw clamps to a mechanic are as what electrical tape is to pro amp repair technicians. Amazon sells a slick , entry level pinch clamp set for $22 . Pinch clamps can only be used once, but once you use them you will fall in love with them. They are clean, don’t cheese up your hose, and do not leak. They come in various sizes. @@UncleDoug Here's my philosophy regarding botched/modified amps. The manufacturer built it the way they did for a reason. Fantastic!! I have been catching up on Uncle Doug vids that I haven't yet seen as well as rewatching my favorites so you can imagine my delight to be notified of a brand new one! I love it. I just paused this one long enough to chime in with that and that I've seen speakers that looked exactly like those before. Same baskets and same color cones. The ones I saw had Whizzer cones and were branded Stromberg Carlson. I'm looking forward to seeing if they put the whizzers on these cones. Well, back to the action...

Someone else said the same things about the speakers, DE, but alas, I never pulled them to see about the whizzer cones. They may well be SC's.

Well Doug, this is why it's all ways a pleasure to work behind a novice that re-engineers "factory oversights." Keeps life from being boring. I bought a 73 Nova from a kid that had dumped thousands of his fathers money into shinny parts with painted on names. Nothing worked. Nothing... This is why his father was there to see to it his son got an appropriate selling price for the lawn art that eats cash. I paid him $300.00. It was a great car. I started the repairs by tearing it down to the frame. It was just easier.

I always wonder about the second story. The one that explains why the amp had to be repaired by the retired TV guy at the VFW and he only had what he had. Whoever did what, they did it well enough to get it to you instead of the dump. A field medic patched up the wounded well enough for transport to the Mayo clinic. So I say "Well Done!". Hi Doug - I went to change out a bad wall receptacle today in my laundry room, one socket was dead. 10 feet away is another socket that works fine, and just for fun I tested it with my plug-in socket checker. Guess what? No ground connection AND reversed hot wire ! This house was rewired professionally about 15 years ago, and I never had cause to check these. There was a copper ground wire mounted inside the box but not connected. Well, I wasn't going to play any tube amps, phonographs or old radios in that area, but what if my son's friends came by and wanted to have some fun with some of my old instruments in that room when I wasn't home? I watched this video and your comment about the dpst on/off switch caught my attention. Little did I know, , , , Super-clean job on the Chevy motor. VERY handsome !! Stay safe, everyone. Richard
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 4 года назад
I had an outlet in my music room with reversed wiring and didn't realize it (after years of use) until I plugged in a series-filament amp with a 3-wire chassis-grounding power cord. Fireworks ensued. You can't trust the wiring in your house, as you just found out. It must be checked.

Uncle D...yet another fine example of what was a true labor of love restoration. Artful work to be sure...but for one thing. By eliminating the "5 pounds of crap" network of cabling (you so rudely disparaged) the amp lost perhaps it's 2nd most invaluable feature...no longer can it be used to ensnare the unsuspecting, rock 'n' roll loving octopi that are so well known to flourish in abundance in the Gulf. Oh well...worthwhile tradeoff in the never ending quest for the elusive ultimate tone. Looking forward to the joyride video in the '34 Ford you teased us with. Hi Uncle Doug, I was going back through some of you're older videos and I really enjoyed this one. This old Lectrolab circuit reminds me of my own R600. I love the amp's sound, but it was a noisy mess when I got it. Lots of 60 cycle hum. They used the chassis for the filament return. I believe, looking at your video, someone had already made that mod to the amp. The black and white twisted pair in yours looks it was an attempt to reduce hum. With mine was I added the proper twisted pair filament, with center tap, and now mine is quiet. Glad to see you had a quality cabinet, mine is that real loose density fiber board. Crude as hell, but I love it none the less.
