This 1960s color film about the Far East is one of a series of Air France “Flying Holidays” travelogues directed by Jack Sanger. It opens in a canal in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by banana trees. Men use poles to move the boats. One canoe is full of colorful souvenirs. The camera moves past the houses on stilts; a man sits on the steps and washes dishes in the canal (1:15-2:20). It passes a temple dock and temple (2:21-2:36). Food is cooked in a metal container in a canoe on its way to the floating market. Canoes are full of produce and meats for sale (2:37-4:02). Wat Arun Buddhist Temple is shown, followed by Wat Benchamabophit, the Marble Temple. Its stylized lions guard the chapels. Inside the tall doors is a colossal statue of a seated Buddha (4:04-4:42). Young monks in yellow one-shouldered robes walk to class at Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. They pass a Marco Polo statue. The spiers of the Tombs of the Kings are shown (4:43-5:15). The grounds of the Grand Palace house Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha have colorful guardians (5:17-5:51). Angkor, Cambodia is shown from overhead. Ruins of buildings and statues are covered by tree roots. The Temple of Banteay Srei has been restored (6:04-8:33). Giant stone sculptures of men are shown at Angkor Thom. Through the Victory Door are walls of highly carved figures. The Terrace of the Elephants has carved reliefs and standing statues, as does the Terrace of the Leper King, whose statue is on top (8:35-9:34). The Temple of Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat. The stone architecture with carvings, statues, and steps climbed by monks are shown. (9:35-10:42). Dressed elephants walk past the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. The Royal Ballet troupe performs wearing traditional highly embroidered costumes. Hands and feet are shown up-close (10:44-12:19). The jagged coastline of Hong Kong is panned (12:27-13:08). A row of red rickshaws is in contrast to a 1950s Standard Vanguard (13:09-13:21). The view of the water includes a junk boat, ferry boat, and the Panama cargo ship Star Alcyone, formerly the USS Alcyone (AK-24). (13:26-13:50). Ferry boats are shown. A giant Pepsi-Cola billboard can be seen on a building (13:52-14:08). A woman walks by, an oriental high slit in her skirt (14:13-14:23). The streets and buildings in the Business District are shown. 1950s busses and cars mingle with a rickshaw shown up-close (14:24-15:30). The multi-colored signs in the Chinese quarter are shown (15:30-15:50). An open-air “thieves market” shows produce, sushi, and goldfish. A man carries vintage sewing machines. (15:51-17:04). The rickshaw takes a businessman to the Tiger Balm Haw Par Mansion (17:05-17:45). Luxury hotels at Repulse Bay Beach highlight terrace dining (17:47-18:20). People wearing conical coolie hats gather at Aberdeen. They live on sampans. One has a chicken walking in it. Children use an attached long oar to row (18:22-20:13). The runway that disappears into the ocean is seen from the pilot’s view (20:26-20:40).
