Denis Law would not want to be reminded of this Home Championship match between England and Scotland at Wembley on 15 April 1961. Law would instead preferred the 1967 encounter between his country men and England at Wembley which Scotland scored a sensational 3-2 win. That record breaking England's thrashing of Scotland was a replica of what had happened six years back in April 1955.The late Duncan Edwards at 18 was making his England debut in England's 7-2 rout of Scotland. But the 1961 Home Championship match at Wembley was a nightmare for the Scottish goalkeeper Frank Haffey.In just seven minutes in the second half he let in four goals.Jimmy Greaves registered a hattrick and skipper Johnny Haynes helped himself to a brace.Bryan Douglas and Bobby Smith too added to the scoring sheet. That England team of 1961 peaked at the wrong time for the 1962 World Cup finals in Chile.Bobby Robson who scored the first goal would find himself out of the 1962 World Cup finals being replaced by the Westham twenty one year Bobby Moore.

Scotland clearly dominated this match. Better ball skills and passing and all up if a neutral ref had been appointed and linesman, the result would have been so much different. Scotland clearly robbed by the officials.

Doubtful that the ball crossed the line for number 4. Three were clearly offside and the goalkeeper fouled for two others. Bit of a fluke result really when you consider Scotland clearly the better team.
