I figured it was time we got back to working on the 1961 Chevrolet BelAir bubbletop sport coupe that we rescued last year. I had rounded up some body parts and glass along with a four door sedan donor car since then so lets make this car that much closer to being roadworthy! As always, thanks for watching!

I’m a 75 year old retired EE and college professor. You and your video’s inspired me to take on a “ Mortske Build”, Found a 2003 one owner GMC Sierra short bed regular cab( my favorite style) on FB market place($2K). Wheel wells needed filled up so back to FB marketplace. 2008 17” GMC alloys with center caps and lug nuts( $160). Got a trifold bed cover (black) $150( FB MP). The truck needed rear fender rust and rocker repair. FB MP again; OEM fender flares and Bushwacker black rocker covers. ($50). Truck is silver; runs and drives great; looks great with the black accents and bigger wheels and tires. Thinking about dropping it down a bit. Great good looking ride. Total cost under $2.5k. “ Doesn’t matter how you are gettin’ it done, long as you’re havin’ fun.” Keep up the great work. Love the bubble top build.

@CubasAutomotive

Got to the window install part of the video, and that was impressive. You made it look so easy and like you knew what you were doing. That's the one thing I have yet to do, install a windshield or back window. I've done everything else there is to do on vehicles, overhauling engines, trannys, difs, transfer cases, pumps, etc. Pretty cool to watch you bring cars back around, keeping old vehicles alive.... and then recording a lot of it in the process. I know how recording, making sure you get decent shots, and the worst part.... editing it all can be so dang time consuming and makes the job at hand much longer to complete (I know you have Chin that helps too though). Excellent job at being consistant. Huge props

So cool to see a project coming together. So hey... an idea for those hinge springs. Take the long end of a ratchet strap and hook it to the back arm of the hinge. Now wrap it towards the back of the hood and go over the top of the hood and around the leading edge. Then hook the ratchet end to the end of the spring you're trying to connect. Then ratchet away. No strain, no stress. Your idea worked too and nobody died.

I'm a former wrecker driver, and the way you hook up the sling is ,first lower the sling into the front bumper ( perferrably) then hook your chains to the frame provisions and attach the other end to the sling provisions then raise it off the ground......... then place the transmission in neutral position. If you're hooking to the rear bumper, you must somehow lock the steering wheel straight. Love that Impala.

1961 Chevy is my dream car, I have had 67-68 Camaro's and a 70 Nova Hot Rods when I was in my 20's. I would like to build at least one more car and I am leaning towards an early 60's Chevy. Something to just put miles on. preferably somewhere warm in the winter. I have had enough fun in the extreme Northern Wisconsin winters. It is great to see the progress, especially, the more work than money concept. Besides, gathering used parts to keep the cost down is the best part of getting these cars back on the road.

Hood spring removal/installation hack: close the hood like halfway, the coils should spread apart. Stick a big flat washer in between a few of the coils. One washer per coil, or whatever you have room for. Now, when you open the hood, the spring won't "spring", and should be floating on the hook mounts, or it might just fall off of them. Keep the washers in there for re-installation. I have also taken new springs and put them in a vise, then use a prybar down the center of the spring to open the coils up and insert the washers. Oh, and that hood-holder-upper, I have the same exact one, and it works great for all kinds of holding needs!

That engine has a lovely sound to it. Crisp and throaty and with a menacing howl when opened up. Any exhaust put on the vehicle has GOT to preserve that essence..... Great to see this old beasty again, mate. Love what you've done to her. It's amazing how just doing a few things to make it more cosmetically appealing can change one's entire attitude to taking it further, eh. I've had a garage full of crap over our winter and all three of my classics sat outside in the front yard.....and got tree muck, bird muck and road grime pasted on them...and so as a reward, they grew me some of the ol' black mould and lichens all over their paint work and even ended up with a thick growth of moss growing in some areas on each car. The spiders had moved in early on as well. Down here, the spiders build webs that can withstand a fairly hefty gale and they kept going until there was a thick and complex mat between the inner fenders, the wheels, the rockers and the ground. Any gaps between the B pillar and the door(s) were likewise webbed shut up the door jamb and across the face of the door. The wing mirrors were near twice their size and the wipers and bumpers likewise. I waited until mid-spring and hit all three with 3000psi from my pressure washer and it was like they had just been parked there again! Suddenly, I wanted to work on them or at least make them look their best so they didn't look like glorified yard art. Out with the buffer and the tyre black and in a few hours they looked grouse. Now I want to get into the two that haven't moved in six months and sort out the reasons I parked them, but with Auckland's weather - even in summer - one cannot predict how long one has dry conditions and they are things I cannot leave half done and nor afford the car to get wet while they are off.....so the garage needs sorted. Problem is that the area I was going to use to put several garage things while I sorted the rest is shortly to become the storage area for the contents of my eldest's flat when she moves home after finishing her studies in a week or so, so I now have my work cut out for me. However, motivation is high because I want to see all three classics on the road again by winter.....even if I then only use them on good days until spring. As to the bubble top, mate - I reckon you try pushing the dents out on that driver's rear quarter (and any other bit that annoys you), get some glass in it, do the floorpans, chuck in some seats - any damn seats - and drive the beast as is until you are inspired to do something further with the panel work.....if you ever feel the need. To be honest, with those blue doors and where the body needs some primer on the driver's quarter, I am so much reminded of the '64 hardtop coupe "Love Machine" that Cheech Marin drove in Up In Smoke. I'd personally like to see you rattle can some satin black over the white on the front clip and do a sort-of bubble-top tribute to that car....at least until it's final exterior look is decided. Wheels have to be Torq Thrust classics (unpolished of course) whether you did an exterior tribute or not. I too love that blue on the doors, but she's have to be a damn good body to paint it all that colour. Flat black looks too much like a blackboard and kids will write all over it with chalk when you park it in town. That roof looks like it would come up well - and parts of the rear end the same, if not a bit patinad. I reckon a satin (semi-gloss) finish would probably tie in well to the weather-worn paint left on it and since she was originally black, it also seems fitting to me that she stays that colour if she was to be tarted up at all. As always, I myself would chuck a manual box in it, but as long as the auto is functioning well, that can be done if and when needed. Same with swapping out seats to something more your liking, but the biggest thing is to get into it and drive it as soon as it can be done. For TRUE motivation, nothing beats being able to drive the car as well as do it up bit by bit as you want it to be. All the best, mate.
