The F-85 coupe, the Starfire, the Dynamic 88, and the '63 Cutlass convertibles were very 60s cool. 😎 This is what was on the road when I was a kid in the 60s! 👍😄

I had a 1963 Oldsmobile Jetfire and a1963 Olds 98. I drove the 98 from Chula Vista ,California to Fort Worth ,Texas and on to Grinnell, Iowa in 1967. The 98 made the trip very pleasant. I stopped for gas and the attendant said "You sure have a nice car!" It was in great shape.

I distinctly remember as a car obsessed child reading a magazine article regarding the 1961 Olds. Apparently, the rear fender treatment was not well received by the public and sales were sluggish as a result. So much so that GM came within an inch of doing a mid- year restyling; something it had never done. However, they waited it out and in 1962 they made a considerable change to the fender tip and taillights.

My first car was a 1957 Oldsmobile 98. Bought it in 1966 from its original owner, an elderly neighbor who had some health problems and couldn't drive anymore. It was gorgeous--two-tone blue and white, in absolutely mint condition--she didn't drive it much; it was nine years old and only had 11,000 miles on it-, drove like a dream, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I paid $300 for it--$250 of which I had to borrow from my dad--kept it for a year and sold it for $600. I've had a lot of cars since then, but you never forget your first one. It was amazing.

The advertising budget for Oldsmobile must have been massive. I would imagine when you got behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile, you knew you were driving a real car. Todays cars are plasticized, delicate devices that require pampering and frequent trips to the repair shop.

As an English major, I must take note of the Ninety Eight's TV ads. The car's official name is supposed to be spelled out and not hyphenated nor enumerated, as classic car writers are wont to do. Any former Oldsmobile marketing folks are welcome to comment. Written in love for a beautiful automobile. 💟
@harpersferry59
@harpersferry59 7 лет назад
tamapalagi My bad. Learned about the Ninety-Eight's illustrious history after I posted. But I still think Olds was a bit schizophrenic in their print ads for its flagship car; see the magazine ads on eBay for the 70s' Ninety-Eights. 🚗 I'm an aficionado from way back, so I spell it out. 😉 BTW, I was teasing, and it broke my heart when Olds downsized them from 1985 till sending Ninety-Eight to car heaven in 1996 - about 8 years before Olds itself met the same fate. May she RIP.

Most interesting fins ever 61 Olds upside down on rear fender?
@rizzlerazzleuno4733
@rizzlerazzleuno4733 5 лет назад
The stylists were having too much fun at GM in the fifties and sixties. It was the "jet age" and nearly all cars had some sort of jet and rocket styling cues. It was if they thought the cars could fly. No one could have predicted correctly in 1961 what cars would look like in 2019, and the demise of Olds would seem impossible.

The scenes of the 1962 World's Fair and the Space Needle epitomized America's optimism as we entered the Space Age! We had a young, dynamic new President and he promised that we would be going to the moon by the end of the decade! And the cars of the era reflected all of it in their new Space Age inspired designs! America was the Icon of world power, anything was possible in this day and age! And then it changed. in an instant the world lost it's optimism when JFK was assassinated and we were cheated out of the promise that he symbolized. I was only 7 years old but I vividly remember my father's reaction that day as it occurred on live television. And everything changed. It was palatable for weeks later. America lost it's innocence for the 2nd time in 20 years since WWII. I don't think we ever really recovered as a nation. 🤔

@kirbywaite1586 2 года назад
I think the mpg-s were considerably higher.
@kirbywaite1586
@kirbywaite1586 2 года назад
@@rizzlerazzleuno4733 What is considered economical is based entirely on the price of gas. It wasn't until 1973 that anyone was concened at all. I think you'll find that full sized cars in the 50s and 60s consumed somewhat less fuel per mile than you are stating. Remember the "Mobil Economy Runs"? It was during the 1970s that large cars were recieving such low mpg figures. But, by the time the Ford Crown Vic was discontinued it was getting better mileage than the Ford Pinto had been. The now gone Lincoln Towncar is well known for getting phenomenal MPGs. However, there are limits to how much energy can be derived from a gallon of gasoline.
@kirbywaite1586
@kirbywaite1586 2 года назад
@@rizzlerazzleuno4733 I didn't say the price of gasoline had anything to do with how far the car will go. However, higher octane gasoline is more resistant to compression so that does constitute a factor in engine performance. What I said was nobody was particularly concerned about fuel "econony" until gasoline became so expensive. It's all relative and based on what you can afford. A big house costs more to heat than a small one. Nobody (yet) has said that houses must be smaller in order to conserve heating oil. Although with this current administration anything is possible I suppose. Generally speaking, cars of the 50s and 60s, as yet unencumbered by the extra weight of crash resistant structures and bumpers and devoid of the pollution controls that rob engines of their power got better MPGs than cars of the 1970s. The smaller V8s in particular were quite economical to operate. When it comes to your earlier disparaging remarks about automatic transmissions, it's worth mentioning that the GM Turbo-hydramatic was so well built and so well performing that for decades Rolls Royce purchased them from GM to incorporate into Rolls and Bentley models rather than manufacturing their own.

There is very little real metal in cars anymore .and no real beautiful chrome decorations .

Early 60s were pretty conservative for GM. it isn't until 66 that the real styles came out. less conservative, more innovative. the 98 in 1961 was just one step under a Cadillac. yet look at the 61 olds 98 in the ads! The starfire ragtop was a far better looking car than the 98!
