From August 16th 1962, USAC stock cars at the Milwaukee Mlle. Paul Goldsmith, Curtis Turner and Don White survive a ten car pile-up on lap 3 that eliminated AJ Foyt and Eddie Sachs among others. The Associated Press reported attendance at 16,863 (which is interesting because it looks larger than that).

I lived in Milwaukee and was at that race with my father who sold Pontiacs and was a Paul Goldsmith fan. I was too until Don White drove Dodge Chargers, then I was a fan of his. Grateful my father took me to my 1st USAC stock car race in1961 at the Milwaukee Mile. I've been a USAC, ASA, NASCAR fan ever since that year.

With the exception of the lack of understanding the obvious need for better safety (such as the open pits/etc) it was a wonderful era to have been a kid interested in stock car racing. The race-prepped cars were like the ones you saw on the streets! I used to love ABC's "Wide World Of Sports" when it was a stock car race being featured. Fireball Roberts was one of my favorite drivers back then.

Wow, no wall at all between the pits and the track! What could possibly go wrong?

The red headed lady emotionally envolved with the race; had to be one of the drivers wives.
