Gosh this old Sox + Martin Mercury just LOOKS like the way a drag car should....doesn't it? Perfect rake on it. Gorgeous paint scheme. Brings back chills to me thinking about Ronnie Sox sitting in that car....banging gears like few ever could. So thankful that this new owner has taken such care and pride in this old warrior. Wonder if you were to get him aside sometime, away from anybody else....and asked him "have you ever felt that Ronnie was around you at all when you worked on or drove this car" how he might respond?
Man that was hard to watch. My first car was a 64 comet cyclone 351 W ( replaced the tired 289) 4spd Toploader and a 9in rear. My second car was a 1963 Savoy 440 auto...
I've been a drag racing fan and participant since 1967...age 13. But THIS is what is wrong with drag racing in many ways. Did you hear him say..."Been here 12 hours....just now getting to the staging lanes.....first pass". That just ain't right.
It's the lack of cars like this that is killing the NHRA. Only speaking for myself, but watching a drag race that lasts less than 4 seconds does nothing for me. Drivers today in the Pro cars are simply driving a computer which controls everything.
The good ole' days were things like the modified production cars. Several other sportsman classes were great also but MP was just high rpm and 4 speed mayhem.
