I wonder how many reading this will have no clue what you’re referring to. I remember as a kid, my parents talking about some of the early movie, stars and entertainers. I had no idea who they were talking about until much later in life. Thank you for watching.

Wow , this takes me way back to 1963 when I discovered Hootenanny and the Chad Mitchell Trio !!!! I was obsessed with Chad Mitchells voice and I still am. Havnt listened to him in a while, about time to bring the cd's out again.

Lovely! Most of my ABC Hootenanny memories involve the Mitchell Trio, Josh White, Judy Henske, Judy Collins, the limeliters and the brothers four and even bigger ensembles. This was a treat! Bob Gibson before the beard!. I remember reading Sing Out magazine around that time, and it found a lot of humor in some newspaper gossip column speculating that "Joan Baez was dating the head of the Gibson Guitar Company," apparently conflating her duets with Bob Gibson and Bob Dylan... And I'm surprised they didn't get Vince Martin into the act!

I remember watching this show a few times back then...the folk music fad didn't last long after the Beatles hit the USA in early 1964. I was surprised to see the audience members singing the theme song, meaning that many of them must've been fans of the show and watched it often enough to know the lyrics.

I have never heard of Joe Mapes before I discovered this film. I love her voice. There are very very few episodes of this show available. I forgot the reason why but I think it had to do with the fire. The entire library of episodes was destroyed other than a few that have been sent out and not returned. Lucky us. I also like Leon Bill Blair, his song little boxes is addictive. Thank you for watching

An interesting moment in time. Urban folk music was at its zenith, then the British Invasion changed everything. This Hootenanny show got canceled as a result of the changing music scene. It was replaced by the show Shindig.

Yes it has been reported that all are lost however after doing this for 20 years I find that a lot of things that are have been reported as lost or nonexistent but if you think about how many films were sent out and not returned to the originator it is always possible that at least on or part of one or two episodes still exist this was found on Craigslist. Folks rarely have a clue what treasures they hold when it comes to old film. Thank you for watching.

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology Thanks! Wow, that's a great craigslist find! I always heard ABC erased all their tapes of the show after the reruns were done, I guess somebody must have kinescoped this one or snuck out with a tape.

All of the shows were kinescoped and I believe my guess would be that somebody on the show asked for this duplicate personally. I’ve had a lot of films that actually belonged to the Players that took part in the film.

The last group of square young people! Rich kids from the upper middle class. They were all about that collegiate culture. There was at that time only a little Rock n roll. You had soul music, girl groups, James Brown, Motown. Then came the Beatles! Three years of the British Invasion! Wow! Later, hard rock. Songs with “meaning.” Drugs, Vietnam, the generation gap. The hawks and the doves. Burning draft cards. Race riots. Campus riots. Woodstock. Watergate. Nixon resigned. The end. It was a musical renaissance-1956-1969. The era was dead by 1975. Pop music filled the airwaves. Then…. Disco!! Yuck! New music came in the 1980s.

Back in the days when The ABC Television Network, way before the likes of Woke Disney, who brought the TV network in 1996, was once a great TV network with top-rated TV shows suited for good family viewing, especially with music variety shows like "HOOTENANNY" (1963-64), which focused on great Folk music, once the heart of American culture, which you won't find anywhere on what's left of Primetime TV in our current century! "HOOTENANNY" ran for 28 episodes and was eventually replaced by "SHINDIG!" (1964-1966).
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 2 месяца назад
Unfortunately, two things doomed "HOOTENANNY" in its second season: the rise of British rock {especially The Beatles}......and the fact that the show was scheduled opposite "JACKIE GLEASON AND HIS AMERICAN SCENE MAGAZINE" on CBS {which attracted more viewers}.....and a military drama, NBC's "THE LIEUTENANT" {produced by Gene Roddenberry}. Those remaining viewers who watched "HOOTENANNY" weren't enough to convince ABC to renew it for a third season.

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology Actually I never realized that the term "folk music" is so generic it can mean anything. It's any music without electric guitars. It also shows how a fad can catch on with a college audience by forcing it on them. The show didn't last very long, and the folk music passed away rather quickly.
