There are two cars that are timeless in their design. The Volvo 1800 and the Aston Martin DB5. I told my wife if I could ever afford to own both of these beauties I would gladly get rid of the two cars we now have. She asked which car would be hers. "Your car would be whatever you buy", I replied. "These are mine". She then suggested I get a camper as well.
I recall sitting in one of these. I am six feet tall. The cockpit felt like it had been custom made for me. Everything felt perfectly placed. Visibility of the instruments was excellent. I cannot sit in a car today and have the steering wheel where it feels comfortable and maintain an unobstructed view of the speedometer.
I'm surprised that this car isn't on more people's radars. What's not to like about it? It's a genuinely beautiful car that can be mistaken for an Aston Martin that comes with Volvo's legendary reliability and doesn't cost as much as a house.
Beautiful example! I've owned 16 Volvos and restored a half dozen more for others - never owned an 1800, but restored 2 - love those cars! (BTW, the 122S, the 142S, the 780, the S60R all beautiful machines... but I'm a bit partial to Volvos... ;) )
I agree 100% and I am from Sweden. No other Swedish produced car can compete and there has been almost 100 car manufacturers in Sweden including Saab, Jössecar, Indigo and Koenigsegg.
Well, beauty is just a matter of personal taste really. It might bee the sportiest car they made at the time and it is good looking, Absolutely!! But the PV 444 and 544 is a really good looking car as well and the lines are similar to the 1946 Ford and the 120 series Amazon is`nt exactly square either. I own a 1972 142... now that´s square compared to the earlier models, but I find that car very well balanced in it´s lines for the days and I love it. Depends on what one calls beautiful. Very subjective. I find the 1800 beautiful, but Also the 122 and 240 - I even like the P544 to be strangely beautiful - all for different reasons😎
You really can't beat 60's car design for style whether it be from Europe, Australia, Japan or America. Just about every 60's car now is collectible. In 60 years time are future generations going to be excited about a current Volvo (or anything else?) Doubtful.
Actually, the top section, the passenger part always looked a tad small compared to the rest of the car. I would have raised the top a bit, perhaps swept the rear window a bit farther like a Jag maybe. It has horrible headroom in fact
The most beautiful Volvo ever made? Not really true? Think the Volvo C70 coupe and design by Ian Callum, UK. At that time designer of the Aston Martin. We can observe the Aston 'look' if we watch the C70 from the rear and at an angel.
That was what my Jensen Cars history book says. Crazy that my two loves are Jensens and Volvos... and I didn't know for quite a few years about their relationship.
@@mrmullah6781 It would be nice to actually talk to the designers and see what they think. I have a 1800ES and will be putting a 'modern' treatment to it, in particular having the roof line slope down and maybe pinch in like the c30. And the body is going on a C4 corvette chassis, and either a 2.9 or 4.4 volvo rwd powerplant.
@@murraymadness4674 sounds cool and a lot of work😮. Take a look at the Cyan they have done a perfect job with modernizing the front. May be you can try to contact the Cyan engineers?
