1965 Alfa Romeo SS - Petrolicious Founder's Alfa Problem

This week we take a ride in Petrolicious founder and CEO Afshin Behnia’s personal Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale through the urban grid that makes up the roadways of Los Angeles.
Mr. Drive Tastefully himself opens up to reveal what propels his passion for the marque: an almost dire desire to research, learn, seek out, collect, and-most importantly-drive vintage Alfa Romeos. But Afshin wasn’t always an Alfista, confessing his attraction toward the Italian marque wasn’t his first love.
“I was always into the more obvious cars-BMWs, Porsches, Ferraris,” admits Afshin, “I didn't really discover the marque [Alfa Romeo] in its true sense until, I think, I was twenty or so.” Shortly after acquiring his first though, an ‘86 Spider, the ownership experience piqued his curiosity for the carmaker, and sparked the beginning of a long love affair with the manufacturer’s illustrious past.
“Naturally, as with anything, if I get a new toy or if I discover a new hobby, etcetera, I kind of get obsessed and want to know as much about it as possible,” Afshin states in your typical gearhead logic. What really lured him in was the rich history and significance in motorsports, noting, “The lineage that it has, the models, and the people who raced for it and things like that, it just blew my mind. I said, ‘How the hell did I not know about Alfa Romeo before this?’”
Of course, it didn’t take long for him to discover the extensive and undeniably impressive catalogue of beautiful classics Alfa has archived in its portfolio. The diversity in design caught Afshin’s attention on top of the racing endeavors: “All the top design houses from Zagato, to Pininfarina, to Bertone, to Ghia-they’ve all had some very interesting Alfa Romeos that they've designed. It was like discovering this whole world that I felt silly for not having known about before.”
In the process of discovering and admiring decades’ worth of Alfa automobiles, he learned of the Giulia Sprint Speciale, and the slippery Bertone-designed body paired with the Giulia running gear remains his favorite to-date. After the better portion of a decade spent keeping tabs on the market and perusing classifieds in search of an SS to call his own, Afshin noticed a spike in value: it was the time to buy.
After finally obtaining his beloved Gardenia White Sprint Speciale, Afshin says with a knowing smile, “From there, it went downhill very fast.” With an 8C, Giulietta Spider, and the SS in the stable, Afshin optimistically believed he’d be content with his treasured trio-that was, until he met a man who believed there was never enough Alfa.
Befriending fellow Alfaholic Manuel Leon Minassian saw Afshin’s collection grow considerably over the years. Laughing, Afshin blames Manuel for the similar but unique Milano machines parked in the Petrolicious headquarters-all twelve of them.

For those of you commenting, "Too much talking, not enough car," you are missing the point. Yes the cinematography is top notch (as it always is), but what makes Petrolicious special are the people in the films, not just the cars. It's the stories of the people the complete the cinematic experience with a story. People are what make the automotive community unlike any other, and for Petrolicious to make these videos every week without charging you truly shows that these people true automotive enthusiasts and genuinely good people. If you can't appreciate the founder's story as much as the car, I'm sorry that you can't relate to true, automotive passion.

I have your same problem! My father started years ago with a 1968 Spider Veloce. He always told me about how perfect Alfas were in the past and about how they were just better than anything else. So I started to search for a Spider which was his dream car. We found one and the prices were already starting to raise. We went to see it and we just bought it. We passed a lot of weeks together fixing the car since it stood for many years in a garage. But after we got everything fixed and I had my first short trip in the car I just fell in love! I started to read some books and watch videos about Alfas and that's when I got infected with this beatiful Alfa disease! After about 5 years of searching I bought my dream car in January of this year:) a silver 1970 GT 1300 Scalino. I'm totally restoring it and it will take a few more months probably but I just feel so good everytime I look at this stunning car. Thanks for this beatiful video! Keep up posting Alfas, I really love it! Best channel on youtube!

devon 7 thank you! We are really enjoying it! I bought the car in january and we are working almost all togheter on it. My brother is now also infected. I hope he will also buy an Alfa for himself soon. What cafe racer did you prepared?

We just finished a 78 CB750 which i had laying around for 30+ years. i have a Ducati,GSXR 2 dirt bikes and i just bought a 76 CB750 Super Sport for myself to start a cafe racer ! Currently i have a 81 GTV6 and a 88 Milano Verde. I also strayed and own a 87 Lotus turbo Esprit and a 70' TVR Vixen. I am an Alfaholic for the transaxel Alfas. Probably had about 20 Alfas up till now . ( nobody ever has just 1 Alfa at any given time). What state are you located?
@rmr5184
@rmr5184 7 лет назад
devon 7 wow!! Your collection is really impressive!!! Bothe the bikes and the cars. You know what Alfas and Lotus share? They are both cars with a lot of character! Last week I picked up the treated and freshly painted GT chassi from the workshop where it has been for the last few months. As soon as we find some time we will start with the reasembling. Since we are not mechanics it will probably take until the end of this year to complete the car. I would really like to have it perfect! Nevertheless I prefer to take some more time and do it well rather than just fixing it. I will never sell the car so I don't need to keep a timeschedule.

Petrolicious, thanks once again for succeeding so well at putting across what the passion for cars really envolves as a whole: the colours, the specific models, sounds, design and the general passion for the automotive world and community. Please never stop doing such a great job at illustrating this and keep the videos coming, I'm sure I am not alone when I say we will pleasurably be here to watch. If someone tells me cars are just machines, I will definitely look back to your videos so as to prove them that these machines are much more than about going from one place to another.

I’m surprised at my self for never ever hearing of the Alfa Romeo SS. This is my first time to see and hear one in this video. What a seductive design, the curves in the body just want to pull you in. But then again Alfa never ceases to surprise me. Just imagine driving this beauty in its heyday when it rolled out of the factory in the early ‘60s. What a sophisticated car for its time that still looks relevant on the road today.

You always post great videos on your channel, but this episode is really special. As one who was born and raised in Milano, the city of Alfa Romeo, I can only appreciate a true Alfista! My first Alfa was a Sprint Veloce from the '70's and I had a few other Alfa's in my life. I miss them all, no modern car lives in you with the same passion! My regards to the "Milanese" in your family... I know she loves Alfas, too! Cheers, Corrado.

My Sprint Speciale ownership amazingly parallels Afsin`s, when I bought my first Alfa years ago (`74 GTV) I was curious about the marque`s history and bought several books and discovered the SS in a little b&w photo. It took awhile to realize the SS wasn`t a show car but an actual production model. The hunt was on ! and it also took quite some time to find an actual car as there were only a handful ever imported ,several years passed and I finally found a good one that was looking for a loving home so I bought mine sight unseen as well. He`s also right that they become an addiction, ALFA , Always Looking For Another !

As usual, great cinematography and music background. But the most important point in this clip is that, fortunately, there are people who understand the true Alfa essence. Everyone who has at some point owned an Alfa is most certainly infected from the Alfa virus. And this is stated from a guy who has a family history with Alfas streching from the old Giulia Super to the latest European Giulietta. Keep the fantastic job you deliver and don't forget: A.L.F.A. = Always Looking For Another. Warm greetings from an Alfista in Greece. Oo=v=oO

I first tested a Alpha in 1969. What a revelation. The incredible lightness of being comes to mind. It was a 1959 spyder, and was even lighter than my 356A Porsche. I had never seen a 5 speed transmission. The little 1300 cc engine revved so willingly, the suspension had a fair amount of body roll but never let go. I found a Sprint Special ( as pictured in the vid) for $2500, but it was beyond my means at the time..enchanting cars. No wonder he has a problem.

I'm glad that he did a piece on his Alfa finally. I also bought an 86 Veloce just to tide me over until I could afford a TR6. The Alfa has totally sucked me in, and I took the car way further than I had originally intended. Now that I have a TR6, I can't get rid of the Alfa. It sounds and drives way too nice. Older Alfas like Afshin's will always be out of my reach, but there's a few made later on that are withing my grasp, and at some point I'll find an early GTV.......
