The level of intricate trim on this car is amazing. The paint quality is first-rate. Just a beautiful car. The seats look very comfortable. AMC automobiles did not get the respect they deserved. To build a car today with all the trim features this has would cost a fortune. Thank you Lou for bringing this classic to us. Just amazing especially with all the miles he has put on it.

Marlin is a beautiful car. I remember how thrilled I was when I saw it at the AMC new car pre-show in 1964. It was an employee only event. In subsequent years I was very excited about the AMX/Javelin!

Fully agreed. I wish they could have held on a little longer with Jeep and Eagle successfully predicting the car market of today (awd and suv’s all over the place). Mine has been an AMC family since 1976 (when Mom bought a Pacer). Dad bought a Hornet in ‘77, and Mom replaced her Pacer with a new Concord in ‘78 (which we still have, fully restored, as a summer fun car).

I WANT another one! The very first car my dad bought me, in 1973 was a 1967 AMC Marlin. It had options like the factory 8-track and air conditioning. This one was a brown color and didn't have the vinyl top. There was nothing like spring and fall rolling down all the windows and driving the 45 miles to my dentist in another town with the 8-track blaring. I was 16 and absolutely LOVED that car. I drove it a couple years, then my dad decided he wanted me to have a 4-wheel drive for the winter, sold my beloved Marlin, and got me a Chevy K-5 Blazer (orange and white). I hated that thing and have pined since then for my Marlin. This was a great episode, makes me wish I still had mine.

AMC deserved so much more respect than they got back then. Had GM introduced this car, it would have sold in numbers much closer to the Mustang. Because it was different and it was from the little car company, this car was seen as "odd" instead of "in."

At least we've finally progressed beyond the ol "AMC bought the 327 from Chevy. They never really made any motors themselves. They shouldn't have had "Motors" in their name."
@kotjmf1968
@kotjmf1968 4 года назад
@@KC9UDX that is a really ridiculous statement. First off, it is an ENGINE, not a motor. Get a grip on vocabulary. AMC used Nash engines until their own V8 ENGINES were designed. AMC stopped using Packard V8s in the 1956 model year. The 1st design were 287 and 327 cubic inches. The 2nd design was introduced in the 1966 model year and was much more efficient and lighter weight. That design was the 290 and 343 cubic inches. In 1968 the 390 came out. In 1970 the displacements were increased to 304 and 360, the 401 was introduced in 1971. Look it up. You really need to stop repeating garbage that morons make up!

AMC cars from the 1960s were amazingly comfortable! I had a 1966 Rambler American 220 wagon (cheapest AMC wagon that year - my very first car purchased for $300.) and it rode like you were on a cloud. I have never since owned a car that rode so smoothly.

Beautiful car, if somewhat strange. These Marlins were the wrong answer to ponycars for AMC or Rambler in the 60's. Studebaker got it right earlier with the car that was built untill 2007, the Avanti, yet also wasn't a commercial success. AMC did get it right later with the Javelin, for a short time. The problem was basing the Marlin on the larger cars, especially the Ambassador, instead of the smaller American. Too big, and ungainly, the 67 was the last and worst with stacked headlights, yet it's my favorite, but then I'm an Ambassador fan. Amazing this is such a high milage car, looks great. Odd headrests only on the passenger side. This was back in the day when it was considered a comfort option, not a safety option, and few cars carried them. Beautiful color, great dedicated owners who lovingly keep this beauty going, kudos to them.

When American Motors hit their stride (FINALLY!), they hit really hard. The '67 Marlin was even more impressive from a design standpoint: It incorporated the very cool Ambassador grill. I've only ever seen one in real life (other than in the dealer's showroom when they first came out). They must cost a small---or large---fortune, IF one could even find one in good condition so many decades later. This car looks pretty modern, even by today's standards, tho its look is very different from cars in 2020. Thanks for the posting!

I would have been fifteen years old in 1965. I lived in Milwaukee, still do, and remember there was a Marlin that parked up the street from my parents house. I could not believe seeing this car, I knew AMC hit one out of the park on this one, well at least I thought so. My dad bought a 66 Pontiac Tempest the next year. It was a magic period for cars back then. I remember walking a few blocks to the Plymouth dealer to see the Fury Turbine powered car. That color on that Marlin... wow. The Ambassador in 1967 I think, had this violet thing going on with the 343 CID V-8, The Ambassador was a great car too. It really is sad to have watched what happened to AMC. They should NEVER have got into bed with Renault, neither should have Nissan in 2000

My parents bought a new Rambler, [AMC] 1962 station wagon. It was two tone white top and blue bottom with a luggage rack on the roof. For some reason my dad opted for the OHV straight six, but it was more than sufficient to haul all of us five kids from Seattle to Disneyland in Anaheim California regularly. It was extremely well built. I don't know if it featured uni-body construction. We had to wait a while to get the car for some unknown reason. The seating arrangement could handle seven passengers. My brother and I always sat in the back seat facing rearward. Today I think that could be extremely dangerous in a rear end collision!

The engine in this car was introduced in 1956 albeit in a 250 CID form. It was offered in the Nash Ambassador Special and the Hudson Hornet Special each of which was actually built on the 114.25 inch wheelbase of the Statesman and Wasp models. In 1957 the 327 CID version was standard in the Rambler Rebel (limited production) as well as the Nash Ambassador and Hudson Hornet (both in their last year of production). I had a '65 Classic convertible with this 327 four barrel and found the engine to be smooth, quiet and powerful.

The 287/327 Rambler(AMC) V8s are the smoothest/quietest engines you will ever come across. They were designed in the mid 50s and were constructed using old fashioned "thick wall" casting. As a result, the engines are very heavy but incredibly durable. You really have to hear/feel one to believe it. With minimal care, they will run forever.

Phil Preston actually, the fastback design was used first by Chrysler on the Valiant based Barracuda in 64 (A car you should try to feature Lou. Very under appreciated). Also the fastback design was nothing new by the time the 60's rolled through. It was a very popular design cue during the Art Deco era, and many prewar cars. Nash and Packard come to mind. Also my personal fav of the 50's: the Maserati A6.

Actually the 327 was placed in production in 1956 for the 1957 Nash Ambassador, Hudson Hornet and Rambler Rebel. The first post-merger V8 produced by AMC was the 250 CID which was used in 1956 Ambassador Special, Hornet Special and Rambler V8 models. For 1955 all Nash/Hudson V8s were purchased from Packard (S-P Corp.)

Complaints were the nose was too short and the roof too long. The first and second year Marlins were based on the Rambler Classic, then in the final year ('67) AMC used the Ambassador platform, giving the front end a longer look. But it was too little, too late. The car was discontinued after that. Good job, Lou! An interesting piece of automotive history.
