1966 Datsun Roadster | Minimal Safety, Maximum Fun 

I just bought a 1966 1600 roadster from a family that owned it for 40 years. The service record was insane. I had to drive it back from los oso to LA. Such a fun car

Always enjoyed Lynn's reviews, but she's got a lot more "street cred" with me now, because of the 1600, and the fact that she wrenches. There's an "R" there guys, the word is WRENCHES.

I love my 66. I really need to get the interior done but I hate the thought of it being apart and unable to drive so I’ve been putting it off. When I bought mine it already had a 5 speed in it. Makes those turnpike cruises at 80mph no big deal. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this video. I saw Lyn driving the Datsun yesterday right where I live in Costa Mesa. I love seeing other Roadsters out there. I’m planning on driving down PCH today with mine. Maybe I’ll see some other Datsuns :)

In 68 i bought a 65 datsun fairlady for $1700 that was 1968 dollars so 14k today isnt too far out of line It was my first sportscar and i had a blast with it.it had some real knockoffs on it. 52 years later at 75 im driving a 91 miata you never get it out of your blood

I used to own a 1967 1600. Loved that car! One thing I found out is that it'll "turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change"! One time I was driving on a boulevard @ 35 MPH and came to an intersection where i wanted to turn. Didn't even hit the brakes, just turned the steering wheel 180 degrees and whipped around the corner! I concur about the hydraulic clutch though, had to replace the master cylinder (but not the slave).

I'm a guy who use to own a Z, but I preferred calling her the Fairlady, kinda like what pilots do. Also, proof that the Fairlady is the GTR's older brother.

I currently own a 1966 Datsun 1600 and it's definitely a fun car to drive. My family is really into these cars, my parents had 2 a 1600 and a 67.5 2000, my oldest daughter has a 66 also and my son has 70 1600. When i bought mine it was in a 1000 pieces!! I put it all back together myself and even painted it myself. These cars are so easy to work on it's crazy!!

I have a 64 Datsun 1500 and i love it! Got it for 2k. I Put some work in and now i see it worth over 40k 😆😱

A few disagreements: I owned a 67 1/2 Datsun 1600 (13,000 to 75,000 on the odometer). It was more safe than you give it credit for. Mine was hit from behind by an 70's Olds 88 at about 30 mph. As expected my Datsun crumpled, BUT it safely folded accordion style so the passenger tub's rear trim was not even bent! And they were able to repair my Datsun and I got years more enjoyment out of it. Rollover? I always wished I could afford a rollbar, but it was so close to the ground (and I was so young) I didn't worry much. (ps, I'm an engineer, we think about those things) Safety: My 67 1/2 already had the head restraints, 3 point seat belts, and dual brake master cylinder that other cars wouldn't get till the following year. The dual brakes saved my bacon twice as the tire guys would grab the front brake line when taking my tire off and several days later the tire rim would cut thru the brake line and stopping distances got really long! But it would stop. Seating: Before the days of required seat belt wearing I carried 3 friends on the back bench (it came padded), so the roadster holds 5 WITH the top up! My younger brother was riding back there as we took him to school on a cold Chicago winter morning. He decided he needed to see out the side convertible window, so he cleared the snow off by punching his fist thru the frozen plastic. Power: Those are 96 Japanese horses. My 76 German horsepower Porsche, also weighing 2000 lbs, had equivalent acceleration. My 1600 hit 101 mph with the top down. The Porsche got to 109. Comfort?: We took the Datsun on our honeymoon, Illinois to Florida, 3 days Chicago to Orlando. The seats were fine, of course our bodies were only 23 then. The next car's seats (Porsche) were definitely more comfortable on long trips. Speedometer cables: Mine snapped every June. I think it was from all the snow and salt in Illinois. The first time was right after I purchased it. So I drove my 1600 by feel, not speed. As I went thru the curves on an exit ramp off I 57, I was startled by the tires squealing FROM the GTO that was trying to follow me. After that, and I put radials on, I would pass a Camaro just before the exit and if they took the bait I usually could get them to spin out trying to keep up with my 1600 thru the curves. Thank you for an enjoyable video. It brought back many memories of my little red roadster. Jim

Lyn is awesome! Her dream ride is also mine... a new Bollinger (they've got toggle switches too!). Also, riding a 250cc motorcycle, (like my Suzuki TU250X), gives lots of the same pleasure as this Datsun... you can ring it out, have a blast, and not break any laws.

Excellent presentation by you both of a fun car. Drove a friend's 1600 often in the '90s. Pure joy, and smile inducing. As you stated, about the only change I thought would be nice would have been a 5th gear! Love how you've kept it fairly stock, yet not some pristine museum piece. Glad to see it enjoyed. Cool jacket, Monteros are sweet too: I own a rebadged version sold by Dodge, the Raider.

Had a 1966 Datsun 1600 in 1970. Simple, bulletproof, fun. Drove it from NM to NYC without a problem. Traded it for the second 240Z to hit town.

Owned one that I purchased in the 1980s: it was fun and fast and the only thing I didn't like about the car was the top was almost impossible to lower or raise.

I have a 69 2000 roadster. I have also owned a 1600. Fun cars but the 2000 is a whole different animal than the 1600 and earlier 1500. Even a stock build with SU carburetors make it much more serious of a car. Every time I get it out on a road trip and out in areas where I can shift at appropriate RPM I liken it to climbing into a little single engine fighter and heading off to war! hahahaha It can be scary as hell to drive in modern traffic though. Its just like being on motorcycle. Head on a swivel lest you wind up pancaked by an SUV!

Love my 70 Roadster only wish I owned a 67. Like you Lynn I never saw a rodster but when I did it was way cooler than any other roadster I saw. (Or could afford) so I had to get one.

Desperately wanted one when I was in college but had to settle for a '63 Dodge Dart. Some years later, though, I owned a 240Z and loved it dearly for years. Only gave it up to a former girlfriend when the relationship crashed. As for Lyn's participation, the more the better.

Fantastic vlog that brought back fond memories of my brother's Datsun 2000. The good news and the bad news are both that they don't build 'em like that anymore, lol.

Enjoyed watching. A 1969 Datsun 1600 in the same colour was my first car. Loved it - but in our northern climate in Canada the body rust was extreme within four years.

Great video. I owned a 1967 Datsun 1600 SPL 311, bought it in 1973 used, for $550. Had a blast with it. Damn, someone crashed into it and totaled it. Wouldn't mind finding another one.

The Datsun Fairlady was introduced in 1963 with a 1300cc engine. That engine was stroked to 1400cc in 1964. 1965 was the last year of the Datsun "Fairlady" where Datsun stroked the engine to 1500cc and it became known to be quite unreliable. 1966 was the first year of the Datsun " Roadster" and the new short stroke 1600cc engine. The 66 was the first year the Roadster was deemed a "sports car" by Datsun, and introduced front disk brakes (branded Dunlop as they were still under patent write). The fact that this video says this car has all drum brakes and is branded a Fairlady means it is a pre-1966 Fairlady. I question the VIN plate as the engine code has obviously been re-stamped and probably pulled out of a 66 ( lots of them ended up in junk yards for pickers to rampage). Known as the most over designed two seater sports car ever, the Roadsters went on to dominate SCCA racing (Datsun owned SCCA during the 70's) with the 2 liter Roadster. The 2000 was designed with the first production overhead cam engine sold in the USA. It also was the first 5 speed "overdrive" production gear box and the first padded dash in the USA. The 2 liter could hit 100 miles per hour in third gear! Designed to beat the Austin Healey 3000's on the track, it could take down Corvettes. All the Fairlady's and Roadster's were pretty much sold on the West Coast, in 1972 you could drive into a Datsun dealership in Georgia and the salesman would say "Whats That". Little known fact, in the early to mid sixty's Datsun was trying to make headway into the US market, so they were available in three colors, Red, White and Blue (smart marketing).

My dad restored a 1947 Stinson 108-3 when I was a young kid in the early 1970s, and we restored a Waco S.205 in the 1990s. Bringing classic beauties back to the road or the air is hugely satisfying. Well done!

Ive had 2 of these 2000 datsuns including a super rare 67 1/2 (one of 250 sent to usa). You might be able to get much better performance shoes for the brakes
