You can read our full interview with Scott at petrolicious.co.... We also encourage you to check out Scott's own site, RoadsterRoadtri..., which features a treasure trove of photographs and personal memories from his trip.
The average American driver puts 13,500 miles per year on their car. Mr. Scott Fisher of Las Vegas, Nevada, added that many to the odometer of his 1967 Datsun Roadster in just the first three months of a recently-completed road trip that ultimately took him to forty-eight U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces. By the time Scott pulled into his garage in Las Vegas for the first time in eight months, he had covered 37,850 miles of the North American countryside.
Deciding that an extended road trip was the best way to unwind after sixteen years of business stress, Scott briefly considered a modern ride but opted instead to entrust his travels to a 46 year-old Datsun that he would come to call "The Optimist."
"What you're driving on your road trip will be a huge part of the experience," noted Scott in a January 2014 interview with Petrolicious, "so I decided that a less all-around and less capable vehicle that had considerably more character and exuberance would be a much better choice."
Aside from a few mechanical hiccups, the Roadster gobbled up the miles like a champ, carrying Scott along rough logging roads, over mountain passes, and through Times Square -- all with the top down, of course.
The car, says Scott, "feels more like a faithful dog that may raise an eyebrow to some of your more harebrained plans, but will totally give 100% to make it happen. I try not to anthropomorphize too much, but the car is an optimist, and it's the perfect companion for a trip like this."
Even a run-in with a deer in Utah -- from which, Scott points out, the Datsun emerged bruised but victorious -- couldn't slow the Roadster as it barreled through the final miles of Scott's adventure. Now at home in Scott's garage, the little Optimist has certainly earned its upcoming restoration.

Modern day cars will never age as well as this classic.

I think overall you’re right but the 05-09 Mustangs and the C5 Corvette will be the exceptions that age quite well.

Love it when people tell me I "cant" daily drive my Z or think itll be unreliable or expensive to own. Cheap to buy, cheap to own, cheap to insure, easy to work on, tons of fun, decent fuel economy etc. No distractions, just you, the car, and the road.

I once had a 240z with a bit over 250hp that I daily drove, only really had to adjust the valves every two months to keep everything tip top. Have a Datsun 2000 in the garage with sr20 now torn apart drove that back and forth to Oregon, California, and Arizona year after year.

Precious memories. Thank you. I had a 67-1/2 1600. Never left me stranded up and down the west coast. I hope it landed in the right hands. Been 37 years since I've seen it. What a great car. I traded my Chev truck for it it a stop light. Followed he guy home and we traded pink slips and I drove home the roadster.

Just picked up a Datsun 1600 for full restoration. It will be years of hard work, as the car is pretty raw, but I'll keep watching this video to know what the end of the restoration will bring!

Awesome stuff man! I bought a 300zx for restoration, and it was brutally handled by previous owners. When I bought it, it had 9 litres of oil in the engine, when it only requires just over 3. The previous owners did not even give it a simple oil change. Now it runs awesome and I use it for driving in my videos :D

Back in the college days, a friend and I drove my Datsun 1600 Roadster from Las Cruces, NM to New York City, top down all the way. Never a hiccup, used one quarts of oil. Great car. Sold it to another friend in 1970 in order to buy the second 240Z in town.

I have done all 50 states and many of the territories too of America a half dozen years back, now moved on to fill in the rest of the world. I'm all for the road trip, the nice Datsun too. Where most Americans won't stary too far from home, some will explore America and all it's very good high quality roads. Now traveling the world, where very few would dare, I do run into many doing the same

Man, I just took a trip to So Cal at the end of April on 101. There must have been a car show for these old Datsuns. I saw quite a few on the road on trailers and all 4. On my way back, I had an unpainted Datsun 1600 keeping up on 101 with my E60 528i at 80 mph. The suspension was upgraded because it did not have a bounce or jump. It just looked like a little track car. I came back home and put Bilstein B8s on my Z3 to do the So Cal trip again in 2 months. Driving top less in an old working car, looks like a lot of fun. I hope I run into that car again in the future. My Z3 is the closest I will ever get to owning a Datsun 1600. They're beautiful fun cars.

My brother had a 67 1600. Silver with a black Datsun racing stripe above the rocker panels. For a 16 year old kid, It was a blast to drive. I liked the styling on the front end with that hood scoop. Those su carburetors were a pain to sync. I remember picking my brother up from work one afternoon and saying I felt a vibration in it. He climbed in and poped the clutch. The car leaped about 10 feet before we heard a loud bang. Looking backwards we saw the dented driveshaft laying in the street. That was a long walk home:) Unfortunately it was a rusted dream the last time I saw it 5 years ago. My nephew was supposed to get rid of it after my brother passed. I don't know if he did. It's a shame. I would have loved to rescue it.

I went straight on web looking for one of these. Never seen one before, in UK so super rare here. This one's been lowered(new suspension?) as well as 5 spd box. 96hp is pretty decent for a 1967 engine.

I had two 1969 Datsun roadsters, i loved the sound of the multi-bladed nylon radiator fan. The car sounded like a Turbine, with that short stroke high revving engine, you could hear it coming a block away. With a full X-member box frame, it was heavy, hard suspension and rode like a truck, bumps really hurt. Obviously a Japanese attempt at a lousy British roadster. Hot running with the undersized water pump, high compression; spewing radiators, bursting hoses and blowing head gaskets were commonplace. Rugged, but not really reliable. Parts from Datsun were discontinued and unavailable. (The 2000 roadster was even worse, for it's finickiness.) The 240z was the redemption of Datsun, what a wonderful machine compared to anything else at the time.

This car was produced at a time when the Japanese were copying British roadsters. Front and rear lights and fins similar to those on the MGB. Dashboard similar to the Sunbeam Alpine. Basically, a reliable British sports car. As I recall, the next model up, the 2000 was insanely fast with the larger engine (OHC) and an extra gear. Ironically, what killed it was the 240Z. What a great story and what a great car!

Datsun roadsters are dead sexy!
@XoVoX
@XoVoX 10 лет назад
Riles07 oh, no doubt there. There is not much disagreement that Japanese car companies at the time stole British designs and implemented them into their own cars. Still, you cant deny that its a good looking car and far more reliable. Between this and the 240Z, Datsun put a huge hurting on the british sports car companies.

krodista Don't forget the Toyota 2000GT which took it's styling ques from the E-Type. I think it looks better than the E-Type though. Heresy I know...
@XoVoX
@XoVoX 10 лет назад
Riles07 I wouldnt say that the E-Type is an unattractive car. I think its a good looking car, but the 2000GT is also another beautiful car. However, the 2000GT, nor any Toyota had much bearing on the market compared to Datsun at the time. How times have changed...
@WarrenZevonFan
@WarrenZevonFan 10 лет назад
True. At least here in America Datsuns had a very strong performance market back in the day. The 510 comes to mind. It was like Datsun's version of BMW's Neue Klasse. A small but fun to drive FR sedan that just has looks that aged much better than it's American counterparts. Nobody really considers a Gremlin, Pinto or a Vega a "classic."
@XoVoX
@XoVoX 10 лет назад
Duck Draper Im not sure I would say nobody. Each of those cars carry a niche part of the market, but still. Their fans are ravenous. Truly though, from the 60s-70s Datsun had the market figured out across the board.
