Grasshopper is coming along nicely. I started working at a truck garage at age 13 cleaning parts and small things. I hated the sound of a Detroit Coming down the lane because I knew it would be an oil leaking mess. I spent hours at a parts washer cleaning & hours scraping gaskets. Now 44 years later I love & miss the sound of an old 2 stroke Detroit.

Sarge is tough, but Sarge is also old and as an older man myself, I can say that Sarge would likely appreciate being inside or at least under a roof. What, no video of the hinge install? That had to come with a degree of drama. A mouse in the crankcase? Now that's crazy! Engine cranks, that's a good sign. Nice, new bumper, thank you for sticking with the original style bumper and not using an aftermarket replacement.

Man Dane, you sure do nice work - and when you can't/don't, you find someone who can. That new bumper is awesome! Sarge's bumper is awesome too - it looks somewhat OEM! One thing I'd change would be to box in the bottom of that new cab hinge bracket, as the driver side one appears to be. I guess if you have the hinge pin pass through a sleeve, and the sleeve is fully welded at both ends/sides, it should be OK - but I still like them to match...🙄

Hi Dane. Love your stuff. Nice job on the bumper, and all the other fab work. One thing you might want to check out before you install the bumper though. You notice on the old bumper it had step holes, and the new one doesn’t ? The step hole performs a dual purpose. When you have the steering wheel hard over, the pitman arm will move forward and will actually protrude out into the step hole ! So check that out or you will mess it the bumper by pushing it forward. Here in Canada we didn’t have that style of K 100 cab. When I say that the Canadian cab had the KW sign not the individual letters spelling out Kenworth. Also the headlight panels might be different. I believe we had the K 523 cabover before the K 100. The 523 had a chrome fold down panel to access the rad filler neck. Also the electrical was accessible through a hinged corner panel on the drivers side corner panel. You could stand on the ground and open the panel to work on the wiring. Not one of Kenworths best innovations. Thinking if you go with that grearshift head, unless the lever lifts out like a bar as in the K 523, it’s not likely the assembly will pass through the hole in the cab floor when you Jack up the cab. Curios, was this truck assembled at the Kansas City plant ? If so maybe the serial number starts with the letter J. In the early days KW used a letter followed by 6 numbers for the VIN. My first K 100 was assembled in Montreal in 76. M985211, My 82 was M810301. After many years and federal regs required a 17 character Vin KW reused the old numbers and my 82 came up as a Mexican built cab over garbage truck chassis. Good thing I had both of my final build sheet books. Listed every component used to build the truck, also some dealers had the build book on microfiche. Those were the days my friend. I have a story about being denied a fuel permit by the state of Vermont because I couldn’t convince then I only had a 7 character vin. More to the story another time.
@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE
@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE 8 месяцев назад
Wow! Thanks for all the info. I was trying to figure out why the square holes and decided it was for air circulation but didn’t really seem like it was needed with a skinny bumper. I also figured it was obviously a weak spot on the steel one let alone the aluminum so opted to leave them out. I will definitely check the clearance. Thank you!

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 That hinge assembly is quite beefy & cool! That takes some fabricating skills! Whew! You might take that 12 volt starter apart, clean & lube it & it might work just fine. There was quite a big nest around the flywheel. Hey, I think you said it was sitting outside. That will cause some issues. I love the rounding of the bumper edges…makes it look so cool! You might even find some more coins in the truck, so keep your eyes open. I would love to be there when you fire that beast up for the 1st time! Joel & I both! Hmmm! Grasshopper, he is coming right along! Good stuff! 🥰😎✌️

If nothing else, pulling the pan off of that 8v71 to get the expired rodent and whatever muck was in there out was well worth it! Curious…what’s the HP rating on it? Many automatically assumes every 8v71NA to be a 318, which simply isn’t true…this being a ‘66, could it possibly be a 290? Are there any future plans for adding engine brakes?
