Great stuff as usual! Plus educational. As far as the clutch stuff... I totally agree. I put over 900,000 miles on a 15 speed over in a 1994 Peterbilt 379. Never replaced the clutch or had any transmission problems, always started out in LOW gear & used the clutch.

I can’t agree with the clutching every gear I do agree with starting out in a low gear, whatever gear you can idle out in. Drove 54 years and never had a trans or clutch wear out

Worked at Taber's Truck Sales in East Missoula,Montana from July 1977 to July,1980. Got to live it many hours and days and worked on alot of trucks and trailers. Dane,this show sure takes me back and has that old school spirit. Taber Town pretty well was the whole town and it was all trucks. Taber's was primarily a Cummins shop ,but plenty of Detroits and Cats. Learned plenty!

I was taught by a bunch of drivers who drove duplexes and Brockways and Reos . One guy had a Emeryville. This was in the early 80's. My mentorship at a small family owned trucking company. They taught me to float the gears ,along with many other things. I go by instinct. Sometimes I double clutch and sometimes I don't

Hi Dane. Grasshopper is looking great! Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the transmission tutorial by Mr. Wizard. (Actually I enjoyed it so much I watched it twice.) Very educational. In 48 years I always used the clutch the first 40 knowing if I missed a gear I wouldn’t hurt anything too bad. The last 8 years I went to floating the gears because I was more comfortable and the big company I drove for at several times reprimanded me for cleaning my truck so I just went to do what was more comfortable for me. Anyway thanks to you and Mr. Wizard for a great video.

Mr Wizard is a smart old time gear guy and verified why I use my clutch. Obviously also feeling the syncronizer and felt grooves and saw it was still usable. Good gomments for the schooling. And your piece by piece restoration of small panels sure is countering the rumors of 10K, and up, paint jobs . Good thoughts about the options when installing the decals . Great stuff ! Regarding pre selecting the splitter in changing ranges , also wears the syncronizer, I'm sure .

@rickymcallister1255
@rickymcallister1255 3 месяца назад
You can preselct high or low range. It wont shift until you are in the neutral gate. Im jot sure ypu can see it, but if you look close inside the transmission behind the slave valve there is a plunger sticking out. It mates with a plunger in the shift cover (where the forks are). If the shifter is in gear the plunger in the cover pushes the plunger in the case into the piston in the slave valve. ( iston is the part 1/4 on one end 1/2 on the other) There is a groove in the piston the pluger goes into. It prevents the range shifting high or low. When you go into neutral springs return the plungers and that allows the piston to move and complete the shift

O-H-I-O Porters🇺🇸 Howdy there! GH is coming along nicely! I bet you’re glad that you took the back of that tranny off! Did you flush it out or are you gonna take it all the way out? I like seeing all those gears. Takes me back when my brother would work with him taking transmissions & rears apart. What an experience! It’s cleaner on this end though! Hahaha! He also taught me to clutch when shifting, no matter what! I still do that. It’s good to hear from a professional what happens through the process of shifting & what happens when you don’t clutch! Such good stuff! 🥰🥰✌️

@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE 🇺🇸 Good morning my friend. I believe I told you before. This KW, aka GH, quite reminds me of the 1969 KW that my dad had when I was a kid. I was so infatuated with that truck it seems. I could climb up in it at 5 yrs old & take a nap in the bunk. They found me there a few times. Hahaha! My brother had it out on a trip, was coming back thru KY, and it caught fire & burned to the rails. I heard my dad on the phone & I was crying cause I thought my brother was in it. I sure was happy when I found out he was OK. It was sad to see the frame rails at the garage when it was hauled in. Well, that’s my old KW story. Sad but true. Have a double portion today & be safe! Blessings. 🤩🤩✌️

that was excellent 40 mins explaining about how a gearbox works and the do and don'ts about not using the clutch rather than the usually 10 - 15 mins of showing what I have done rather than showing us how you have or actual doing it infront of the camera and the rest of the time chatting about complete and utter rubbish

So for a technical question can that 13 speed be converted by leaving the main box on the truck..And just change the rear tail.stock..? Grasshopper coming along nicely...cant wait to see how you cut the frame for the spliced new rears...
@rickymcallister1255
@rickymcallister1255 3 месяца назад
The only modification with the main box in the truck, would be to a 9 speed. Of course that would require a longer dtive shaft. You would also lose the overdrive. It would be like 12th in the 13 speed

Absolutely nothing wrong with not using the clutch IF you have the correct finesse. You have to have just the right timing between getting out of the fuel and moving the stick so your not dragging the clutches. I'd guess most do but some do not. I driven millions of miles without the clutch with no damage.
