I'm following along with my "new" mercury 110 and this is perfect. I love that you show how to remove parts without special tools that cost a fortune. Tip master. Also, I was able to replicate your homemade puller using the same bolt setup you have with an existing 4 slot puller I just bought. Good for flywheel and this application. You're the man!

Thanks for the info Michael! I'm the second owner of a 1962 Merc 400, that has been used in saltwater extensively. Even though I use Salt Away, and wash it down thoroughly, one of the parts in the gear housing have been eaten away. I'm tearing down the lower unit to figure out why my water pump is not working properly. It turned out to be the water pump cartridge assembly that was leaking between the cartridge and the stainless cartridge insert. The aluminum housing was eaten away about 1/16 of an inch, so It wouldn't make a nice seal. The whole assembly was frozen in, and thought I might need to drill it out. Fortunately, after about a week of soaking/heating and pounding down on the top of the gear case, with the shaft in a vise, It finally broke free. More amazing was that I found an old-new stock complete cartridge assembly. Was trying to figure out what type of puller I needed to remove the forward gear, and found your video. After about a minute using map gas, it popped out so quickly that I wasn't able to catch it with my hand underneath. Luckily I had a blanket on the floor. My next step is to remove the roller bearings from the gears. Hopefully you have a video on separating the gear from the housings. Thanks again for your help. David

The trick with heating the case and the bearing falls right out, works great. The shifting paw has a flat side with two lobs. The case has a short wall (or a small shelf) the flat side of the paw faces the short wall. Watch when you take it apart. I was switching cases, 9.8(1970) to 7.5(1979). They are reversed, so you need to change the paw. Flipping it over looks like it would work, but it is tapered on the inside of the paw and will not seat on the shaft in the same position. Luckly I had the paw from both cases. So I just changed out the paw to match the new case. I got my bearings from a local bearing supply shop and saved money and time. To remove the retaining nut behind the prop, I used a black pipe nipple. I cut the sides with a saws-all leaving two tits to fit the slot in the nut. Then used a pipe wrench to turn it. worked great and was quick and easy to make. Good Luck All and be safe on the water.

MISS INFORMATION ON MY LAST ENTRY: The flat side of the PAW is not near the short wall (or small shelf). The flat side of the Paw is opposite the short wall. Sorry for the confusion. I also ran into a problem with the changing the 6 point prop shaft to the newer 8 point(prop shaft is smaller) the spline (for the shifter gear on the prop shaft) are shorter in length. So measure these if you are interchanging the two shafts. (Read previous post for motor and years)

Michael, you are very easy to watch, and I have gained a lot from you. My question is, on the port side of the gear housing (1967 9.8 mercury) is a hole. When I changed gear oil and tested it, some oil weeped from the hole. Is this normal? Thank you God bless the USA.

@RMDCreations Thank You! Love your videos and I refer to them on a regular basis. Live in NW Wisconsin and for the last several years have been working 50's-60's and 70's OMC Outboards and 1962-1970 Mercury 4hp thru mostly 9.8 hp Merc 110's.

Cause when took apart it was going to the left min 14:11 . I was paying attention .Cause I’ve learned a bunch from watching ya videos .. Awesome droning of the Banana👍👍👍👍. As always Sir thanks for the ride along ..

Hi Mike. Really informative video. Sure would be interested to know how much the parts cost for the rebuild. I have a ‘94 9.9 Mercury 2 stroke that runs great but suddenly decided that it would not select forward, neutral or reverse. With shop costs at $180/hour plus tax I am debating wherther to attempt the fix myself or get a new, 20hp motor with a five year warranty. (Those would be Canadian dollars as I’m in Vancouver)
@Michaelsbackyardmarina

$300 plus in parts

What I've run into with these is the driveshaft and shift rod will rust and be pitted due to being made from carbon steel. I've had to acid wash and skim coat with JB weld before. I much prefer Evinrude and Johnson. Oh, and by the way, that's a 9.8 isn't it, not a 9.9?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina

You are probably right on the 9.8 vs 9.9 Thanks for watching

I have 66 or 67 merc 4hp with a completely seized up lower unit. This video will be really useful once I can get the locknut off of the propeller shaft. With the blade blocked the whole shaft turns inside the propeller when I wrench on the nut. I can turn it both directions. Any idea as to how to get that prop off? Thanks
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
@Michaelsbackyardmarina Год назад
If it froze to the shaft, I would try to heat up the prop. If there is rubber in the prop this may not work.
@rictowell
@rictowell Год назад
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina There is rubber on the shaft. That’s what’s turning. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it

Its good to take pitchers of all you are taking a part or do a video for your self so when you go to put it back to tether you will know where everything gos. I looked for that tool $38.99
