Not much repair work in this video. We just remove more and more rusty panels :)

Another great video Elin! You set a timer on my Alexa when I watched this LOL! The wing removal was much like the rear wing removal on my Spitfire. Thankfully for you it was not big booger welds like it was on mine. The brazing was probably a little easier to cut through and the stick welds I had to deal with. Keep up the great work. You are sailing past me on this project. Cheers!

Today’s video was phenomenal!! Because of rust and poor body repair I have to perform that very same procedure!! Thank you 🙏!!

Elin, thank you for voicing what you do NOT know as you proceed; it really helps us learn the 'thought process' of the repairs! A question not asked is a question not answered. You explain not only the 'how' of a repair step but also the 'why' the step is taken. Thank you for sharing what questions that you ask yourself.

Very interesting video. I do believe that the wing that you removed was not the original. It may have been replaced by a body shop years ago. The ‘69 GT6+ that I have posted on your Facebook page, was in similar condition after it was a daily driver here in Newfoundland until 1981. Luckily the rear fenders and the bonnet were still in good shape along with the doors. The floor was rusted out as were the two sills. The frame was in very poor shape and I decided to get a replacement frame for it. I was very lucky to find an excellent frame in Montreal, my hometown, had it shipped to Newfoundland by CNR. It surprises me that the frame on the ‘66 looks solid. The ‘66 overall seems to be in a lot worse shape than mine was. The frames are fairly robust but looking at the state of the ‘66 you have to wonder how the frame has survived. When you started putting the sill back on I considered sending you two end caps that I have spare. I couldn’t find an address for you. In the end you whipped up two end caps a lot faster than mailing the two would have taken to get to you. Several years ago, actually over ten years now, I installed a rear wing on a 1975 Spitfire. The original fender had major accident damage. I didn’t have to worry about rust underneath so the replacement went fairly easily. I can’t really remember how long it took me to do the job but it didn’t seem to be that long a time. The choice you made for the fender was the correct one although I think I would have bought the replacement inner fender. They are sold in two pieces as you know. Having the right tools is so important. I don’t have a stretcher or a shrinker and at my age now, 73, not likely to buy them. I am winding down my projects. Keep up the great work.

I agree with other comments. The wing (fender) is unlikely to have been braised at the factory and is probably a replacement after accident damage and could account for your alignment issues with the bonnet (hood). I am sure the end result will be somewhat better!!!!

She is coming apart in true Rusty Beauties fashion! Nice work. I am looking forward to seeing how the new parts fit together.

I learned from Peter Anderson that "wings" or "fenders" are called "guards" in Australia. Who knew ????

Elin I'm a big fan, started watching the program when you started your 66 Spitfire. I'm restoring my 68 Spitfire and ran into a similar problem with my outer rocker panel. Wen I installed it, the back part of the front of the rocker was low, like the front of yours. I found the rocker was twisted slightly and when I straightened it the the front part came into alignment. I'm having the same issue with getting the bonnet back like you are so I hope you can solve it.

Whenever I look at a GT6, I think of two things: 1. Mr Parfitt with the big port wine stain who was an art teacher at my school in Wiltshire. He drove one, and I used to park my BSA Bantam next to it. 2. Riding illegally in the back of my brother's Honda S800 in 1977 from the bottom of Highgate Hill (must have travelled to Archway on the tube from Paddington) to Crouch End, at which point I could neither get out nor stand up as my legs had no blood in them. My girlfriend (and still my wife today) was in the passenger seat. 3. Maybe there are S800s to be restored in Canada? 4. Elin, maybe you would like a road trip one day to NS? I'm moving house right now, but if we ever get a covid-free summer, I can give you a proper 1991 Miata experience... 5. By the way, ignore the idiots. Let them do their restorations their way.

Likewise, if a trip to NS is going to happen, let us know. At least one member of the British Automobile Touring Association of Nova Scotia (me) would be glad to hang out. I have taken on tasks with my 74 TR6 that I would not have dreamed of without your videos.

@@paulfanning7059 It's been 37 years since I sold my TR7 (sorry, it was a Seven, and that shouldn't count for anything!) But the NA Miata is evrything a British sports car should have been.

another great Video Elin. would you consider sharing your welding set up and settings with us novices when you next do some welding. matching the weld wire speed and power settings when you are joining new and old panels. just a thought.
@garymallard4699
@garymallard4699 2 года назад
You have to adjust your setup to work...one setting isn't going to work on every machine....even if your machine is the same it can not be correct...welding is experience and practice which will tell you what to do....a general starting point is fine..but each person welds slightly different ..you'll learn where to start...look at general settings on your machine/manual etc...or online for starting settings..you soon can know what to adjust...

Elin, do you think the front has had a small crash on the passenger side?, on the video I saw the rust on the inner bracket by the bonnet hinges, the rust on the bracket and wing would be consistent with being repaired, does the drivers side bonnet line up when the bonnet is pushed back to correct position?, could the front end have been pull forward too much?, the rocker looks like it needs to go up and back, has the panel above the front of the rocker been replaced, awesome video as usual, best regards
