Why is it so relaxing to listen to these old ballgames?

Red Rush what a great announcer i remember when he broadcast the 1963 NCCA national championship game, when Loyola Ramblers won it all

Red was like the forerunner to Harry Caray arriving 4 years later. Bob Elson was about as exciting as a dead cow!

Thanks for posting. Great memories from one of baseball's greatest seasons. I don't know if there was another season where four teams went into that last weekend with a chance to win the pennant.

The White Sox were hanging on by a thread, in 4th place, before their game on Friday, September 29. They were in free fall - and eventually lost each of their last six games. There were eliminated when they lost, 1-0, to the Senators. In 1964, in the NL, four teams (STL, CIN, PHI and SF) were still in contention with two games left.

@@deepdrag8131 The Phillies had that '64 NL pennant in their grasp, but "The Phold" dragged them down the standings and the Cardinals swooped in and snatched the flag out of the air, and proceeded to slam shut the Yankee dynasty with a 7 game defeat in the WS.

Walter was one of the most hustling ballplayers ever. He was an exciting player to watch.

This was one of my favorite seasons ever when I was young. The Angels were actually still in the race well into August, so it was a 5-team pennant race that year. This was the farthest into a season since 1906 that the White Sox and Cubs were both in first place, before the Cardinals went on a big winning streak to zoom past the Cubs. This Chisox team set the modern day record for lowest team ERA. Their .225 team average that year basically meant they had one fewer hit per game than an average team had. The pitching staff gave up just a .219 batting average to opponents with a slash line of 219/287/306. John shut out the Red Sox the next day, and Detroit beat Minnesota to leave the four contenders within a game and a half of each other.

Angels put the last two nails in the Tigers' coffin. Sunday DH at Tiger Stadium and " California" as it went by then beat us in both. That was it. No pennant. My Dad took my brother and me.

As good as he was on this occasion, Horlen outdid himself a week later. He no-hit the Tigers on September 10th in Chicago.

I just wish Bob Elson could have lived to see the 2005 White Sox win it all. Who would have guessed Hawk Harrelson would be a long time announcer for the White Sox.
@steveprestegard5151

Biggest homer ever, which is ironic because Harrelson never played for the White Sox.

Why did you remove the 1960s White Sox vs Yankees games from Comiskey Park?

My God the White Sox were the modern day Hitless Wonders these guys could not hit their own weight. My father said it was like watching paint dry and if they did win the pennant the Cards might have beat them in 5 maybe 6 games. Thank God for the pitching and defense

@@davanmani556 It basically reduced hitting by one hit per game, but it also made small ball essential. The White Sox of the 1963-1967 era were more exciting than and more entertaining than any team today. They stole bases, used the hit and run, hit behind runners, used the squeeze play, and then employed starting pitchers that gave up a lot of ground balls. Games were finished in less than 2 1/2 hours, sometimes in less than 2 hours.

@@sabertoothbaseball3432 The ChiSox arguably had a better club than Minnesota in 1965 and would have made a wonderful World Series against the Dodgers.

Harry Caray must have been jarring after Bob Elson.

Caray was great while he broadcast the Sox ; the alcohol caught up with him after. But yes after "The Commander" Caray was certainly a big change. ( Wasn't there somebody in between their reigns ?) Actually, I read somewhere that Allyn ? wanted someone with more pep. Like what we hear, mainly in football , that so and so is " too old and too White" on air, just chilling, Germany 1934. Well any how they got Caray and I don't know that he brought any " pep" to the proceedings but he brought "pop", the "pop" of a cork or bottle cap. That wonderful 1977 season w/ him and Piersall, and "Mary" on occasion, was the craziest act in sports radio. Loved it. Back to this broadcast, Elson was always excellent and what a personable , and eloquent, broadcaster Red Rush was !!! What became of him , I wonder. Thanks for broadcasting this again! An exciting season for many teams and their fans and wow did the White Sox have a nice starting rotation.

Bob Elson, perhaps one of the most boring & lifeless announcers ever for the Whitesox. He would put you to sleep. Red Rush, was very exciting. He was always enthusiastic and positive. Red was the forerunner to Harry Caray.
