This video shows the disassembly procedure for an 8.2" 10 bolt rear axle. This procedure is the same for both 10 and 12 bolt Chevrolet rear axle assemblies. I am rebuilding this axle so that I can replace the factory 3.08:1 open differential unit with a 3.55:1 posi-traction differential unit. The things not shown on this video include the removal of pinion bearing races and the axle seals and bearings. The pinion races were removed with the assistance of an extra long brass drift and a dead blow hammer. The seals were removed with a seal puller. The entire diassembly process took about 1 hr. The axle will now be throughly cleaned and the housing will be checked for cracks and other abnormalities prior to painting and reassembly. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!

I truly appreciate you taking the time to put a video together for this process, but this was pure frustrating to watch.

I didn't see if you marked the carrier bearing caps. You should always mark them so you don't mix them up or put em on upside down.

Very painful to watch. I suggest next time you do a How To, you have your tools ready to go and your compressor pumped up. With that said, I am glad I watched as I did not know to pull the carrier out.

16:31 "So now we are gonna take the main bearing caps off" ......... The fuck you are ......your gonna push those axles in and remove the c clip and slide them out then you can remove those caps. Also the spider gears tend to fall out when the pin is gone and you rotate the assembly. And the whole time you were looking for the pinion nut socket I was screaming "an inch and an 8th" at my screen. Oh and always keep your caps oriented and sorted since you will reuse those. Not saying your doing anything wrong just a little backwards. But since your not gonna be putting that 3.08:1 gears back in how about you send em to me :) That a pretty modest ratio for a street car. The 3.55:1 your putting in there isn't too bad a choice you'd probably like 3.73 a bit better but it isn't like they have a "try and buy" option so you usually get stuck with what you research. These rears aren't that great and I got to watch one fail but of course he was putting something like 500 HP and 637ft lbs of torque to it and that was enough after 14 years to finally kill it. An 8.5 is a bit more stout and can take more abuse but the infamous Ford 9 inch still has it beat. But sticking with a direct swap the 8.5 would be a great option. I say all that with a s10 with the 7.5 in it lmfao what a pile of shit will be doing the Ford 8.8 swap since it is an almost direct fit just holds the wheels out a bit more. Again not too bad of a video.

I think those will fit the 68-71 Nova also. I think Chevy started using the 8.5 in 72. Those would probably bolt right up to a car that originally had a 8.5in too.
